Patriot Liberty Niro Water Pump Job
A light bulb went off in my head when I saw your address. I am from Dallas but I stayed in Cedar City a couple of years ago to visit Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. You live in a beautiful part of the country!
+David Williams That's awesome- thanks! I'm amazed at the amazing huge concrete overpasses, nice cars and huge buildings when I visit Dallas.
Been having the same issue with my 2012 Liberty. I assumed it was some type of heat issue inside the engine bay, so what I started doing was popping the hood when I knew I would be starting the car back up after a few minutes, and that has definitely helped some, so this makes sense to me and I’m gonna try it. Thank you!
Just wanted to say that your video was a big help in changing the water pump on my wife's Jeep Liberty Limited! Thanks Brian!
Nice video, as per Standard Operating Procedure!! It was like Christmas morning, waking up and seeing a new "beiansmobil1" video notice. Cup of coffee, bowl of cottage cheese, and a peaceful morning! I also have a few "FAVORITE CARS" to work on. In the water pump category, the GM 3100/3400 sohc engine. You don't even have to drain the cooling system. What little colorant that comes out, can easily be refilled. Nothing else in the way. Just four bolts on the pulley. Remove the serpentine belt, and five bolts on the pump. Sometimes the gasket will come off easily, sometimes no, but it's right up top with plenty of access, just in case. Some cars have just ridiculous procedures, to perform repairs!!
How to check engine oil level:Step 1, disconnect the battery. Step 2, jack up the right side and support on Jack stands. Step 3, remove and replace the 3rd and 5th right rear wheel stud. Step 4, remove and replace the bulb grease in the left front turn signal. Step 5, remove two screws holding the passenger side sun visor, and support with 28awg speaker wire to the passenger head rest. Step 6, have assistant tap out the Declaration of Independence, in morse code, on the drivers side power lock switch. Step 7, drain 2.783oz of differential oil, save in a clean container for later inspection. Step 8, use special, one of a kind, unavailable to the public, at a cost of 3 times the price of the new car, holding tool #J1275/5$72?212, or equivalent , to remove one of 12 transmission mount bolts. You choose which one! Step 8, pull up gently on the oil level verification device (a.k.a. Dip stick), located in a secret location on every other unit that came off the assembly line. Step 9, pat your head, rub your belly, whistle Dixie, and verify that the engine oil level is between 1.6 to 1.6275 mm above the lower Mark, and below the upper Mark, at 73 degrees on a cloudy day. If necessary, add up to 3grams of clean engine oil, from an unopened container. (UGH!!! That step really got to me. I went thru five bottles of oil, before I could get anything out of an unopened container!!!!!!!) Step 10, obtain congressional authorization to reassemble in reverse order of the previous steps, above!! Step 11, if the check oil level light comes on after you have completed these steps, cycle the ignition hey on 27 times, while depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal in a pulse width modulated square wave pattern of 17 milliseconds, leave ignition key in the on, but not start position for 6.2 hours, then repeat steps 1 thru 10 on Tuesday!! If the light still won't go off, ship the vehicle to an obscure island in the South Pacific, for further diagnostic investigation!!
Once the vehicle is returned, proceed to "how to check transmission fluid level"! It is recommended that you have 3 NASA rocket scientists, 2 brain surgeons, and an electromechanical engineer on hand, before proceeding with that step!
But hey, they have made some serious advancement since the 73 pinto was introduced, THANK GOD!!
+roadkill5333 Ha ha! You're killing me! Truth is always stranger and funnier than fiction. It's like the manufacturers are creating process' to rival locksmith measures to keep people out.
I'm having an unbelievable amount of fun trying to get to the ONE screw you forgot to mention. The T25 under the coolant filler metal cap, holding the plastic fluid tanks in. 1 by batt, 2 on top, and I cannot even see and hardly touch it to get my big hands in there. NIGHTMARE.
Something I will be screwing around with for the next hour I'm sure...
I had the same problem. Spent probably two hours getting that one screw off last night. Absolutely no room to work. Any tricks for re-installing?
Awesome Video Brian!!!! I followed your steps yesterday and had the job complete within 2 hours from start to finish! I did the work in my driveway, thankfully it was a beautiful 61 degree day (which is odd for Buffalo, NY in February, but I'll take it) I just wanted to say thanks for this video, the garage quoted me $300 plus tax, I was able to complete the job with a $59 new water pump and antifreeze! Thanks again Brian!!! 2011 Dodge Nitro Heat 4WD 3.7L 171,300 miles.
Good video. You make it look so simple. That pump job is very similar to the Chrysler 4.7 V8, except it has a fan clutch assembly from the factory.
+Pet Rock's Garage Quite right.
+briansmobile1 Try doing the water pump on a 1st gen ford escape. Way easier as it has its own belt and is separate from the engine block.
+Pet Rock's Garage very similar if not the same setup for the v6 magnum 3.9l. 90 degree needle nose work well for getting the fan off the pulley
I just wanna say THANK YOU so Much!! I was able to do this job with just a little bit of a hassle. I’m no mechanic but this video made it possible. I changed the oil while I was at it as well since I could reach the Oil filter with the Reservoir out of the way. That has to be one of the dumbest things. Oil change is regular up keep and to put it where they did is so dumb!! But anyways Thank You A Million Man!! Much Appreciated!! God Bless you Sir!! 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Man I can relate for sure. I'm fixing to do this same job on my old lady's nitro. That's the 1st thing I thought of was changing the oil. This is my least favorite car to change oil on. I'm always cussing it threading my arm up thru the bottom of the vehicle, getting a grip on the filter and making as little mess.as I possibly can. I've seen there is an adapter that can be purchased to extend the filter out towards the radiator to make it easier to reach...just never pushed forward to try it. Concerned it'd possibly create a new oil leak or something.
Good idea to keep the bolts sequence and pulley checking. Thanks for video
:)
You do the best walkthrough, I now know exactly what im walking into all parts needed, how clips are done correctly and tools to get me through the job. Amazing work.
Had to come back to add one MAJOR thing you forgot to explain. There is a bleed for the coolent on the top inlet just before the radiator. After finishing this job truck was wanting to over heat. System must be bleed. Simply park on incline or jack front of vehicle, remove the valve (disk shaped flathead screw ) and pour in coolent until filling the void and replace. Heater core was blowing cold air and truck was overheating until I did this very simple last step.
nice to see that you're from Utah. I'm up here in Idaho I'm actually doing this water pump job for a friend of mine . she is a single mother she needs the help and I've got a little bit of mechanic cool skills. So I'm more than happy to help this girl out. I'm glad that you posted a video about it so I kind of wrap my head around see what I'm looking at here. I've never done a Dodge nitro I've done other Chrysler and Dodge products in the past and they're pretty easy. these guys down here in Nampa Idaho sold her this Dodge nitro with all these problems in it said they would fix it but never did. Everybody sees this please stay away from next ride in Nampa Idaho. Don't ever do business with these people they will burn you if they're willing to burnt a single mother they're willing to burn anybody.
Thank you for this HOW TO post. It truly made the water pump job that I did on my daughters 2007 Dodge Nitro 3.7 a walk in the park.
Thanks allot man. Your vid helped allot. I have a 2012 liberty, and in my case, the fan absolutely has to come out in order to remove the old water pump. New ones in now, and shes running great!
Good one, thanks. Great tips. I use a piece of cardboard to keep bolts in proper order. Draw an outline of the pattern and place each bolt in it's correct location.
Same engine as my 2004 Dakota. Dont forget the dakotas!
Thank you for the detailed DIY replacement
Thanks for the great video! I changed the pump in our 09 liberty with no problems.
Other than it being cheaper, one reason the impeller is plastic may be that if the bearing goes it's less likely to chew through the timing cover. Maybe.
Great mechanical video with a sense humor Great Job!
what about the cummins water pump. that should be #1 when and if they go bad. great video.
+Fonztheman01 Amen! You forget about that because it's so uncommon and it's over before you get up to speed. Here's my video on that one. ruclips.net/video/JbDMOTviFJc/видео.html
you have a great sense of humor man!
Thanks Tony!
Years ago my sister had the thermostat changed on her Mini (proper one with the A series engine) they used too much sealant which filled the bolt hole and then cracked the head when it run out of room as it was tightened up.
+heavydiesel Oh no! That's hydraulic pressure with a good seal (sealant).
+heavydiesel good to know
Very easy job I did find your bolt trick very useful and saved me a headache on the install. Great tip!
Thanks for the video I get to do this on my son’s nitro tomorrow in the parking lot probably in the rain, lived in Utah all my life never herd of Cedar valley, I live in Midway
Thanks for your great job. From Argentina, Jorge.
Well thats pretty tame to do. Never was a fan of working on Chrysler products but thats super easy. I did a radiator and thermostat job on a neighbors 2005 Ram 1500 4.7 recently....that wasn't quite as much fun. Its a nice looking truck except for they typical rotted out bedsides above the rear wheel wells. Every one I see from that vintage on the road has the same issue.
All I had to do was see the picture and I smiled. I did that last month. That was easy! :)
Wait. 5:50 is was where I started for ease of access on the Chrysler or Jeep Water Pump I did. Just had to remove a belt and off the water pump came...maybe my mind edited some steps making it seem even easier, or I was working on a different vehicle.
Whoa, Brian! Super good technique for keeping the long and short straight! Somehow I just remembered. I think there are fewer long bolts so I noted their location and actually remembered right for a change.
Happy New Year Brian!
+ManicMechanic007 Happy New Year to you and yours!
Wait wait wait, Chrysler made an engine that's easy to work on?? Holy muffins! Now I'm actually looking forward to getting one of these to work on! :D
I don't think I've owned a watch since the late 80s...
140k on the factory water pump? Not bad at all! Odd you mention the plastic impellers on VWs... I've got a '97 VW with 171k on it, and the factory water pump, which is still working great! Sadly, the previous owner used a stop leak, and my heater core is pretty much non-functional. I've back-flushed it numerous times, to no avail.
Great video, Brian! Happy New Year!
+rhkips I cheated on my heater core. I blew it out dry and soaked in in Prestone flush first. Then flushed it with hot water and repeat.
briansmobile1
Haha, yup! That's pretty much what I've done several times now. Whatever stopleak the previous owner used has just solidified in the core. Bleargh!
Great job Brian.
Happy New Year Brian and Spanky :)
BRIAN THANKS 4 ALL THE GREAT VIDEO
another great video Brian...your editing is hilarious
Thread sealant on the bolts or no?
the way he edits is hilarious
What year Nitro is that?
I've never seen one with an electric fan.
I couldn't tell what it was that you sprayed on the center hub of the new water pump. Clear lacquer or poly maybe?
+Scott Hoy 500° F Ceramic engine paint. Black of course.
Excellent job sir. Thank you 👍
Thx Brian!
?: BFATE...how often do you drain the tank on your air compressor?
Cheers
Spanky LIVES!!!
How do you remove the air, if the bleeder valve has loctite on it?
Now that you own this Nitro I'm sure it will be treated better than it ever has.
This water pump can be changed by just removing the alternator. Plenty of room without taking all the tanks out. I did one yesterday it took about 40 minutes.
Steve has been very active! I got a sticker too. Thanks for the video. Your good at explanations while entertaining. V-6 spanky??? Going there now.
thanks brian...
If you just install your short bolts first.. you'll find the long holes-- because the short bolts won't reach. Plus the long bolts stick out entirely too far in the short holes. There's virtually no way to mess it up.
thanks for the 3.7 Water Pump video.
need to do a transmission pan replacement in a 3.7 Jeep Liberty w/130 k miles.
Q: being the high mileage, should I replace the Transmission fluid with completely brand new OR mix Half-Old with Half- New fluid.
I've heard different theorys.
respect your opinion.
Walt J.
+Walt Junovich I've had the best luck doing half and half. The important thing is to clean the pan out and clean off the magnet so the metal from the planetary gears etc. can be taken out of circulation.
Thank you.
Keep making great videos 😜
05-07 Silverado 5.3 has a super easy water pump. Seems like its easier than that dodge.
Great how to Brian. You mentioned that this and the Chrysler 3.3 caravans are your favorite, but from my experience, the 3.3 on those vans are a pain. It's jammed right bit wren the engine and subframe, sometime you have to drop the front of the engine just to sneak the pimp out. Or have I been doing it wrong? What's you method on the 3.3s?
gm 31 and 34 motors water pumps are easy in the montana van 1 hour in and out for me
thanks brian excellent
here subaru is a little bit expensive , like 5000 $ with 200000 miles. plus i tink it has bad fuel mileage.. hence the reason i chose that honda with that engine so taxes will be low. I really want that model (here it cost 4000 $) that is the reason i want to know if it s any good..
I sensed some tired editing. Sarcasm and humor. I do that too sometimes. (not tired as in poor, very good editing. :) )
+DE Nichols 4am.
Looks like Brian will let anybody comment in here.
Just going with that sarcasm and humor theme.
Timex watch crew checking in... been wearing for years. Tough enuf.
im not sure how one would keep the gasket in place without putting some sort of sealer or shellac on it
+Albion Laster I would use telekinesis, but that only works when I'm lucid dreaming. It's a lot like flying that way.
have you done the timing belt on this truck yet? I'm asking because I have the same truck and just did my water pump and changed the serp belt and the same pulley you did. mine has 143k miles I'm thinking it's almost that time. also watched your heater core flush video and it worked for the truck also.
I love your videos and I don't even have a car!
Hi I have a 1996 C280, I am doing a powersteering flush, should I use synthetic or non synthetic power steering fluid, owners manual says use Mercedes special powersteering fluid, there is 2 types they said,I have checked my system and have found no leaks.
+rahul soni Most of the Daimler stuff I've worked on with the round emblems I just feed them what they ask for. They're already expensive as it is without gumming up the works with something non mineral or mineral spirit based.
no help from spanky today?
great video Brian, good info.
Hey Brian. In this video, are you using the DeWalt impact driver (with the 1/4 hex) or the DeWalt impact wrench with a 3/8 square drive?
+Shade Tree Giants B. 3/8ths drive 20V
briansmobile1 Thanks.
Is this for the 07 and newer models? My 04 liberty doesn't look quite like that. Just curious if I ever need to change it.
+Daniel Phillips 07-12
Good video all except for me having to disagree about the sealant. The right stuff is amazing however you should never use sealer on a o-ring type gasket.
Sorry brian, but you got a part of this wrong. The water circulates opposite from what you described. It is sucked through the bottom radiator hose and returned to the radiator through the top hose.
+Homer Simpson II You may have me on that. I said it that way because this and the 4.7 have the water outlet and thermostat on the bottom. You knew that right? So I figured Outlet.... bottom.... it does make more sense your way though.
briansmobile1 Actually I have never encountered a vehicle that pumps the other way. I mean what happens if the coolant gets low?? I could not pump up through the top if there were nothing there to pump, unless there were a siphon tube of some sort attached to the top radiator outlet going to the bottom of the radiator.
+Homer Simpson II I double checked and you're right! Way to go!
+briansmobile1 It's also spelled Nitro not" Niro". Just thought you might want to correct the typo in the title.
There no 3.7 engine in Jeep Patriot. You can get a 3.7 in the jeep Liberty,Commander,Grand Cherokee,Dodge Dakota,Durango,Ram 1500
Or take a piece of cardboard draw the contour of the new water pump and stick the screws through the hole marks. Easier than transferring the bolts 3 times.
Hey Brian i wnat to say HAPPY NEW YEAR, hope your family is happy :) ;
Did you use just that little compressor for working? Maybe i missed the big one :)
+Andrea Gili HAPPY NEW YEAR ANDREA!!! I do! Funny thing though. I hardly use it now anyway- Just like here- I used the cordless.
+briansmobile1 That cordless alone against axels and crack pullyes? wow i have a new toy in the wishes list. So a 50 Lt. or 13 gallons compressor could be enough? I am thinking about the air hammer often needed to struggle less. A hug from Italy
Hello brian. happy new year! i have a question for you and i need a little advice... i want to purcase my first car but here in Romania taxes are huge for cars with engine above 2 liters.. so.. i tought about a petrol engine since i dont trust old diesel cars..they are prone to more problems than petrol .. i tought about HONDA CIVIC HYBRID (first gen). i know that there are battery problem but what can you say about the powertrain? is that 1.3 engine any good? i know that it has almost no power but i don t care so much. also if the battery is dead i can just put a regular alternator and dump the hybrid system?it is stick shift. HOPE I GET AN ANSWER FROM YOU! sorry if my english is bad..
+Catalin Florin Get a 2.0 Subaru WRX. Problem solved. Right?
watches: from ~2003 to 2015, we were in the glorious period in which our wrists were free
You only need to remove the alternator,
gm 3.8 is my favorite!
Dealership quoted me over $800 to replace my water pump on my 2011 Liberty. Just insane.
nice intro dude
+silencer9112 Thanks! I kept playing it over.
no ⌚ on my arm... But my Sony is pretty much stuck with me..
Water pump might not be too bad. But the oil filter location is a PAIN!!!
Nitro*
🎏Thank You Much Brother
It was all good untill I followed your lead and pulled out the windshield washer motor...pulling it out broke the little rubber grommet and I wound up with a bad leak there when I reinstalled it...I wound up having to pull it out loosing all the pretty blue water, and loading it up with teflon tape..it stopped leaking..but it woulda been so much nicer if you had pulled the plug and 2 little hoses instead....that being said, the vid. was still really good.
You just paid "tuition" and learned something in a way you'll never forget it. Good lessons.
Only thing left out is the screw for the reservoir on the side the air box is on.. pain in the a$$ to get out
the older non square ones are way easier no coolant tank or washer tank in the way pop the belt off take the bolts off wipe the timing cover off and slap the new one in and retarted amounts of room to spare lol
Its not in the patriot. the 2.4 is in the patriot.
Thank u. 40 lbs. it is.
I even changed the idler pulley..
Video is great as always! Even better when your tired! haha
Hilarious, very helpful would watch again and again
Your comment "no Anthrax" hahahahhah
شو هاذ الرقم الي خلفك الرقم العربي wat is the arabic blit no behind you هل انت عربي
great video thank toy for sharing tou knowledge
i dont know to laugh or learnd on this video..how about both..mickey mouse..lol..great video..
looks like water pump is easier to replace than thermostat
+174joedirt Yes, quite.
LOL no anthrax or glitter, you are too funny
honestly dude a GM 5.3 LS in a truck is easier(electric fans style) except for the lack of drain cock... i wish i knew why they though that was a good idea... at least they added them back now
nice video
If its an American car, why are you using MM tools, shouldnt it be SAE?
+Papa Gleb No. Most self respecting manufactures use metric fasteners now.
+briansmobile1 good to know. Thx much for the reply.
good informative video.
you know what a pain in the rear. A broken tensioner pulley on an interference engine. :(
+argonian bilbo That's Audi TT stuff. Nobody has time for that!
+Inna7e Is that why God blessed me with one of the worst Toyota's for reliability on the planet? Hey, it got me in the business. Well a community did, including Brian, the first RUclips repair video I recall that was worth watching.
happened to my 944 but that was because of previous owner neglect. First time I drove it hard,it broke the tensioner next day. I knew I should have serviced it first. I got trigger happy. That's my learning experience
argonian bilbo
Before the torque app I wasn't all that into driving my car hard for fun....but then the torque app is how I've fixed most everything on it. Lesson: Torque App gave me an opportunity to learn a lot....breaks my car faster too, lol.
No chrome rims ;)
Love the vids!
The Liberty is way easier to do! No reservoirs in the way!! =]
hahaha. it's permanent by now! lol
lol great vid
Yes, I’m a dork. I know lol. Same though, you married?😂😂😂
