Had knee surgery yesterday and am on crutches, everything is so much harder that was so easy. Putting shoes on is difficult, going to the washroom,it's just crazy everything we take for granted every day.
It is dangerous to stand on one leg to shower because one can slip and fall as soon as the tub gets wet and slippery. It is best to have a non-slip stool in the tub to kneel the fractured foot on for balance or to sit on while washing.
Thanks for the info. I fractured my pelvis in a skiing accident, and sitting for typing is murder. I ordered a bed desk like what you showed. And I just started working with crutches this week. Best wishes to all who need this info.
I injured my ankle and it's been 5 weeks on crutches now. For the shower, I don't advise to stand in the tub. I was standing on one leg before and I found it very slippery and tiring. Instead, I use a non-slip shower mat, with a one-step stool/stepladder on top of the mat to sit on it. To get in the tub, I use a towel on the edge of the tub, I sit on it and then place my injured leg in first, then as I pivot, I bring the good leg in the tub. Then, once both legs are in, I use my hands on the stepladder, and support from my good foot, to pull and transfer my body onto the stool. I shower while sitting most of the time. Occasionally, I get up on one leg but make sure I'm standing on the non-slip mat. I hope this helps someone.
Thank you so much, I just recently messed up my ankle and had to get a full leg cast and living with crutches have made it hard, thank you for your tips.
Hello Megan. I'm a dude, not a 'strong independent woman', but all the same appreciate your video. Broken knee, stuck on crutches, live on my own, no car, and nobody comes past to visit. And i got by, the mental aspect is the hardest part, will i walk again. I landed here to see if the internet had any thoughts on carrying things whilst on crutches, something so simple, made so hard. In the end, i enjoyed your video, very beautiful. If I had a wife, i would help her, even in my current state. That's all i'm saying.
Perhaps what is more curious, is the common phenomenon of beautiful people like this woman, great talent. And then they don't pursue their dreams. (Didn't post every week). Me personally, if i looked spectacular like this i would. Where are you now i wonder. Chase that dream, make those vlogs, go for the moon.
Thanks I’m going to try the backpack thing. Just got a sprained ankle and I’ve been given crutches never used before and I live independently. Thanks for the tips
I am going to have surgery on my foot this week. I’d already come up with the bag and the scooching down the stairs, but this was still so helpful. Thank you!
This is super helpful thank you. I broke my ankle literally yesterday and I’m really going to struggle with not having as much independence since I’m usually caring for my brother but now I’m the person who needs to be cared for 🤷♀️
I literally can't scooch on my but. Bending my knee is hell. So I just use rails and arms to do most the stairs work. I can't wear pants either easily. But the backpack on your chest is a great idea. Thank you for that.
Great video! Currently recovering from shattering my femur & pelvis. The “stair scooch” approach was a game changer. Thank you for taking the time to create.
I cannot agree more! I’ve been struggling the last few days figuring out these crutches (first timer) and using a backpack as a front pouch is such a great idea! I don’t have the same range of motion because I can’t use my knee, but this video was really helpful!
Thank you for this video! I'm currently one week post op from my patellar and ACL surgery, it's pretty rough. It wouldn't be as bad, but about 4 years ago I had surgery on my other knee. Anyway, I hope you're healing great and aren't in too much pain! It seems tough now, but don't give up. You got this!
@@lasya16 I'm doing ok, doctor thinks I re-tore my MLC again, but I'm still on crutches. I was getting off my bed and landed on my knee wrong, so i went to the dr. And he said it felt worse than before. And i also told him the pain was way worse than before. So now I'm on crutches again. But I dont know for how long. And he said this could lead to surgery. 😔
If you can't get your foot wet sit in the bathtub sideways and grab the shower head maybe use a stool to prop your bad foot up and shower while sitting in the tub like that I have supports in my shower so I use those to help me get up just be careful and don't fall!
Another method for a broken foot specifically you can out both knees on the step and crawl up the stairs using your good foot to elevate your body and your bad foot you just use your knee qnd elevate it as you go then at the top of the stairs I hold onto a railing and pull myself up on my good foot I use this method to get up and the scooting method to get down
Hello, I had knee surgery 4 weeks ago and I’m healing pretty good and your video helped me a lot. Please how long did it take you to start using your operated knee again?
Hey. I’m looking at 12 full weeks of total non-weight bearing on crutches and my husband works more than full time. I fractured my tibial plateau. I have had a long crutching period before but that was 10 years ago. I was stronger and younger, had a different house + wheelchair. I’m also living way out in the country now and don’t have Uber or grocery delivery so working on how to manage all sorts of daily things. Fanny pack is a good idea,I use a backpack and grocery bags for carrying or moving everything. I’m a little frightened about getting in/out of the shower and still haven’t figured out how to wash my dogs but I’ll figure it out. Any good tips on butt pain sitting in bed?
Looks like no swollen from your hips to knee. Mine still swollen from left side of my hips to knee that makes hard to move my leg . It’s heavy it’s been over a week since my surgery. I still can’t get down and up to our bed without the help of my wife. I’m waiting the swollen goes away so that I can bent my knee easy and maybe lift. They put 5 anchors and stitch back my labrum plus they shave my socket and ball of my hip joint.
One thing I noticed to be hard is just overall getting food or water. I can't eat anywhere near where I would have to make food and since I'm using both hands on the crutches I can't bring the food or drink anywhere
I used a small wooden dolly that I taped a cutting board onto to fill the hole. I placed my food dishes or any items on top of the board/dolly and as I walked, I would use one crutch to gently push the dolly along the floor to bring these things into the other room. I also wore an apron with big pockets that I can carry a small bottle of water in.
I fell down stairs due to wearing old , worn out athletic shoes with smooth heels, ,& that had loose laces. I was lazy & paid the price with a fracture ankle.
@@Feya297 Don't. Avoid the shower with a step hob like the plague. I decided from day 1, not a chance, the shower will 100% result in death or serious injury. Do not do it. If you have a bathtub, put a towel on the rim of the tub for cushion. Be careful. Slowly crane yourself into the tub. For me at first i had to do it in 2 movements, 1 to get my legs to the tub, then 2 into the tub. Going out is the reverse. I'm glad i already had strong arms. Me i smashed my knee so couldnt twist it so this is how i did it. Avoid the shower please. Use a bowl and a towel and wipe yourself if you have to. If you have a hob, a shower is a guaranteed fall and injure yourself worse. I used the shower twice since my injury now, because i have a little mobility. But i keep crutches on the outside of shower on a bathmat not to slip, and do not move in shower at all. But i will only use the shower once i'm stronger, it's too dangerous
I see slot of people that had surgery or broke/fractured/sprained somewhere on their leg but actually I was doing gymnastics in a field and did a back handspring and landed on an unknown object that I didnt even feel but it cut a part out of the back of my foot and I just got crutches. While my parents were cleaning my foot I almost fainted and 2 seconds later almost threw up and the whole time I couldn't see and it looked like I was is another dimension and I couldnt talk very well but now I'm healed a tiny bit

This. She has great safe techniques for the stairs, but nobody should ever encourage standing on one leg in the shower - shower stool always!
Thankyou so much!
I have been on crutches for 5 months and now no one cares enough to care me now.

How’s your hip now?
I had a hip labral tear repair surgery 1 year ago and, although it’s better than before surgery, I’m still in some pain.
Actually I’m a strong independent man
What pillow is that. I just got my hip surgery 4/29
Bone shaved to make it more rounded and fixed the Labral tear
How do you shower on one leg, and not slip?
