  • Using crutches on stairs or steps can be very scary. So here are a few tips to help you get safely up and down the stairs with crutches. See how to walk with crutches here: • How to Use Crutches Co...
You might be using two crutches and non-weight bearing (NWB) on one side, partial weight bearing (PWB) with two crutches, or PWB with one crutch.
The first thing to remember when climbing stairs with crutches is always go up with your good leg, and down with your bad leg. A way to remember is: “The good go to heaven, the bad go to hell.” This applies even if you are non-weight bearing with crutches and hopping up and down the stairs.
The best thing to do is practice going up and down on one step with the crutches until you feel comfortable, and have someone with you if you can when you first try it. When using two crutches, they always go with the bad leg.
When you go down to one crutch, the crutch or cane goes on the opposite side of the bad leg, and all the same rules apply.

I thought that people using crutches were sticks waiting to fall. Until I myself got injured. Now using crutches, they’re pretty solid. Its like having 3 legs

This helped me so much, my school isn't accessible for those with wheelchairs or crutches at all. I just got put on crutches due to a sprain, and i was struggling to even get up two steps. With a little practice and assistance (to make sure I didnt fall of course) it progressively got easier:) Thank you!!

I’ve just broken my ankle in 2 places and dislocated it, my stairs are much deeper than that and I can’t make the jump on one leg, it’s a nightmare going upstairs and also going in/out of the house

My steps are too high. After a zillion other ortho issues, I'm not strong enough to make that jump, even when I'm weight bearing. My husband is in great shape and struggles with the height.
