Phil Allen is a producer, engineer, multi instrumentalist. Starting out as Warren Huart’s intern at the age of 19, Phil has had a steep career: He became head engineer of "Harmony Studios" and later on "Spitfire Studios" where he worked with high profile producers and writers like Fraser T Smith, Dan Wilson & Jack Douglas and engineered songs for Daniel Powter, Adele, Aerosmith, P!nk and Miley Cyrus. In 2012, Phil won a Grammy for Adele's "Someone Like You."
Learn not just the how, but why.
Watching RUclips tutorials and learning new techniques is great, but it can become confusing and overwhelming if you’re missing a plan, a strategy to approach your mixes. By understanding the why behind every mixing decision you’ll be able to really grow as a mixer.
Band: Jeremiah Red - ‘Renegade’
First step: Make each track sound like you wish it had been recorded if the band had a major label budget In this production, the sounds are very clean, no fancy equipment was used. We try to make it sound like it has been recorded with a ton of analog gear.
Goal: Take clean Rock recordings and make them sound like a Console/Analog mix and create a 70s Rock Vibe

What do you hope to learn from this course?
even the basics of mixing really and thanks so much warren it is something that i didn’t know i need it
General tips and the omni chanel is the waves plugin I really miss thinking about mixing it back into the chanel strip rotation.
EVERYTHING!!!!!! Hope I can share what I learned!
General Tips on how to make a sound that is "dirty" without getting muddy. "Think of how I want it to sound before I create a Sound" Great Quote. Thanks again to Warren and Phil.
Basically
1. How he managed the drums, like a good mixing engineer he did not use what make the mix muddy. Specially I am always thinking about how people make snare so good so that It can cut heavy mixes.
2. How he control the both bass is so much awesome like you have also a video on that too.
3. How he used the parallel compression on the drums and how he squashed the bass.
4. Kramer tape is used I mean wow.
5. how he managed to sound the guitar and pan them like awesome ( specially that room guitar reverb trick).
6. The decapitator from sound toys is really good on the vocals.
7 . I am flattered how he used the OMNI channel on the vocals to make them bright and cut through the mix.
Actually the arrangement and recording is really good.
He teaches in 1.5 hours but It about the experience and how many knowledge to manage such a big mix.
Loved it and it is the most valuable video So far in terms of mixing.
I mean I have not thought that even after reading 5-6 books you can't get that knowledge. Speechless, This is best of best.
Thanks sir
I heard the raw drums and I was “that sounds good.” Then I heard the improvements to the kick drum and was “that sounds better, now it’s done.” To make it short, every time he did something new it sounded better and I would think that was it, so seeing the process to the end regarding the drums was mind blowing. I would have stopped improving way before, and I’ve been mixing as a hobby, not a pro, for almost 20 years.
The first and most important thing I got out of it. "On the first go through think of how I wish it could have sounded on tape" Great Quote. Thanks again to Warren and Phil.
Thanks ever so much for that! You Rock!
career changing
Definitely one of the better mix tutorials I’ve ever seen on RUclips or elsewhere. Very cool to see someone mixing the way we used to on consoles but also using the new tech to blend the two universes together - using the best of each world!
Thanks ever so much! Yes, Phil rules!!
This video/ coarse is what I’ve been looking for the past 3 years. It makes so much sense and I can easily apply to my own demos! What a huge difference and thank you Warren and Phil for opening the door to a new production/ mixing universe! I enjoy listening to my demos for the first time.
What Phil did here, if you compare the raw tracks to the ending mix as it evolved, is practically miraculous. Hats off and thanks to Phil & team for sharing the insights. This will help so many. Well done!
Thanks warren! This was great, Phil is amazing. Keep these videos rolling please 🤘
This is just incredible! I’ve learned so much more in this video than countless hours of other mix tutorials.
Finally I was able to sit down a watch the whole thing. Awesome content as always!
Killer Vid once again Warren. One of the best I've seen for a long time. Really gets you back to sound capture and feel rather than fix it in the mix :-)
This was amazing. Thanks so much for sharing this! I’m off to try and find more content from Phil!
Fantastic! Can't wait to dive in when I get a spare minute ;) Thank you all for all you've been doing for everyone during this time. It's been a great, bright spark in these uncertain times *hugs you all*
Fantastic!! Thanks ever so much Anita!!
Thank you Phil !
Thank you Warren, you have helped me to correct many of my mistakes and I am still learning new things in each of your videos!
Thanks a lot man !
Wow, this is hands down the best mixing tutorial I have seen. The techniques on the drums are just amazing.
That's awesome. Thank you ever so much, Warren!
This course is brilliant, it definitely made me rethink how I mix rock too. Such a nice simple approach but yields great authentic sounds and powerful results. Thanks so much Phil and Warren!
For sure. I think simple is definitely the way to go. Especially if the tracks are recorded well :)
Man, this is amazing. Best mixing course I've seen. Thank you so much!
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Amazing thanks so much guys! Your generosity goes a long long way!
Thanks ever so much Cheyne!!
Thanks, yet again for another FREE set of multitracks and course. Much appreciated
You're very welcome!!
i know right! it's so kind of Warren
@@FroznColors thanks ever so much!
@John Kennedy Zawtha Even pros can benefit from seeing how other guys are working ;)
i expect to see more editing course from this dude!
good engineer。
Uffff this is pure GOLD! Thank you both!!
Thanks ever so much Martin!!
This is an amazing course! Not that long, but really amazing! I've been wondering when I'd be able to watch the next Phil Allen course. Thank you so much!
He got the job done quick ;)
Amazing to hear from someone who has work with artists at the Grammy level! Great to point out that if you don't record in the way you want it that mixing can't always fix it. Thank you for an awesome video!
Thank you, Warren and Phil, this means a lot!
Thanks ever so much Darren I really appreciate it!
My god, what an incredible job mixing those vocals. Thank you Warren and Phil!!! What a great sounding band.
Thanks ever so much! Glad you enjoyed the course!
Thanks so much! I love Phil Allen's courses that i own! "Mixing with EQ & Compression" course was a huge eye-opener when i was just starting.
I'm sure this course will be great too!
Great course, amazing for those of us recording to decent pres in an interface but without much option to shape tones on the way in. Sounds so simple but ‘getting the tones to sound like you wish you’d got them’ before mixing is a brilliant tip! Cheers Phil, cheers Warren. Will be checking out the band too, cool sort of Black Rebel vibe to them, particularly on the bass.
Wow, this was informative! Super thanks for your work, the ducking of the accompanying guitars with the side chain from the lead guitars was a revelation; i’ve been struggling with those two competing and this completely solves it!👌
Thank you so much Warren for such a great gift! Super duper appreciate that!
Thanks guys! Amazing track, had a ton of fun with this one
Brilliant From A to D to A again, Revived! What a great Artist and first take of them!
Learned alot ! Thank you so much for this ! :)
Great info, thanks a ton!
This is absolutely incredible. I'm blown away. It sounds like something I'd expect to hear if I was watching Californication (love that old series ❤) and really being taken in by the vibe and atmosphere of a scene. Thanks for giving me a new perspective. Learnt so much.
This was a really great Course. Mr Allen is a great and insightful teacher as well as a gifted engineer!
Talk about being gracious with knowledge and content. Thank you Mr. Huart. You’re a legend. Shout outs to Phil Allen. You’re teaching style and break down is cohesive, clear and concise! No wonder you’re a Grammy winner! God bless and stay healthy!
Thanks ever so much my friend!! I'm so glad to be able to help!!
No more keeping mixing secrets ;)
Incredibly well done. Thank you!
awesome video, learnt some stuff and reinforced that I've been on the right path with my recent mixes, made me feel like I'm definitely improving lately :)
this was a great video! so helpful! Thanks Warren & Phil!
Thanks ever so much!!
Fantastic info as always. Def going to use some of his ideas and techniques on my next mix. Such a great pedagog that Phil Allen. As are you Warren. Repeat repeat repeat until we get it. And love learning new stuff. On top of all for FREE while biking to and from my work. Great times in an awful time in history.
What was very cool about this was that it really shows you how a professional approaches a mix of tracks that sounds like what I might have recorded at home, as opposed to mixing a recording that sounds like it was tracked with $25k mics at Sunset Sound. That was really helpful. The mix approach and transformation of tracks that start off sounding like mine hit home better. Thank you Warren!!
Phil's lesson is extremely informative from the start til the end
Nice course, thank you Warren and Phil!!
Thanks ever so much Matias!
Wonderful resource right here. Wealth of knowledge.
Thanks A-lot.
I enjoyed that. Simple and clean. I loved that he used the NI bus compressor on his master - my ear favors that also. Interesting that he primarily used Waves plugins as well with just a few others.
Scheps Omi ?!! I have overlooked it since beginning. Thanks for the tips, Phil Allen.
Very detailed mix tutorial! Thank you!
Phenomenal mix curse! Thanks for sharing this gem! Thank you Phil Allen and Produce like Pro!
Thank YOU! You're very welcome
Thank you Phil and Warren!
You're very welcome!
Thank you for sharing this, super useful and inspiring
Great great video❤.... Don't believe I found this video so late..... Thank you my favourite channel in RUclips ....
Thank you Warren and Phil!
Hi Daniel! Thanks ever so much I really appreciate it!
Am watching it again and again
Thanks ever so much!
This course is my favourite in the entire available PLAPA production tutorials. It gave me insight in how a good recording has to sound and how to achieve it. And on top watching and listening Phil is a joy.
For sure. I love a good mix walkthrough
Thanks ever so much for this course. I think this is my favourite one so far. And I love how good the Scheps sounds! I've had this plugin for about a year and rarely used it... that will change now :-) Thanks to Phil for being an most excellent (sorry gone Bill&Ted there for a moment) tutor.
GREAT COURSE! I went out and bought Scheps Omni!
Thank you as always Warren, and to Phil for sharing this with us! I'm an experienced former live engineer and player who is JUST NOW getting into recording, so this is wonderful. Although I'm not working in PT yet and can't afford the plugins, I'll be rewatching and referring to this for tips and techniques as I go. The use of sidechains in the low end for instance is something I've very familiar with from live sound, it's the way to make a room really pulse, but the creative ways Mr. Allen uses them are...probably part of the reason he has those nice statues! Top video, guys. Cheers!
(I've BEEN recorded and produced by the likes of Jeff Glixman back in the day...just haven't done it myself to this level is what I meant...)
Really enjoyed this and learned a lot
Fantastic video and learning experience. Many thanks indeed
Great video! Thank you (learned a lot).
Loved it❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much for this. It helped a great deal. Mix sounds insanely great!
Thanks ever so much! Glad to be able to help
NICE TUTORIAL !
This video just made me renew my WUP on the Shceps plugin. haha. Great tutorial.
Thank you sooo much!!!!!
Thanks ever so much Rudolf!
Thanks W. this is awesome stuff.
You're very welcome my friend!
This a very succinct, end-to-end tutorial. Well done and thank you!
You're very welcome! Happy New Year!
Completely agree, a masterclass. The concepts can be applied to any DAW. Like the idea of using a channel strip instead of multiple plugins, although Decapitator is nicely used here!
Am really enjoying your tutorials
Thanks ever so much!
this was awesome !!
Explained a lot to me, thanks!
Thanks ever so much
Thanks so much!
Thank you! Will try mixing the multi even though I've never mixed live drums.
Fantastic!! Thanks for the great comment!

Thanks ever so much Paolo I really appreciate it!
Thanks!!
Multi-thanks!!!!!!!!
Make it simple... that's the main lesson of this brilliant masterclass. :)
Thanks ever so much
Right about the 1:08:00 mark, it starts to sound like a QOTSA tune. Nice work.
Nothing beats a free course and free multitracks!
Thanks ever so much Eric!!
What about free gear? ;)
What a freakin awesome course :)
Fo sho
great video! just got schepps omni
Thanks ever so much!
This dude is a freaking genius, the trick of side-chaining the lead to compress the rhythm guitars was G O L D!!!!!!
Sidechains have so many uses. It's awesome :)
Side chains for mix automation are tricks from those days before fader and track automation was a thing. Welcome back to 1970s mixing techniques! 😉
There's so much great stuff in this session and the sounds are incredible. I just wish he added some EQ to make some of the elements work better together, like boosting and scooping vocals and guitars on complementary frequencies. I like rough sounding rock mixes but the end result was a bit too muddy. Other than that, a huge sound for a great rock song!
So good
Man i really needed a good tutorial on this type of production. Thanks!
Wonderful! You're very welcome!
Thanks it is a Free course
Yes, it is!!
Thanks..great course. I assume you had no phase issues. That means that they must have been right
on the money with their timing..
Great Vidéo ! Thank you for sharing :)
Thanks ever so much
Thanks
Thanks ever so much
If you’re the type of person who craves for 9:02 minutes of intro dialogue prior to the first beat of any musical sound, well then, this video just may be your cup of tea..enjoy.
btw: My guess is Engineer Phil has never gotten a speeding ticket, what cop could remember why they pulled him over after asking him “Good afternoon, do you know how fast you were going?”..and after 10 minutes of listening to him recite Newtons Law of Motion, I’m sure the cop said “Have a nice day” and just walked away wondering what just happened!
I don't know what spacious means but I say yes. Thanks Warren, thanks Phil, tomorrow I will get a reamp box so that will be fun
This guy is not being bashful with the distortion
And, to my greatest surprise, it works amazingly well
Saturation does wonders for drums :)
Very Nice job......
Thanks ever so much
