The man is a paragon of powerlifting longevity and a fantastic American who continues to serve the public long after his decorated military service was over.

I get ticked when people leave David Ricks out of the GOAT discussions.

This may be the first table talk that I went all the way through. Would like to see Dave watch his form in a powerlifting video.

Captain (USN) Ricks is the GOAT! I had the honor and privilege of training in the same gym as a young Marine in Iwakuni, Japan in 1982. He was humble, without ego, and willing to mentor all us young Marines. Thank you for this interview as it transported me back in time and re-motivated me to keep leaning forward despite my age/injuries. Dave, another GOAT who would make a great interview would be Master Sergeant (USMC retired) Abe Roman. He DOMINATED the 148's in the 80's and had over a 600lb squat despite his tiny quads (sorry Abe) :-) Abe Roman and Captain Ricks are the best powerlifting mentors I have ever had the privilege of knowing and training with. I started training rotation in the ankles and it has drastically improved my squat. It’s similar how to you do external rotations with the hammer.

I competed in a meet in Fremont California late 80s in the 181s Rick won the class 2nd place was like 200 pounds less in the total he was just so much stronger then everybody there. I think he made the cover of Powerlifting USA in that meet..

I went to the Junior Nationals that was held in Washington DC, there was a very tall guy for the Navy and I cannot remember his name. My Army friend and fellow lifter was on the All Army team and he was in the 275 classed the Army had a guy Capt. Joe Walden that was a great lifter 198 or 220's class. George Heschter was a SHW and opened his squat with 975 or close to it, he tried 1000lbs and missed it. Capt. Kirk was still a teenager back then.
