  • In this video I'll customize a pick guard with abstract art. I had to do it twice since I messed up the first time but it all turned out great in the end.

I love how it turned out! I think I’m going to paint my p-bass pickguard.

Cool! Much better than the white. Makes visual sense on the instrument as well. 😃😃😃

Thank you Linda. I have most of the hardware changed out now too and I like it a lot more.

Way cool! I love experimenting with things I’m making, like sweaters and scarves. I can’t leave the basic pattern alone, I have to add lacy sections or more cables, or integrate a picture in the middle of it. While I’m still learning watercoloring, I do experiment with how the colors flow and mix and try to duplicate the things I like. Isn’t this all part of “artistry” as a whole?!

But what if my neighbors like their new hubcaps? Also I love your pick guard. It makes me want to paint my ukulele 😬

Lol, just make sure you ask them first. Ok, don't blame me when you end up with an acid wash ukulele. Unless you like it, then I'll take all the credit. 😜

Ha! My main guitar is a 1990 "Ultra" Stratocaster. It's white and came stock with the pearloid pick guard. I've always liked it. I also have an Ibanez (my hum bucker guitar) that was given to me by a friend. It's one of those surf looking guitars. Once again... pearloid pick guard. I do not like it on the blue Ibanez.
I'm currently having a pick guard issue on a new guitar. It's a Yamaha acoustic. It's a handmade red label reissue from Japan. It's amazing and sounds better than any Martin I've heard. It has a "wood" pick guard. In reality, it's some awful textured plastic. Think of the Hahnemule sketchbook cover. Unacceptable. Especially since the pickup system is a hybrid that makes the entire top a microphone. Any touching the pick guard not only feels like torture, but makes unpleasantly loud sounds. I was thinking of just removing completely or and replacing it with a plastic one. Now you've got me thinking of doing something crazy.
What kind of music do you play?

Sounds like you need to fix that problem. I play anything from alternative to psychedelic. I just treat it the same way as my art. I experiment and see what sounds good to me then slowly develop it.

I'm not sure exactly what abstract art is i've heard the naysayers but i'd like to hear someone who draws or likes abstract art give me a definition of what it is or is it not that simple?

That is a great question to ask. In the simplest terms possible it is just art that does not resemble something found in reality, but the description does not even begin to cover the kinds of abstract art there are. I absolutely love some forms of abstract art and I can't stand other forms of abstract art. Some forms even have elements of realism but it's so obscured that your brain has to work to fill in all the gaps to even make sense of it. That is one type I enjoy. I do not like paint flung on a canvas with no regard and left to be what it is. However, if you take that same painting and go back in and add detail and develop the areas to give them form and texture so that your brain struggles to recognize what is there but it could be something, that is what I love to do and look at. Basically I enjoy anything where your mind stays engaged and is interested in what is there even if you can't make out exactly what it is. That probably doesn't answer your question but it's the best I can do. Basically if it doesn't look like something in reality but it still causes you to stare at it and engage with it, that is the type I enjoy.

@Illustrations By Pete Thank you for the definition :) I'm new to the art world.
I wonder though the type of abstract art you said your not a fan of the paint flung on a canvas kind. I wonder if someone else could then make it their job to take that flung on paint and make something more out of it or maybe that has some copyright issues.

I would definitely not alter anyone's art unless they asked me to. People can just take the idea and fling their own paint and make their own details. I do this a lot. 🙂 Thank you for the question. It's one I hear a lot.
