  • On February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the south-east of Turkey, marking the strongest earthquake to hit the country since 1939. Its epicenter was close to the large city of Gaziantep with a population of more than a million people. The tremors were also felt in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and on the border of Armenia and Georgia. According to Erdogan's latest statement, the death toll from the earthquake could surpass 44,000. More than 170,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged, including the Turkish Roman fortress of Gaziantep and the UNESCO World Heritage Citadel in Aleppo, Syria.
