Platform 8 at Southern Cross was also used for Gippsland Line trains before 15/16 were constructed, which used electric locomotives many years ago when the line to Traralgon (and then later Warragul) was electrified. I believe the electrification now only exists for the special events services though.
I'm not sure of the reason or if it's indefinite, but for the last couple events this year Flemington trains have run through platform 14 at SCS instead, which is normally the Newport group. They ran through from Flinders and I presume via the loop. It didn't displace any services but I'm pretty sure it also caused a few delays on the normal services it shared with.
Did anyone else get the "stabled" comment? For RRL works in 2011 and 2013, trains ran to Racecourse from where express bus replacement services to Albion were operating. This also occurred in 2018 for the Buckley Street LXR. The other quirk, now long gone, is that the signalling system was switched from normal day to day operations when only stock trains ran to the saleyards to when Show or Race specials were operating. Don't know the details of how. The hand-operated gates at Ascot Vale Road on Race days were manned by 4 blokes, one per gate, to expedite the opening/closing process, with a separate signalman in the adjacent box.
Correct me if I am wrong, Flemington Racecourse trains do not stop at Showgrounds platform. As you said, despite not being the end of the line, Showgrounds is unique in that it has only one platform, on the Up side - no platform on the downside. Is there another station in Melbourne where there is only one platform despite up and down tracks? East Richmond is close, having an Up and Down track with no platform but it still has a platform for both directions. Coburg prior to level crossing removal and rebuilding, would have met this criteria. White City was another such station.
Imagine if they extended the Racecourse line to Highpoint. It takes around 44 minutes according to PTV to get to Highpoint with public transport from the city… not sure how they will do it or whether or not it will have benefits, it’s just a thought.
You forgot to mention stopping patterns Most of the time trains only go to showgrounds OR the racecourse ( where they have 2 platforms they can use) but on rare days there events at BOTH venues and you get the racecourse mixing with the show crowds which is very weird
Flemington railway line was the very first railway line to be electrified. The purpose was to test the design of the electrified system from the overhead power system to rolling stock traction before it went system wide.
surely stony point takes that crown
The only other contender. But mainly just for one reason being diesel trains

Very interesting video. An extra oddity about the line colour is that it shows up a yellow on the new Comeng and Seimens PIDs.
Happy Friday! It's great to see you still creating content. In my opinion, it's the trains that make Melbourne/Vic.
Thanks :)

Stony point technically counts as only having a platform on the down side because it has a passing loop.
