CRap! I have enough trouble sometimes just goin up steps w/ No crutches!! Goin up is better than down. Great stuff & so helpful for folks to know! Y'all are the best!!
Thanks mate! I'm a writer, and my character broke his leg. I'm just watching videos to understand the proper techniques and this one has humor and also is really informative! I appreciate it!
I fractured my ankle a few weeks before my 42nd birthday. My husband and my dad moved a bed downstairs to our living room for me for a couple of months, but we only had a powder room downstairs, so I still had to get upstairs to get to our shower. I could get up and down the stairs easily enough using the butt scoot method, but it took me a bit before I figured out how to get back onto my feet at the top of the stairs. The railing at the top of the stairs wasn’t all that robust, so I didn’t want to try pulling myself back to my feet with it… I finally figured out how to use about the same method that toddlers employ, using my hands and knees, getting the foot of my the good leg under me, and then still using my hands to help balance as I pushed up to a standing position.
@@fazeelalaher6250 Yes, that was sort of what I discovered on my own (my broken ankle happened in 2003). After the surgery, I wore a boot and compression bandages, rather than using a cast, and I had to be very careful to not put any weight on it for the first 6 weeks or so. This video is almost exactly the method I came up with just by thinking about how toddlers learn how to get up onto their feet: ruclips.net/video/wTn-WiJSbGs/видео.html
@@melinphx1Thank you so much for that link!! I ended up at the ER earlier today after 3 weeks of unbearable ankle/leg/foot pain… turns out I was walking on a broken fibula. They gave me no instructions on how to get upstairs, this method helped save me from being stranded outside after I got to the top of the stairs using the scoot up on my butt method.
After 2 TKRs and 1 Hip replacement, I found the most encountered steps are single ones (curbs, thresholds). For weightbearing, I always remembered my PT's advice: "Down with the bad, up with the good."
Flashbacks to college when I fractured my fibula and was non weight bearing for about 10 weeks. Stairs were my nemesis! It didn't help that the student health center didn't give me more than 5 seconds of instruction to use crutches and none of that stairs. Glad to know the right way to use them should I end up on crutches again.
You forgot the tushie technique, invented by Yours Truly as a teenager. Sit down on the first step on your tushie. Use your good leg and your hands to help you slide up/down the steps. Drag your crutches with you as you progress up/down the stairs.
Sure wish that the PT department that taught me how to use crutches had taught me about the sit position or using the handrail. Going up stairs was scary but looking at all of those stairs that I could fall down if I made a mistake terrified me. Fortunately, I never fell going down. Only going up and basically just caught myself on the stair above me. 13 months in casts and on crutches with this to deal with every day.
I've seen this technique and I've been able to go down, but when it comes to going up, my good leg just won't do it. I can't get it to move. I think my body is convinced I'm going to fall. I find going up curbs really hard unless I can find something to grab onto.
Thanks that’s very helpful. At intro you said you were going to show both options but you never showed how to do it with weight bearing. Would love to see that one too as I am soon graduating to weight berating after 6 weeks of non wb following heel corrective surgery. Thanks again!
I had a tibial tuberosity transfer, and a lateral release... None weight baring and keeping it straight was hard... Stairs always freaked me out, because the year before I had a crappy arthroscope surgery and I fell upstairs twice... I did my best to avoid stairs when I had my major surgery, always made sure I had support into the house (we have no rail). the only time I slipped was 4 days after surgery and put weight on my operated leg... the pain was horrific... Was sent to the GP for more Endone by the surgeon...
If you only have an ankle or foot injury, you could crawl up with both knees...or your good foot and bad foot's knee. Going up backwards on your bum, you can put your bad leg over your good knee-like crossing legs-and then you won't have to worry about reinjuring the leg.
I just stayed upstairs until I could safely walk on my injured leg. It sucked but I was terrified of using crutches on stairs because my arm on the same side was also injured.
I broke my hip and legs. Started to use the crutches to go up the stairs but I only use one to go up and 2 to go down. When I use 1 to go up the stairs i place the other crutch in front of me, leaning against the rail and use the handrail to go up. Then repeat the process until I get to the top.
Thanks. What i am finding tricky is when i get to the top of the stairs and have to get down to my butt without putting weight on the left leg. i can do it, but certainly not graceful.
Just broke my ankle again yesterday. My strength on the non injured leg and shoulder are not well at all. I did the scooting up and down the starirs. It’s murder!
Thank u. I have varicose vain problem n now it is increasing badly. Plz make video for it. How can I stop or slow down it. What things to avoid? I m diabetic n heavy weight.
For about a year, laying on the floor, I elevated my legs on a wall at about a 70° angle for twenty minutes most everyday and it helped flush some of the fluid out the legs. It would help to lose weight. Ideally, 90° angle would be best if you could scoot your rear end up against where the wall and floor meets and straighten out the legs along the wall straight up.
@@michaeljozwiak25 thank u Michael. I do it once in a week but it doesn't help. Now I will try daily n will see the result. I started wearing socks for vericose from last 1 year.
I’m using a walker because crutches scare me… but using the scoot up method. However my arms / shoulders are getting super sore tired because I have hyper mobility. Any suggestions for my shoulders?
My foot is in a boot which is really heavy and throws my balance off. When try to I hop up I feel like I'm going to topple, especially with the crutches behind me. I am also concerned about banging my broken ankle in the boot on the steps if I try sitting and going up backwards. Also have no idea how I would get up again without putting weight on my foot. Any suggestions?

Been there as a 70yo male. Did the up on the behind thing. The problem is standing up when you get to the top.

When I was 23 and 36 years-old, I found that with crutches and going up steps without railings, it was easier to go up a few steps backwards.
Excellent instruction! Thank you

Been walking with Canadian forearm crutches for 50 years. Pull in the crutches on a wet surface better control.
I love the dad joke vibes lol "But just wait nine more seconds," and, "Take it step by step."

What is the best way without crutch ?
I'm flying in a few weeks with crutches. I may have to go up a stairs to the plane. Ugh!
Using crutches makes my wrists and hands hurt so I just slide down one step at a time on my behind.
Hello Bob. My husband is 6'5 with very long legs. Do you have any recommendations for crutches that would fit him (non weight bearing, knee surgery)?
They do make standard Crutches for people that tall. They will work well.
What if there is no rail?
Hi
I WANTED TO BE FIRSY
I broke my foot so I want to know ❤
Do not ever go backwards down or up the stairs
