  • British filmmaker and photographer Jess Kohl presents a joyful romp through one of London’s hottest new club nights-a Jewish-led LGBT space that joins queer youth culture and spirituality. “Religion and sexuality are worlds that, by nature, rarely meet,” the London-based director explains. “Buttmitzvah is a reaction to this separation. It’s about coming out as Jewish.”

I actaully know Josh, Ben, and Jess (who directed the video); they're siblings. Ben is an old schoolfriend of my brothers, and our families are close as well (also, Ben was my first schoolgirl crush, back when he was in the closet in his early teens and I was slightly younger). It's not meant to be offensive at all; Josh, Ben and Jess are all openly gay Jews.
It's meant to celebrate both Jewish and LGBT culture, for people who struggle to assimilate and embrace both of those sides of their identity. It's not just limited to Jews; I've had a couple of my non Jewish gay friends go, and even Sir Ian McKellan (Gandalf from Lord of the Rings) and Tom Daley (Olympian athlete) have been seen there a few times.
I can't police whether other Jews will find it offensive, but as a Jewish person, I'm not offended at all, and I personally know that there never any intention to offend. It's simply about providing a space where LGBT jews can reconcile both parts of their identity, and non Jewish gays can have a big party and enjoy immersing themselves in Jewish culture.
