What started it was the recent popularity of Helldivers 2, which was heavily inspired by Starship Troopers.

No, it just compounded it and added recency bias. This is going on since the release of the movie. Some people just don't understand satire. Same as some people don't understand sarcasm.

The supposed satire of the movie is about as vapid as it gets. The director attempted to use aesthetics to make his points, ignoring the actual story or what's said within.
Good example; for all his statements on the supposed propaganda of the federation, it never lies. Nothing stated isn't true. And on the contrary, we get live footage of the reality, the deaths, the costs, of War.

Maybe I missed this debate, the debate I saw raging was “who are the ‘good guys’ in the film?”, with the humans portrayed as war mongering fascists, and the bugs as the unfortunate victims of human expansionist transgressions into bug planets.
However as others have noted in these comments the “fascism” of the terrans in Starship Troopers doesnt seem to extend beyond their choice of clothes as the director decided that would be enough and little to no actual fascism is ever deplicted.
The human expansionism is explained in the film as religious extremists that were warned ahead of time “do not go to that planet.” One side of the debate will claim this is misinformation and that the colonists were sent by the Terran government to prompt an aggressive bug response but there is nothing in the film to support this argument.
If anything the movie is less a satire on fascism and more a cautionary tale of religious extremism setting off an interstellar war with their stubbornness.

The problem with the satire argument is that on every single turn the movie justifies the federation. At no point do they make actions that are wrong. The most you could possibly argue is that their tactics are relatively simplistic but even there they quickly change that tact post Klendathu.
Veerhoeven was ultimately at odds with the writers of the movie.
He did what he could with the visuals to make this particular political narrative of his go through. But the writing does not substantiate it.
Both his supposed critiques of fascism as well as militarism fall short, When the movie fails to display either.
What we get instead is a relatively mundane standing military doing normal everyday standing military things fighting a existential threat to humanity. Something decidedly heroic regardless of Veerhoeven's attempt to portray it as some act of foolish propaganda fueled bravado.
And in case the idea of a false flag comes up, No the movie was rather explicit about this. The bugs did indeed launch the meteor. We literally see the meteor hit the ship our female lead is on, on its way to Earth, explicitly said to have come from the bug territory.
The false like theory ironically enough comes heavily from the media literacy crowd, Demonstrating quite clearly to all to see how fake they are.
The bugs are not stupid or primitive. They in fact have FTL capabilities, and the intelligence to master the trajectories required to use their means to colonize other worlds.
Klendathu is their home planet. Not their only planet.
Dantana, where the Mormons settle, is not their home planet. Nor is the planet we see the Brain Bug captured on.
It is an objective statement of fact that the bugs attacked first. It is also the case that they have the means to wipe out humanity. They destroyed Zegema Beach. It's gone. Past tense. Contrary to the Twitter narrative, the war is an existential one.

Your point about the "national socialist party" of Germany is one that seems poignant, until you think about it for 3 seconds.
A group labeling themselves something doesn't make it an accurate description.
Look at all the countries named things like "the People's Republic of Freedom and Prosperity" for easy examples of this.

The debate is over whether Starship Troopers is a satire of fascism or whether Starship Troopers was just a fun action movie against bugs that people should stop calling a satire of fascism. It's about people who understood it is satirizing fascism and the people who thought it was cool and love its society, wants to cosplay as a light infantryman irl, and ergo reacts badly when people call it anything near fascism.

@@Nixonitus He's a great film maker, but I feel the "it's a satire" was an excuse to explain how the movie wasn't liked at the time, it was considered cheesy and I believe was called Melrose Place in Space or 90210 in space etc. "What the movie is stupid and poorly acted? Nah nah see it's it's a satire! Yeah!" Please. He slapped lazy blatant visuals of historical fascists with non of their behaviors or ideologies. The humans react and act realistically and logically. With the knowledge they had at the time. The film ends with them not winning, just finally proving these bugs have a higher caste that aren't dumb and they can maybe, MAYBE make progress it isn't a guarantee. The biggest issue is these aliens simply view life, others and their own so differently from humans. Individual people are valued, humans arent treated like fodder they simply had high numbers. When they were clearly in over their heads they retreated as best as they could and regrouped to find a better plan. They weren't forced to go wave after wave until they made progress against the bugs. Having a ton of soldiers in the fray isn't the same as being a victim of a war machine meat grinder because the higher-ups see you as canon fodder. The opposite is true, the bugs treat their soldiers as we treat bullets and bombs. If it takes 10,000 bugs to kill 60 humans then they'll do it. Every time. The movie is about valuing people vs valuing pure war progression. And the humans were the ones valuing their lives, while the bugs were pure war mode, their underlings are fodder, they want nothing but progress in expansion.
