When a Day goes from Bad to Worse, 1961 Volvo BM Engine Blowing White & Black Smoke

  • Snow Plow Down, Heavy Snow and an Ice Road to Town well I am just having a Party!
    The Volvo BM Backload has been having problems starting the last couple of day and has been running so badly it is almost impossible to plow the snow. White and black smoke is now coming out of the exhaust and it will not longer idle. The only warm space in is the wood shop so everything is pushed aside to get it inside and start to diagnose the problem. I have to be back into the village in 18 hours!
    Thank you.

    Just the act of tightening that pinch bolt would turn it so the damage didn't align with the slot, and eliminate most of the backlash. Perhaps this is why the problem 'went away' all those years ago. Glad you finally got to the bottom of it - hope you have caught up on the missed sleep.

      I was going to go there first, however it happened before and it just died, and of course I could not remember what or where. I did have my suspicions about the fuel system though as you could see so went with my gut first. Just goes to show my gut feeling is not always right! As for the Land Rover, I had my share of that trash to many times. As you know I moved to the dark side and purchased my Landcruiser almost new and have never had any problem given our 20 year love affair and I have been places the other cannot go is all I have to say about that.

    Very good job Simon. It was so sad to see this old lady coughing and puffing smoke in the beginning, and you did a fantastic job when you found out what was wrong. When you pulled out the dieselfilter, I first thought it could be bacterias in the diesel, I don't know what it is called in English, but in Norway we call them "diesel-animal" eller "dieseldyr" in Norwegian. They can clog up both filters and injectors, and a friend of mine always got killed because of it - when his boat engine stopped and the boat was smashed against a reef north in Norway. Lucky he saved his phone and could call for rescue helicopter to pick him up. The boat engine stopped because of the bacterias in the diesel.
    I see you have alot of snow up north too, we got very much here in southern part of Norway, so I have done alot of plowing with my tractor too. Stay safe, and I hope the old lady will run nice the rest of the winter. Greetings from Norway

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  13 дней назад +1

      Thank you, I had no concerns over dieseldyr, this is a huge problem for marine and red diesel but I have to use fresh refined diesel here the government give us no breaks at all. But I did know the tank is getting old a rotten and the tanks I use to fil it are not good either. Sad dory about your friend, that is a very bad day and he mush have lost his boat too. I have been out last 2 days and she runs real nice now so I also hope we have no more problems through the winter. Thank you

      @arctic-rebel  13 дней назад +2

      Hi Mike,
      Your on the right track, it may have been a sheer bolt originally I don.t know but it is not now, it is a metric machine bolt of the hardened type with a mismatched nut on the other end. The BM engine is a replica of an English PETTER thus everything would have been imperial Whitworth. I cannot remember now which one of the B or M now which studied and work in England before joining forces with the other to produce these machines but one was the engine man and the other machine and thus BM which was bought out by Volvo but mine is all BM just badged Volvo. Anyway the point is these engine as as strong as they get generally. The advantage of the BM over anything English is that they could choose all the best parts from across Europe thus the Bosch parts and not Lucas. Don't get me wrong English was strong but the Germans refined the engineering of the finer parts such as the injectors and injector pumps. So the Generator engine and the BM tractor engine are very similar in as far as the cast mouldings came from the same set of drawings but one was cast in England and the other was adapted and cast in Sweden. Both about the same age and both still running. However if the Generator engine had worked as hard and the tractor engine it would have been scrap a very long time ago because to the missing German parts. If there were to be any doubt, take a 1960 Austin and a 1960 Benz or we could go to the extreme and take NASA, no Germans there would have been no Nasa and no Challengers!
      I digress, yes the hydraulic pump drive belts are flapping. They have been for more than 10 years and need replacing. To remove then you need to remove the rear pump drive shaft. When I measured the belts in September to order them I noticed the UV joint had worn so badly the cups were dethatched and it was going to fail. As usual I have to save for such a purchase but the heating pump took priority. The lack of snow in October and November means my Jan invoices will be small and may only cover the diesel already invested in. I will change the belts when I replace the UV joint or entire drive shaft given the other end must be hanging on. My fingers are bleeding now and am in need of more coffee. Take care my friend and as always thank you very much.

    • @Hallnout
      @Hallnout 13 дней назад +2

      @arctic-rebel understand completely. When I bought my 52' Ford 8n tractor w/loader the fella was in the middle of 6volt to.12v conversion along with a single wire alternator upgrade, doing away with the generator. Unfortunately for him but turned out well for me, but him and his spouse decided to divorce. He was selling things off w/o her knowing. I got it cheap and even delivered to me at home.
      Anyways the fan belt for the generator was to short so I needed to add a much longer one but in order to do that you basically have to tear the tractor about halfway apart since the pto shaft goes all the way through to front of tractor and bolts to hydraulic pump.
      I bought one of the belts that are widely used in industrial and farming applications where your able to add links and take links out. Many people dont realize their even made, never knowing of their existence. It has proven successful and glad I didn't spend time tearing it.
      I appreciate your bloody fingers and your reply. My original was a mile long also so I edited it. Take care. Be safe and we'll see you on the next one. Thanks.

    I hope it warms up in the short future, I'm officially freezing. It finally happened, the impossible it snowed six inches here in Panama City Florida, USA, after four days the snow is slowly melting but it refreezes overnight. If you clean each injector then bypass your gas tank and run the clean diesel from a container, if possible. I think it's a fuel delivery problem and if you clean All of the injectors but continue to use the old fuel delivery then it will just clog again. Simon I'm not a real mechanic but it's easy to clog the injectors, they spray a fine mist. My guess is that you have bad fuel. I have faith in you Simon.

      Hej Anders, not the original at all, it is a metric machine bolt the original would have been an imperial slide bolt to fit tightly. I looked for over 1 hour to see if I had any but no. I can get the correct bolt from England and will order the correct one when I do the job. You would be able to make one in your shop if you were doing the job! The condition of the fuel in the filters seemed poor. Im curious what the makeup is of the fuel way up there. In northern Vermont, we get lots of below 0F in the winter and a week or two down to -26F for a week or so. Below about 10F, trucks coming up.out of Boston and NY often are on the side of the road with gelled #2 diesel. Our local diesel is cut with kerosene at the distributor and people use Power Service or Howes additive. Is your diesel cut with lighter distillate for the brutal cold there?

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  11 дней назад +1

      That's a good question but I have no idea what the make is, rubbish I am sure. The diesel seems very thin and when I run the old engine on it there is a distinct knock. You can tell the difference when they run on old and I mean old diesel fuel. I pulled a scania snow plow out of a field 8 years ago which had been sat their 20 years with full diesel tanks. They loved it. I have never has gelled diesel here so that should give you some idea. Even the heating fuel does not need any pre-heaters in line. I do however suspect the major cause of the filters is the original tank. I know it needs replacing and will plan for a plastic tank replacement in the summer.

    You probably have rust in the diesel tank Simon. Common these days with that miserable environmental cat piss they sell us in Sweden. It's not like diesel in the old days when it actually contained real oil instead of water flowers farts and whatever.
    You will have this problem again and always when the time is really bad.
    Combined with condescending water from a tank that is heat warm heat warm and never full you will have more problem.
    If you decide to pull out the tank to really clean it from rust there is few ways to clean it.
    There are a number of expensive chemicals out there. Attaching it to a concrete blender (or whatever it called in English) and add nuts and bolts and rustremover and bla bla.
    I've done that but ended up using just hot water and caustic soda. It will start a chemical effect and boil, and you will be surprised how effective that is. It literally eats rust. Not for too long, though. Or else the metal will go black.
    But that isn't a huge problem.
    Wash the tank and dry it over the night.
    Then, get some real diesel.
    There is ways to get some even here.
    Also, make sure to check the oil level on the injection pump. Drain it from water if necessary and fill new oil.
    Maybe this isn't the problem. But I've seen so many rusted diesel tanks these days with this bad diesel they sell us, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's your problem.
    I just want to help.

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  13 дней назад +1

      LOOOL, love the description of diesel today. I can tell you something else about that. Sometimes the old people need the heating tanks removed and it has the old black diesel. She just loves it, runs quiet and strong but I never get very much it is just what is in the bottom of the tanks. Moving onto the tank, I have had it out and clean it 7 years ago because it was rusted through and I had to braze it on the seems. Cleaning it is no use it needs a liner or and new plastic tank. I want to fit and new plastic tank. I have much room in there to be able to fit a large boat tank or anything that will fit and is 200 litres or more. Summer project.

    EITHER
    See if you can find a threaded plug in the side of your intake manifold , that you can install a small ball valve with a place for a plug in it , so you can keep dirt out , & that you can remove to allow you to insert the needle of a WD40 can ,so that you can spray in the WD40 oil . This is what I do to start the engine , I have this set up permanently installed .
    Either is very hard on an engine , it is DRY. & can wash the oil of the cylinder walls .
    The engine will run good on only WD if necessary!
    The engine will run totally on WD
    You talk about a hole in the injector ; Infact there should be 4 ! They are very small !

      Like I explained, it does not need anything to start it ever. So I don't need to do all that just find the no start issue and solve it. These injectors only have one hole, like me there are old and simple.

      @@arctic-rebelvery good .
      I use this set up to start the engine if I have run out of fuel , rather than bleeding the injectors on the top of the engine & getting diesel all over everything

      Ok, but running out of fuel for me is a death sentence so we don't do that.

    Probably condensation in your diesel tank…

    • @arctic-rebel

      You naturally get that here, you can reduce it by keeping the tank full but on this occasion water was not the issue or has ever been during my ownership. Water here is your enemy.

    Those machines came with a door, can I ask why you don't run it during the snow season cuz at least you could keep the cab warm. I'm absolutely sure there's good reason. If you haven't got a door for it, could I suggest that during your brief summer of 2025 you build yourself one even if it's out of wood & perspex. I ask this cuz I worry about you catching your death out there when you are capable of fixing that problem, installing a heater if you haven't got 1 & making you morning snow clearance safer & more comfortable. Please please please

      Why haven't Vevor sent a diesel heater for Simon to demonstrate? Most other channels have already done their demos 😂. In the old backloader it would really become useful during cold winters.

      Their are so many video's of mine explaining the what and why fors including a video of the full restoration of the said door. If I were you I would be more worried for my safety if I were to operate it with the door. It has the factory heater, again mention that many times and did a video on getting it fully functional. Lets compare it to a candle in the middle of a field on a damp misty night. So to be clear the door will not make anything safe or comfortable on any level.

    I’d get that thing inside before you cause more damage to the engine before it becomes a really expensive to repair/fix

    It's number one it is all wet if falty switch it to number four it starts on one, 1324 starting order don't use starter fluid it will become dependent on it use a small drop of petrol or a flaming rag instead.is there oil in the injection pump rack could be stuck. You bleed by opening air nut on top of pump on the inline pump as you did and by opening number one injector nut on rotatory type pump you don't have to bleed injectors on in-line type ther should be adjustable seat screws on the timing shaft that are lose
