I don't know what I was expecting under that mask. But I can say I was not expecting an evil brainwashing emperor to have a nice face with kind eyes! Like he looks like a guy who would adopt a kid like Hunter and earn being called Uncle! Like, he even sounds like a trustworthy guy without the mask! And that's the scary part! I've been saying even though he isn't as magically powerful as everyone thinks, but he is powerful and dangerous by using the one thing thing that can make or break people: his words. His calculating mind allows him to say just the right thing at the right time to get people to obey him. Yes, there's also his curse that he can use sometimes when threatening someone (like when Hunter spoke "out of turn"), but look at what he's done with his words alone! He reminds me a bit of Mother Gothel and Judge Claud Frollo: manipulating them, reminding their wards of who raised, took care, and taking them in and expects obedience in return.
So in short, he pulled a reverse Palpatine in terms of his face, where before it was nice and kind looking but got corrupted by the dark side, but with Belos, he started out as extremely creepy and terrifying, but then took off his mask and revealed a surprisingly gentle and calm face.
To all the people who think Belos looked "gentle," remember...this is the same "man" (if he even IS one) who kills Palisman for some unholy reason to stay alive
The thing I loved about the character design of Belos is that Dana obviously learned something from Avatar: make your villain look ordinary. We have no idea what Ozai looks like until that flashback with Zuko which is incredibly emotionally charged and makes you think "Oh there must be a reason as to why Zuko is so scared of him, maybe he has this really badass scar or burn or something that makes him stand out in a crowd, maybe he just looks exceptionally cruel, maybe maybe maybe." And then the camera pans up and it's just. A normal dude. A handsome one, but he wouldn't look out of place as like a CEO of some random insurance company. The point being that just because he doesn't look menacing doesn't mean that he isn't or that he isn't completely able and willing to mutilate his son to make a small, petty point. Dana took this and realized that she wouldn't have enough time to fully set up Belos as a menacing character without showing him once, so instead she did a sort of compromise in that she showed him in scenes a bunch and he was often the focus of them, but he was wearing a mask the entire time. After the reveal of his face in a very Zuko-like scene in that its a one-on-one conversation that really starts the character thinking "Hm maybe this guy isn't so great..." it isn't often that he's shown with the mask again. Hunter and Belos' interactions actually parallel really nicely to Zuko and Ozai's if you compare certain critical scenes between the two. And yes yes I know I'm the obligatory "bring in Avatar into every in-depth discussion of an animated show" person, but the character beats are very much so present.
A green scar on the face is not normal, nor is it a good sign. And I doubt it was by accident. Philip used those very glyphs on himself that transformed him into what he is now. His twisted belief on witches being evil was the result of him seeing Caleb and Evelyn together that he's blinded by the fact his older brother was under a spell, which isn't what happened.
@@tbphillips9649No, it's real. The glyphs combined with the essence of Palistrom trees created a sort of a side effect from the punch he received on his nose. Because he's been living this long, his skin was slowly starting to decompose, he can barely keep up appearances any longer.
He is not Philip. Philip was a human. Belos' ears have some point. Also, something I actually forget a lot, Philip was in the demon realm 400 years ago

To be honest I don't know what I was expecting him to look like
The handsomest people often are the most scary
If you keep picking, it’ll never get better.

Well apparently his green scar is fake

can you make them react to STEVE when he shows his face?

Wrong except for the last part

Eh I honestly loved the menace Belos brought to the screen but now I can only see middle aged soccer dad with a scar
