This video is spot on. You dont get a break at all. Drivers just have no time to stop. You start, do checks, load the van yourself, deliver, return, empty the van, reload and go again. You are on the go for 7 hours straight. You also have van checks before and after shift and he is correct, you have to drive very fast to keep to the time limits. The best drivers know the area and the addresses through experience and they save themselves time because they know where lifts and addresses are located. All jobs take time to learn but just be prepared to work for very long hours, in stressful situations and for very low pay with next to no overtime. Carrying 8 bags of shopping up 4 flights of stairs at the end of a 6 hour shift is brutal. You then have to get back, unload, do your van checks and only when you get home will you be able to rest and eat. No food, drink or toilet breaks after a 6 hour shift is just dangerous and soul destroying. You have been warned. You are operating in a system that is designed to crush the driver. That's how Iceland makes their profits by overworking and underpaying drivers. The driver turn over is ridiculous.

8.5 year Asda driver here. We get Iceland drivers moving over to us all the time. I wouldn't call Asda perfect, some days are a complete disaster, but compared to the horror stories that every single Iceland driver comes with it's clear that the grass is greener on our side.
One big problem I see across the board is the drivers failing to put their foot down and stand up for their own rights. I tell every new start that comes to us; They will give you a list of drops, all with arrival times, worked out by a computer that doesn't take into account any delays, roadworks, diversions, or just simply slow drops that take longer than the six minutes they tell us it should take. So, if the plan goes out the window just watch it go and don't worry about getting lates. We don't get paid for our breaks, so for 30 minutes a day, mid-shift, you don't work for them, so just take your break. Typically we do one run, come back to base and reload a second. After the second is loaded onto the van just stop for 30 minutes. You aren't getting paid, so tell them to sod off if they start moaning. Managers will moan, a lot, but let them moan as it's their plan that's gone tits up, not ours. At the end of the day, if you start panicking about time and you start driving around at silly speeds, it's you getting a fine and points on your license, not a manager. They will never do anything about you taking a break as they know you're unpaid and it'll come back to bite them if they kick up a fuss. So, just sit back and follow their sheet as best as you can but never worry about it going tits up. Just clock in, do the drops, clock off and go home.
Currently I'm looking at stepping up to Class 2 HGV and moving on, but if you're decent Asda will keep you on as a relief driver, so if you ever need the work it's there as they're always in need of cover and it's PAYE so you'll be paid for whichever shift you do. That's my plan.
Tesco apparently do things better, but their shifts are crazy, sometimes only three hours. At least with Asda you know it's a proper eight hour shift and a full day's pay.
EDIT: Gonna add a bit more after watching the full video. I know it's a blog at this point, but it may help someone some day. Typically Asda have two types of vans; Split and straight through. Splits are the ones that come back to reload and are much more common. These have a 50 minute window right in the middle, 20 minutes loading time and 30 minutes break. The break is calculated into the 50 minutes regardless of whether the van is returning early or late. Sometimes you get lucky and get back really early, you end up with a full hour break. They aren't arsed about it. That's the good thing about just being left to it. On the other hand, if you're running late and get back late you're gonna lose some of that 50 minutes and you may end up burning through your break. On the straight through vans the break is planned into the journey, but as you say; if you get stuck in traffic or there's a delay then that 30 minutes can quickly turn into zero. When that happens managers will start telling you that you can split your break; Have 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. That's not legally true. Again as you say; If you're going to be working 8 hours or more, you're entitled to an undisturbed 30 minutes break. This is exactly how HGV works and I've been saying for years now; Every driving job, whether it be HGV or 3.5t van, should be fitted with a tacho. That way it is a legal requirement to stop working, engine off, feet up, after a set number of hours and it totally takes any and all blame away from the drivers. The tacho is there to protect us from managers that don't believe in breaks. If they ever brought tachos to the home shopping vans then there would need to a massive shake up because most places would just crumble. Management would shit themselves.

So I turned up to work this morning at 8am, ready for my first shift with someone. I literally turned up outside the store and I get a phone call from the management. They said to me I haven’t completed my online training fully therefore they cannot start me. Then I get told I’m only doing 16hrs a week when they said minimum 24hrs. I’ve been truly fucked with before I even started. I’ve had experience delivering for Amazon, Argos, and even went self employed for a while. Never experienced anything like it.
Fuck Iceland, moving the wheels and looking for something else. I’m fuming because I’ve been unemployed now for a while. And companies just want to fuck you about now. Luckily there is plenty of delivery work available now. I’ve found a delivery driving job which doesn’t do weekends, just Monday to Friday, so fingers crossed I get that one. Thought I would give you an update. Thank you for this video, nothing but truth.

Just lets congratulate this man here .everything you have said on this clip is 100% true and I've just gone through the same thing with the Iceland company as a delivery driver. I was thinking am i the only person who is feeling that I'm failing but defiantly not its the people in the top tier of the company who is.The drivers should have 8 deliveries in a 2 hours slot whether they are on the same area or district and focus on the driver having conversation with a customer which is key to a customer having a good Esperance and wanting to come back again. Iceland its not good skills when your drivers are turning up late with peoples shopping on the last 2-3 drops on a run. And drive time on the podium is utter nonsense how does the podium know whether there is road works or school traffic. The operation would run a lot smoother if you aloud your drivers more time to get set up with the deliveries and get them to the door step in the time bracket and it would free up the time what it does if the instore staff do manage to set up for deliveries which is very rare. Well done The British Book Worm

I’ve watched this video a few times to check if it wasnt just me who was having problems with the Role, and after seeing so many terrible reviews for the driver job and working there for the past 6 months I can see why many people come to this conclusion. I’ll start by saying it is an easy job, it’s what it says on the tin, you take shopping to customers houses and that is that, if you’re looking for a temporary role around 2-5 months this job would be great! But other than this I’d avoid it at all costs, the logistics of the company are horrendous and they expect you to break your back to complete the work load. I’m finally handing in my notice today after 6 months, there are so many better delivery companies out there you could work for, if Iceland had different working conditions and more efficient driver runs it might actually be a valuable company to work for, but until then the company has an extremely long way to go, handing in my notice today and I couldn’t be happier, everything stayed in this video is spot on!

Excellent decision my friend. I think I had a bad area. If the drops were kept to 8 in two hours with both vans going out on busy periods instead of 12 - 14 and once 25!!!! It would have been doable bit it was still a poor company to work for. You struggle with one address and you're going to be 20 - 30 minutes behind next 2 hours. I wish I had walked after a few days.

I stuck it out for 7 months, working weekends and it was horrible. I was getting into work at least 45 mins early just to get out on time. I was working 8+ hours shifts without a break. I could probably count on 1 hand the amount of times I actually took a scheduled break during my 7 months there. Everything you said was spot on mate. Towards the end of my time there I was finishing early, so one of the few perks of the job was that you could go home early and still get paid for the remainder of your shift. But taking into account I was going into work 45 mins early anyway, this by far outweighed the number of times I finished early. My training was atrocious! One day shadowing another driver. On 2nd shift they put me on as the sole driver and it was horrendous. I ended up finishing over an hour later than I was supposed to. Should have just walked away then tbh.
I'm sure you've found something better anyway mate.

All the deliveries have to be brought up in a goods lift from a basement
So if you've got an delivery from a hgv into store you have to wait for the lift
Most deliveries are 20mins plus from the store and on average its 10 deliveries for a 2hr slot I've found myself getting in 45mins before my shift starts to try and keep up with the slots
Can't see me lasting much longer what kind of person works for nothing ?

I watched the first half of this video yesterday, half an hour before setting off to work as an iceland delivery driver. My first shift ever, on job training. 2 hours with another driver and then sent on me own for the next 2 hours slot. Luckily it was a 10-12 then a 12-2, ended up going 35 minutes easily past in to my own time. The reason why i said luckily because there’s the new law enforcement through cameras with entering school users roads during certain specific hours. The end story is that the system directing you at these vulnerable times of being caught by cameras should be held accountable for any and all fines incurred and this is where iceland make their profits upon the unfair suffering of others. Slavery has always existed in england and always will, there’s no changing that. whether ruling the waves or the hardworking peoples pockets. it’s all the same, friends and foe alike

Spot on video, however as another comment has pointed out, they've changed the slots to [8am-10am], [10am-12am], [12:30pm-2:30pm], [2:30pm-4:30pm], [5pm-7pm], [7pm-9pm], which is okay. Sometimes I'm dreading to receive the paperwork when I get back from a stressful run worrying how many crates I'll have to deliver on the next. Location does play a massive part. I deliver in a small-ish town with many roundabouts so traffic flow is usually sound and I find I'm rarely stopping/starting besides getting out to deliver. Only downside is that most addresses have their back gates where traditionally their front garden would be so it's sometimes a pain in the back trying to find their actual door but other than that, can't really complain too much.
One thing that pees me off is the team inside who pick for you sometimes don't do it on time and that can delay your whole shift whilst they get to go home bang on time. Or if it's not that, it's a lost crate, or a couple of products are due to be chucked into a crate I've already loaded etc... Another bonus is the £12.50 pay rise, still I believe it should be at least £13/£13.50 but it is what it is... for now... I've also been told that per door you should need 6 minutes on average so I think that's also store-dependent and location, considering the average travel time from house to house for me is usually 3-4 minutes unless I've completed an area and I'm onto the next which takes an average of 10-12 minutes to travel. I'll heavily agree with you that the manager is pretty alright with the mistakes you make occasionally, missing a crate or a product that fell out of a bag that you didn't spot for example, it just ends up on your next run as a re-drop and the customers have yet to complain to me about said mistakes. In short, I agree with this video quite a lot with how stressful and time-consuming it may be but if anyone is reading this comment contemplating whether to apply or not, my advise to you is this: If you're desperate for money, give it a try and see how you get on. You might roll a lucky dice with how your store operates. If you're not bothered with money so much and you're assessing your options, I would apply for Asda/Tesco as it seems they do have a "more working" system over there. It's clear Iceland have tried to make quality-of-life changes to improve time efficiency and healthy and safety but they still have more work to do in my honest opinion.
EDIT: 24x Cans of pop and 24x 500ml of water will be your worst nightmare. As long as you don't have any of them in your run (or lack of), you know it's going to be a pretty decent run in that time-slot.

Each slot is caped at 12 drops but the cashiers will still take more delivery's until the time slot closes. But as a driver you don't have to take more than 12 and you can flat out refuse to take anymore than what is in your contract. I currently work as home delivery for Iceland. Everything you have said is spot on. They have now removed the delivery times of the runs, this doesn’t benefit drivers only the company….they now have nowt to answer to in regards to that particular subject. Well played lol. It used to be online deliveries and instore deliveries but now they have sameday deliveries which always screw the slots over run ragged alday I have a interview with another

I did 15 in less than 2 hours, mulitple times. Location definitely plays a big part of this.

I did 18 drops regularly in 2 hours. Even in rush hour and via road works. But it is determined by the distance between drops and distance from your store. If your driving 40 minutes to one and back to your 2rd drop then 12 isn't happening in 2 hours. But am sure a few people get on alright at good stores. The few that exist.

    • @ETRTriad
      @ETRTriad 9 месяцев назад

@@thebritishbookworm2649 yeah see the longest from store is roughly 20 min, no more. It's also split between two stores, making the areas manageable.

Iceland honestly one of the worse jobs I've had, I got injured last year from doing the job! They were so unsupportive HR only protect the managers & higher ups. Since I was still under probation they pushed me out this way. I totally agree about the stress and the drain on mental health it's a complete joke. HR advised while recovering from the injury I should think of the extra stress it's adding to the staff... Like I wanted to take the time off!!! It was off due to their neglect and stupidity. They NEVER provided enough time to take breaks either
