I suspect the reason that Johnny's cover have such power is that he only covered songs that touched him and he then put that emotion back into his interpretation.
@@synthtoaster Pretty much everything on the 'American' albums is a cover, or a pre-existing "traditional" or "gospel" song. He re-does a few of his own as well.
Johnny was deeply devout. his cynicism was more of how man could forget the gift of Christ, than of Christ himself. he championed the downtrodden rather than railing at others. no singer has had nearly the influence on my life as he has had. and im a better man because of it.
@@mikeholton9876 Yes but the writer of the song, Martin Gore, is not religious at all, and it's a through-line in his music that he wants to believe or at least understand belief, but he finds everything, including good faith attempts at belief, seems to come up short somehow. Specifically in Personal Jesus he's attacking the idea that one can find spirituality in another human even through deep love. In the original performance the verses are performed with a level of what can only be described as "sleeze" to them implying that anyone who wants to be or is willing to "be your personal Jesus" is someone you should be extremely wary of. He's also said in interviews that putting that expectation on a person means that you are denying their humanity for your own needs and is inherently selfish. He's been on this journey for his entire music career and it's a theme he comes back to often. He's not a cynical atheist hiding behind "searching" he is someone who has and continues to attempt to authentically determine what represents divinity to him but is continually disillusioned by failure. The closest he says he believes he's come to finding that divinity is in people, not a person, but people in general. He's mentioned seeing normal everyday people run toward danger just to help others, along with having met people all over the world and despite not sharing a culture and barely sharing understanding because they don't speak the same language there's always commonality that can be found. However he also notes (as a mixed race individual himself) that despite those sparks of divinity in our shared humanity we are easily divided and difficult to unite and the fact that we have the capacity to hate over trivialities like skin color (Martin Gore is mixed race, and when he said this he was discussing Apartheid South Africa) are the flaws that demonstrate that divinity is not in it's entirety found in our shared humanity. So yes, some of his songs can sound deeply cynical, but that's not an accurate description, he's deeply disillusioned, but that doesn't stop him from trying.
@@mikeholton9876 I think he was referring to the cynicism of the original artist, Depeche Mode. They did it cynically. Johnny sung it literally (with belief).

To Joao Sousa: I loved Johnny Cash since a child. I never heard this old song before. I know about J. Cash, his hard life, jail, addictions, etc. But we're all sinners, & without sounding "holier than thou," he also started having true faith in Jesus Christ. All of us experience many hard times, BAD stuff but also challenges, laughter, hard work. I grew up poor & had to move a lot. Came from somewhat big family (4 siblings) but made things work out somehow. We were friends with all our neighbors--Jewish, African-American, Italian, Irish, Caucasian & all. If you knew what I've been thru (BORING, huh? :) you wouldn't believe it. I "discovered" Jesus at about 21 yrs. old. If you feel his song "Personal Jesus" is about prostitutes, try closely listening to the lyrics. My life now is horrid but blesse! Thanks for replying & your thoughts. Ya quisieran mierdas como jay z o kaynie west, bad bunny o toda esa bola de mierdas poder cantar así y de jóvenes porque Cash de viejo les ponía una verguiza hasta con los ojos cerrados.

Fantastic totally.
Absolutely Outstanding. This mans' talent has no end.
Facts!
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out reach out
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
andrea fantini you need to dig a bit deeper into why cash was so we'll respected in the music community. Don't hate.. understand his importance to the average person
just accept
MAY JESUS BLESS YOU ALL
🤫
Thanks
I can’t believe I have missed that’. OMG a thank you Johnny Cash …….love it
In the words of Johnny Cash himself, "You just can't beat Jesus Christ". He is the way, the truth and the life. NO ONE goes to the Father but through Him.
Amen. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
wishing don't make it so
Y'know, you don't need to be the only way to be a good way. =/ Maybe focus on the love and not the supremacy over all other ways.
I have allways been a johnny Cash fan but this song must be played at my funeral Johnny
Próprio Jesus
Seu próprio jesus particular
Alguém para escutar suas preces
Alguém que se importe
Seu próprio jesus particular
Alguém para escutar suas preces
Alguém que esteja lá
Um sentimento estranho
E você está completamente sozinho
Carne e osso
No telefone
Aumente a captação
Eu lhe tornarei um crente
Pegue o segundo melhor
Me coloque em teste
As coisas em seu peito
Você precisa confessar
Eu o livrarei
Você sabe, eu sou um salvador
Alcance e atinja a fé
Alcance e atinja a fé
Seu próprio jesus particular
Alguém para ouvir suas preces
Alguém que se importe
Seu próprio jesus particular
Alguém para ouvir suas preces
Alguém para cuidar
Um sentimento estranho
E você está completamente sozinho
Carne e osso
No telefone
Aumente a captação
Eu lhe tornarei um crente
Eu o livrarei
Você sabe, eu sou um salvador
Alcance e atinja a fé
Alcance e atinja a fé
Alcance e atinja a fé
Alcance e atinja a fé
Diego 9, you are a handsome man!
Who would think to take a DM song, bring on a RHCP guitarist, and sing the hell out of the song. Genius!!! Nicely done Johnny and Rick.
I love Johnny! This cover of Depeche Mode is killer!
Everything Cash sings becomes gold.
I love old country and Cash is amazing. He also does Heart of Gold by Neil Young.

This song plays in my mind whenever I go to church.
I didn't even know that a Johnny Cash cover existed(?)
I'm crying!
Same here I only found out by listening on the net to Dave Gahan new music(from one of the replies)
Happy for your discovery of this powerful confession by Johnny
You were better off lol, these people were deceivers.
this cover is one of the best songs Johnny ever made! Thanks for that !!!
He is the greatest at turning modern music into the two archetypes. He does both Country and Western
Johnny cash could take any song from any genre and make it his own✌️
This cover is out of sight. Blew my mind...
Once again, he can cover any song, and he owns it *****
To Joao Sousa: I loved Johnny Cash since a child. I care for all folks, including you. Take care.
Who could have imagined,Johnny Cash would sing the song of Depeche Mode ! And this is so great ! Today Sep. 12 is Johnny's death day. R.I.P.
He sings A song by Depeche Mode. Still waiting for that Enjoy The Silence cover...
@yooo spaghettioooFortunately we can listen Johnny Cash singing on recordings. We can feel his sincere heart and soul.
Wow!! I love it!! That bluesy piano in the background sounds super 🆒️ 👌!!
Que coisa mais maravilhosa.
I could listen to this cover all day !!
Very good cover. The best one of this song.
Oh Jonny wherever you are, perfect, perfect, perfect. Greetings from Poland.
I love these songs.
Still listening in June of 2024. Reach out and touch faith...Reach out and touch faith...
A mix of Depeche Mode and Johnny Cash performing this song would be EPIC!❤
~APRIL LIPKE
Currently hearing this at a restaurant. I might have heard it before with him but I forgot if so. Regardless, he did so many great recordings.
This makes me feel so many things. Love this.
que gran talento este hombre. con un registro de voz muy limitado pero con tanta música y sentimiento encima que deja pensando....
awebo men
Fantastic totally.
I'm no country music fan, but ANYTHING Johnny Cash does is gold.
Copy and paste, thtat's sad
This is powerful!
