Fly Tying Tips - Craft Fur

- In this video, we cover several different tips for tying with Craft Fur. Tying flies with Craft Fur is one of my favorite things to do! Craft fur offers some very different perks compared to it's natural counterparts (marabou, bucktail, etc) and comes in a lot of different colors.

Mr. Wise, I'm an old geezer who has been tying for around 60 years now and have been watching your channel since it started. Let me say that I don't have any credibility about tying other than I've been around for so long! That being said, let me say that I think that You and your Buddies F'n ROCK!!!! I've learned more about building streamers watching you than I have learning and experimenting on my own for many years! So God bless you and your other cohorts for teaching this old dog some new tricks!!!
Keep on doin what your doin!!
Sincerely, Snook Spanker
(Down on Fla's Nature Coast)
Thanks, Peter! Very cool to hear, appreciate you watching.
Brian first thing I want to say is Thanks .I have been a fly fisherman and tier for years. I, like everyone else use you-tube as a vessel to learn the art of fly tieing . Of all the channels out there there is not one, in my opinion that offers what you do. You are the bomb. I just found your channel and have learned more in the time it has taken to watch your how to videos, than I have watching any other site. The content is far above anyone else out there. Keep it up,
Tight lines & Thanks again

Wow! Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching!
Hello from Eureka Missouri! Thank you very much for these videos. Really helped me not be as confused when looking at starting to tie baitfish flies. I’m going to get started real soon thanks to you clearing up some of my confusion! Instant sub from me, you are a legend
Brian thanks for the shout out on Dunda Sauce, hope you are enjoying it. Also this was a great tips video, love learning. Still trying to master strung fuzzy fiber in a dubbing loop, you and Gunnar make it look so dam easy. Jim Doak
Thanks for everything, Jim! Much appreciated!!
Great tips. I never thought of the rabbit strip thing. Thank you for sharing so much knowledge with us.
Just started playing with craft fur this week. Thanks for the education!
Zonker strips. Friggin brilliant.
Dumb & Dumber when Lloyd is pissing in the bottle.

I sent you a DM on your instagram
I just started tying and like you expressed. When it gets wet it gets thin. I like that and it’s easy to tie with for beach patterns and I appreciate tying sliders or snook muddler variations. I feel fur really does the trick as you stated once you start you don’t want to stop.
This is a great video! Thanks for the tips! Love your channel!
Thanks for watching!!
I keep coming back to your videos, thanks again for the helpful content!
Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the tips man. Just found ur channel and immediately hit subscribe. Definitely going to try the zonker strip trick. Never would have thought of that. Looking forward to more vids.
Thanks! Tons more videos coming!
Great advice on the craft fur! Going to be burning some up this weekend!
Hahaha, DO IT!!
Thanks for the UV tip!
Great tips on craft fur Brian keep em comin!
Thanks, Aiden!
Thanks Brian! I prefer the built-in taper of natural materials like bucktail but have been experimenting with craftfur and like it a lot. The thing that I discovered was that I had to be careful not to remove too much of the under fur as the amount underfur shapes and controls the profile of the wing - my first craftfur streamers were real skinny when wet :) Like you, I use the UV resin as a "styling gel" - it is a great way to make thin, high profile "sunfish" streamers that the local bass are very fond of. Cheers!
Right, there is a fine line between not too much underfur, and not enough.
Great stuff
Thanks for the tips it's very helpful I'm stared tieing fly's
Awesome. Thanks so much. Craft so cool
As always great info 😉
Thanks for watching!
Thanks, lots of great info 👍
Thanks!
The zonker idea is pretty awesome! Definitley gonna try it. If you lose a subscriber over the next few days, it was probably me because my house burned down.
Hahaha!!!
Congratulations with your expansion of the Knucklehead. I'll be looking for some of those to use.
Thanks!!
@@flyfishingtheozarks Looks like a great bass fly if scaled down a little.
Your right , get as much as you can because you will use it . Thanks for the video
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
I came up with the craft fur zonked idea before seeing your video and they other guys aswell. So I have my own glue to reinforce the strips. Fabritac fabric adhesive is great if you spread it into the backing. Ill cover the backing of a good size craft fur mat, then spread the glue into the backing. This makes for a nearly indestructble fly/jig. Pike hammer hard, and they've NEVER fallen apart
Thanks for the explanation. I need a go to streamer for going after bigger trout on the South Holsten in Tennessee. Any patterns you tie that u might recommend? Sorry for all the questions but I believe in asking the experts. Thanks again for everything
Can't go wrong with Double Deceivers, Knuckleheads, Dungeons, Sluggos, Twerking Minnows....etc.
Awesome video thank you! Do you have a purpose for the underfur? I hate wasting so much of it and was curious if you’ve found a reason to keep it. Thank you. Sorry if I missed this in the video.
You 'can' use it as dubbing. Also, if you use some of the longer fibers with the underfur, you can use them in a dubbing brush.
Brian, is there any way you can see how many times I watch a video? I love this series, I love coming back and each time seeing a new trick I can use. One trick you have left off is that keeping a handheld vacuum at the bench is imperative when craft fur.
Hi Brian. Great video as usual. Question, on the knuckle head , what does the foam do for the fly. It’s very interesting just wondering what action it puts on the fly. Thanks for the help
So, the foam on the Knucklehead forces the fly to keel. If a fly falls on it's side, it will not react to every single cross-current you rip it across---the Knucklehead will "right" itself WAY quicker with the keel weight of the hook and the slight buoyancy of the foam in the head so it reacts to cross-currents really, really well. Something all swim-flies should do.
Thanks for the lesson Brian, lots of good stuff. I saw you out there on the Nordic Angler's live a couple of weeks ago. I made a deal on a motor home this weekend so I may be down that way in the spring. Better hide the women and children. Keep the good stuff coming.
Haven't tried it yet but maybe a heat gun would work to melt the back of the craft fur instead of a lighter. Thanks for your videos. Lot of great content.
Yes!! Great idea!
My favourite to date and that was before you solved my headache, I've been trying to find a better way of getting the wing to sit for aaaaaaages
Nice!
I tie crappie jigs… how would I use craft fur for the body?
Hi Brian. Quick question. Looking for a 7 wt for brown trout. Throwing good size streamers. Mostly the one from you😀. Any thoughts on a good rod that won’t break the bank.
Thanks again for your thoughts. Dave
I am a big fan of the Redington Predator, super affordable, great rod.
kewl tips thanks for sharing
Appreciate you watching!
I cut my craft fur pelts in half so it's easier to get consistent clumps cut from them- something Niklaus Bauer showed on one of his videos.
Looks good dry absolutely how about wet does it give dan the meat 😓 the meat sweats when wet or does it look like 👍 🤔
nice vid
try being a lil more enthusiastic for the best channel on youtube
What weight rod should you use for the Kunkle Head?
I checked out the knucklehead vid. Size 8
Yup!
Can we get the link for how you made the brushes?

Appreciate the tip on UV shaping. Just bought 3 packages of Craft fur to make some baitfish patterns. Thanks a lot Brian! 👍👍👌🎣 Now going to search to see what movie your quote came from. 🤔😂 (*Dumb & Dumber😄)
After making those craft fur zonkers, you could also clamp those using a CDC or Pettitjean clamp, then make a great collar or head using a dubbing noodle technique. Then sit back and enjoy some of grandpa's cough syrup.
For sure!!
Brian, I know this was not the point of the video per say, but I was curious as to the size of that chartreuse pattern to quickly whipped out. Lol Just hook size brush size, and Eye size. Streamers are quite new to me esp the bulkhead and craft fur styles and am looking to see your sizing proportions. That looks to be about the size im am hunting for and can scale up or down on my won probably from this base. Loooooove all the vidoes. so much help and great patterns. Congrats on the knucklehead. Im going to be giving that one a go as well!!
I just threw that thing together real quick for the video, #2 B10s....comes in at about 2". Cool little zonker fly though!
@@flyfishingtheozarks agreed! Lol
Also, I should thank you. Ive tied a bunch of awesome flies because of your videos. Thank you.
@@carlogert3714 Very cool! Thanks so much for watching!
I use Harleine 100 percent of the time
I like this video.
But i want to point out something. Baitfish flies look skinny when they're wet and out of the water. Under water, they bulk out again almost like when they're completely dry and out of the water. Show the baitfish under water and you'll see it's not as bad.
When fly tyers wet their flies then hold them up to the camera, that's not what they'll look like under water. I've seen this a lot.
Tightlinevideo shows how to tie Lefty's deceiver and his video demonstrates this effect well. It does how itlooks wet out of the water then how it looks in the water being fished. Big difference. Check it out.
Loco te quedato preciosos sos bueno en atados de mosca pelo
Congratulations on MFC picking up your first fly design in the Knucklehead there Brian. Nice craft fur tying tips and tricks as well
Thanks!!
You are quite welcome. Every fly designer, streamer junky dream of a company picking up their functional work of art. 😎🎣
Is craft fur from craft stores still good?
Not usually. It is super short.
Dumb and dumber lol great video as always
"Don't you go dyin' on me!"

The movie was Dumb and Dumber.
Very Casey Neistat 😆
Skip the first 6 minutes of time consumption, folks.
The first 6 minutes has nothing to do with craft fur! Did not enjoy that. The section on craft fur was good.
Having to fast forward through 5 minutes suxed.
Blah blah blah
