It looks like a game that modders can do wonders with. Right now, the spells look a little underwhelming, but let modders do their magic and I can see this being a game easily worth 100 hours plus. This goes for the look of the game as well, maybe in 6 months or a year, we'll start getting total conversion mods that really change up the look of the world.
i get why some ppl (or more like most ppl) would consider the need to combine magic with warrior/ranger a downside but for me personally its a huge plus, cause spellswords are my favourite in any rpg so i would combine spells with swords anyway :D

@honestbenny How? Did they add more sliders for detailed customization? Because thats what BG3 CC lacks for me. Unless its at least at Veilguard or DD2 level, its no option for me.
*Pro-tip:* If you don't have the strongest PC, but you do have a high refresh rate display, then you could try capping the framerate to 40 fps and set the display in 120 Hz mode, or even 50 fps at 100 Hz. It should still look a lot smoother than 30 fps at 60 Hz and it'll be a lot easier on your PC. I actually used this trick when playing Elex 2 (which is pretty badly optimized). Even my PC could run the game at fairly high framerates, the fan on the GPU was on full blast! By capping the framerate to 50 fps and setting the screen to 100 Hz it still looked and felt pretty smooth but the PC quieted down quite a bit.
This really depends on if you have a variable refresh rate display or not. With VRR as long as the game is delivering consistent frametimes and the framerate is above the minimum that your monitor supports (often 20hz) then you should get a smooth experience. Of course it comes down to personal preference.
@ I've never seen a VRR display going as low as 20 Hz! But it's hard to even find that info on most displays. What I heard that VRR displays have a hard time syncing below 60 Hz. Do you know which brands or models can go that low? I have a Samsung freesync display but I don't think it can go that low.
Looks cool. I personally wish they just made another pillars game instead...Deadfire was amazing, but I understand it didn't sell great. But I'll still play this, it looks dope.
I think my biggest problem with the art direction (not style) is the lighting of the world. This is very very workable however, and making the game's seemingly sun-touched world less that, would serve to make all its other elements graphically pop more. I also think the tone and color hues are great in terms of choice, but they simply need to be using slightly contrasted colors, in addition with making the world a lot darker, it'd make those colors seriously stand out but not an in-your-face kind of way. Overall, the game world's visuals got a solid foundation and most of what it needs is lighting and tone work. Although on a personal note, something about the characters faces - specifically humans - feels very...let's say it's almost as if they took a template NPC face mesh, added a few touch-ups, and went from there. Maybe I'm not seeing this correctly, not having played the game, but if I am, I hope they work on it.
This is in no way a criticism towards the game, just my personal opinion. The only thing that is making me not interested in an Obsidian game for the first time is the art style. I am not saying every game has to have a serious tone and art style, but when everything is colorful, bright, and happy, it is very hard to take anything seriously. Perfectly understand that this is the tone of the game they wanted to make. Just not for me, same reason I skipped Dragon Age.
Bright and colorful works in a sarcastic way for sci-fi- it's beautiful, but alien beauty is dangerous. In a fantasy setting, all those colors feel less dangerous and more whimsical. I get it. Not a huge fan either.
I can't stand dark gloomy hazey games like Elden Ring and of recent Stalker 2. Meh yuck depressing. Nothing I want to explore or look at. See people are different, pretty amazing huh. Neither is wrong, preference. Game On!
I have a bad feeling the rpg aspect of this game will not be as good. Not being able to equip your companions or talk with them outside of the camp is a biiiig red flag.
It looks insanely dated. I mean pre 2015 level of graphics and animations. This game when it was first shown as a concept trailer was very misleading. It looked cool as hell. This is not even remotely similar to that trailer. It's the typical clownish style look to the game.
The art doesn't bother me at all, it's called living lands for a reason, The sample we had in the queen's tower in deadfire was even more colorful than this
Those character models are awfully uninspired. The combat literally looks like The Elder Scrolls: Blades mobile game. And that fisheye perspective. What were they thinking?
I personally just wish they would tone the UI down a bit... I can live with a cartoony high fantasy look, but all the highlighted UI elements together with the damage numbers and effects is too much for me
I just really hope there are some more movement skills to unlock in this game because just stepping around casting spells and swinging like Skyrim... I don't know if that's enough these days. Is there any kind of dodge, roll, parry, sidestep, or hover move or ANYTHING like that?
Lol are your strandards in the trash or something? I could get this game for free when it's patched like crazy in two years and I would still be upset that I wasted a second with this garb game lolz
@@justalil4cylinder664 Nope. So there is a chance I will be wrong about some stuff and it might be better than I thought. That happened to me with silent hill 2 this year lol. But come on lol am I not allowed to take a look at previews and make a opinion? Thought that's what previews were for?!?!?! Doesn't look like it will be anywhere close to the level of sick games like breath of the wild, witcher 3, or elden ring that's all I'm sayin : ) No way will it get mass praise from me already though. You can judge certain things without playing yo. Game already confirmed some really bad crap before launch lol. It's digital only in that sneaky bs sort of way. The physical disk is nothing without the one time use burn code so it's online only while pretending to not be. Absolutely terrible. If you end up liking the game it's gunna be a pain in the azz playing it in the future as you will have to keep up with newer versions on newer gaming gear. Meanwhile I still play odst on a 360 from time to time because it's great and I can. This wont be a reality down the road with games like avowed. Massive L by doing that. So don't get me wrong lolz I'm not just some blind hater dumb azz over here lol I'm basing my thoughts off of my experiences and all that jazz. Obsidians done some great games like FONV but you know... That was a while ago and that game, as good as it is, is kind of a joke in terms of how glitchy it runs so this company has always at least... Kind of sucked. They clearly just suck more these days so confidence isn't the highest lolz. And implying folks need to play in order to judge is kinda silly. I already proved it's possible to judge certain things before launch. Before actually playing. I have eye balls. I can see frame stutters. I can see clipping. I can see copy and paste broey cod mechanics or grapple hooks or whatever dumb trend that keeps getting abused in whatever game is in the works. I've also played games that I HATED at first... But then later learned to love. And then there's games I loved at first but now I will never play them as I've found stuff that's much better or maybe I just changed and don't like it anymore for whatever reason lol. You know it's happened to you as well soooo... Maybe not use this as a gotcha? See the problem with this logic? Would if I said the new cod sucks because it's online only, has micro transactions, feels like the same game every year basically, and has a pretty unfinished launch, especially on pc. Also massive lag online. I know this information is true and I haven't even played it. Are ya gonna tell me to shut up about that one too? Come on lol be reasonable. Sometimes you can just sorta tell how a game will be. You might be off a lil but that's about it. RARELY do we ever think a thing will be absolutely terrible and then it turns out to be ocarina of time quality. That like never happens haha. Usually people guess these things fairly accurately. And it looks like I nailed this game quite accurately. Wont be the worst thing ever but it wont be anything special that's for sure. Especially with that fake physical bs they are pulling. Also heard they wanted to make this coop and then scrapped that idea. Super lame... Also heard them doing some weird pre order crap that's totally not worth it, largely thanks to the better deal over all that game pass is offering. I got my beef with game pass as well but that's another topic haha. I hate owning stuff for only a limited time lol. Feels wrong. Just gimme my game so I can own it until I die thanks... Anyways. Sorry for the long rant. I just don't fully dig what you just said man. Here's a example... "Yo bro, you don't know that next years cod will be online only, unfinished at launch, and full of micro transactions. Lol you don't know! You haven't played it yet! It might actually be one of the best games ever made!" I get your point but do you get mine? lol I think there needs to be a middle ground is all. Don't trust the devs completely... But don't distrust them for no good reason either... So I'm being fair. I'm calling out what sucks and what currently looks like it sucks. That silly T1000 run animation. Those janky faces. Doesn't look the best... Very colorful game and the frames look smooth. It's not 100% bad lolz.
As someone who likes this artstyle and feel it fits with the painterly style of the Pillars games, I'd like to know what you don't like about it? This isn't an attack it's a genuine question. It's not photo-realistic but it's also not "full pixar" like Veilguard, so I'm wondering what specifics are detracting from the game.
For me, it's hard to describe. I don't want to say it's because it's so colorful because that's not it. I don't hate it at all but it does feel off-putting to me
It's probably the atmosphere and the feel of it. For example, games like The Witcher 3 and Skyrim had really immersive atmosphere, the world was so interesting and exploration was so rewarding. Color grading, lighting, environment design play a big role in creating the feel of the game. For me personally Avowed has a bit of a generic lighting and colors. The environments don't look interesting enough to encourage exploration, the world doesn't feel like a world you'd want to escape in, like it did in The Witcher and Skyrim.
@@ShapeologyI don’t think that’s the art style in this case. I think the graphics as a whole just aren’t up to par with newer modern triple A titles. Am sure the story the dialogue and reactivity including character progression is there because it’s Obsidian, but the level of graphical quality look like a mix between Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 3.
obsidian games with there choices are still honestly the best in the business, nice to see this game seems to carry on that trait. Game looks great now, has a very Pillars of eternity vibe so as a faof that game im pretty happy. Nice to see lore notes and item description is still really deep.
I don’t see any appeal in this game knowing that it’s almost 2025. The fire , the combat, water physics all look outdated. Black desert graphics are better and that’s a 10 year old game. Obsedian is a solid company tho but that’s it.
I love a good sword and sorcery game that lets me escape the modern world and immerse myself in a deeply-imagined fantasy universe. If that's what Avowed has to offer, I'm in.
@@Oozaru85 As long as it's not done to excess, or in a ham-fisted way, or in a way that breaks immersion or rides roughshod over player choice, I can put up with it. I don't like it, but I will still be able to enjoy the game.
Pretty interesting contrast between yours and MrMattyPlays' review, where he kinda stated that there were tons of conversation and dialogue that he was experiencing. Maybe you were doing too much exploration proportionally to interacting with NPC's and quests?
I think I’m just stuck on the original mood/visual atmosphere of the first time we saw anything about the game. It was dark and forbidding, and now it looks so lively and colorful. Was there any sign of that darkness or feel? And yes I know the original was just a movie style clip. But the atmosphere feel should be about the same.
My only concern as you said is the simplification of the combat. They can create some directional combos for melees and some "posture" styles for variety of attacks and animations. Idk if they have time for this but would be VERY nice for the game. Thats could make the difference between the final game score
Problem with that would be the input speed. How fast do you need to input that set of buttons to do said attack? Oni had a bit of this problem with some moves (most notably the throws) being inconsistent if I would do a throw or not
What is this game running on, an Xbox? It's really look very dated. I'm also not seeing that Obsidian charm. Hoping this isn't indicative what to expect with Outer Worlds 2.
Okay, I'll bite. I thought this game looked really good when they first showcased it, contrary to what others thought. I don't think I've ever played a game made by Obsidian before, so I'm excited to try this.
This game looks solid. Given when it is coming out I am sure I'll enjoy playing it when it is on sale after I finish KCD2, Monster Hunter, Hades 2 full release and probably Slay the Spire beta... and GTA6 if those games keep me busy until it releases. So yeah... looks like a great buy for like $10-$20 in 2026 or 2027, haha.
@@theluanvuong5886 I don't think Josh Sawyer is on the Avowed project, though, so it doesn't have all the same director influence. Hopefully it'll still be good, though.
I was worried about the skill trees. The fact that they have AI companions but Rangers don't get pets like in PoE feels pretty bad. The fact that they left out the MAJORITY of classes (Chanter, Monk, Barbarian, Cipher, Druid, Priest, Paladin) is awful, and the spell list for Wizards looks pretty bad too. What was that, two or three fire spells? I'm looking forward to this game, but I was hoping to play as a two-handed barbarian or a fire-themed wizard, but it genuinely doesn't look like I can play something as simple as that. Very disappointed.
Looks good. I'm hoping to see a bit more polish by the time it releases proper and I'm not a huge fan of the ui, but that's subjective. I'm also disappointed at the lack of customizable races. Seems like a strange exclusion, and it really restricts replayability.
I don't know for you guys but I've played Stalker 2 for 3 hours yesterday and didn't think it was pretty at all. I've jump down maybe 15 ft and died on the spot like a dog on easy setting. This game look visually a bit like that. Same stiffness ! Not impresses but if the gameplay fun I'm in
I love Obsidian, and I want to play this game, but I feel dizzy just watching your video. I hope the third-person view will be enough to fix my motion sickness.
I find the UI around the enemies with the damage numbers and the aiming process with the red arrow really an atmosphere killer, I would love to see a much less lighter UI, anyone else?
Just from the gameplay, it looks interesting. I haven’t noticed too many darker areas. The one thing I’ve been a little tired of lately is overly cartoony and colorful games. But other than that, this game looks pretty cool.
After watching this I think I'm actually excited. I like the idea that movement feels awesome instead of clumsy. Also, I love the balance of adventure over quests. These games that have millions of quests drives me nuts.....
So after playing outer worlds, obsidian lost their quality writing, that during their golden age made their games must plays, have they replaced that must play factor in awoved? Also how does this compare to tainted grail fall of avalone?
Man, this game just looks so disappointing. It's like even more streamlined Bethesda. I wish they'd have put the resources into making a PoE3 in the style of BG3 instead.
This looks like one of those games that will eventually go multiplatform to make more money. As the Microsoft president said a little while back they were not opposed to "exclusives" going to other consoles.
That art style is a hard sell for me. Also having so many chests to find and open really does kill any immersion when away from the uncanny valley NPCs
this is the one game I am excited about, bethesda at this point does not exist, from software won't fart another game for a while now and bioware..well..they not bioware no more, they are something different. In my adult life I have rearly thought about this, but..Do games suck? As an art form, as something that I thought was equal to film, to music..Games seem to suck. If obsidian do not save us, I don't know who will
Question: This has been hinted at before and shown for a split second here and there but - Any word on 3rd person navigation/combat? Also, any chance of playing as/using Cypher abilities?
Sounds like Fable & Chest are a good thing. Example exploring should have a reward besides just following your curiosity. If you Don't like what you found in a random chest could you sell it for profit, so you could Acquire something you do l have a interest in. Magic & Bows are great at Softening up targets, or if your looking for a stealth approach. would of been interesting if you could turn Enemies to attack each other then you could close in & Finish them off. The explore part does look like fun, scratch that Curiosity itch. Did any of the loot offer unique buffs or bonuses that would be beneficial in the game? Example reduce cool down on magic. add paralysis to your weapon. Is there a crafting system?
Not super worried about the performance cuz you're playing like two builds ago. I expect it'll be much smoother at launch. Out Worlds was good at launch and this isn't much bigger in scope. I want this now! Def my most hyped game of the winter.
Thank you for the video ! I have 2 questions but may be it s still too early to answer those : Is there any night/day cycle or will we be stuck in a frozen sunny noon with 5pm afternoon shadows then night time at camps ? Any weather system that could buff or de buff our character ? Thanks and Peace !
It looks really nice visually, yet underwhelming at the same time. This makes perfect sense, yet is hard to explain. The character models definitely look rigid and stiff. The environments look gorgeous. Hopefully it will run at 60+fps on decent systems when released.
I really don't mind the visual style of the game. The colorscheme is similar to that of the Pillars games, this is what I would feel a first person Pillars game would look like, so I don't understand people's response to it. My main character in Pillars was a wizard, so this works out great. Performance-wise.. that's something that can be improved, hopelly by release.
I’m curious what it is about the art style that turns you away? I wish you specified so maybe developers can take note in the future. I also never understood the fps discussion for these single player games. Other than these two things, I appreciate the insight- good video overall as always.
Glad I am not the only one who isn't a giant fan of the style of art they went for in this game. I really hope they also update the UI bars health, mana, etc. They look pretty awful.
The only subjective gripe I have is that the models do look plastic. Also, perhaps the lighting can add more darkness as things look too bright at times. But then I think this can be a nice substitute to Skyrim or just fill in the gap till we wait for ES6. I can also see some great modding potential here!

It looks like a game that modders can do wonders with. Right now, the spells look a little underwhelming, but let modders do their magic and I can see this being a game easily worth 100 hours plus.

Same.
True! In my case I love being flexible in fights and there is no more flexibility than specializing in magic + melee
I hate magic, I just use melee or ranged weapons. Don't like glowy effects and annoying magic sounds.

By capping the framerate to 50 fps and setting the screen to 100 Hz it still looked and felt pretty smooth but the PC quieted down quite a bit.
pro-tip: its an Xbox
@@Osoronnophris Nah, he clearly says he's playing on a PC.
This looks much better than the trailers
I'm sure it isn't dawg I'm sure they both suck lolz
😂😂
These are, consistently, some of the best reviews/previews I watch.
Not a fan of the art style either.
Bright and colorful works in a sarcastic way for sci-fi- it's beautiful, but alien beauty is dangerous.
In a fantasy setting, all those colors feel less dangerous and more whimsical.
I get it. Not a huge fan either.
it's just a realistic outdoor environment. there's nothing particularly "colorful" or "happy" about a generic green environment.
@@RyanCreatesThings right I agree, these people live in cities and are like it’s too green and forest whimsical it’s very bright blah blah
That hands/arms as you move...I just can't...
So excited for this. I’ve needed a good new open world game for a while now. A real shame this got delayed.
It's best to scrap it right away and forget about it
@@Thegoodsherman2 what don't you like about Avowed so far?
I can live with a cartoony high fantasy look, but all the highlighted UI elements together with the damage numbers and effects is too much for me
Great video, love your content. Does anyone else feel the graphics and animations look seriously outdated?
I just really hope there are some more movement skills to unlock in this game because just stepping around casting spells and swinging like Skyrim... I don't know if that's enough these days. Is there any kind of dodge, roll, parry, sidestep, or hover move or ANYTHING like that?
Also allot of enemies have tracking on their attacks so even if u dodge they track you abd still hit you. Lazy gane design.
Ohh this is looking way better then I thought it would have been... Thanks for the video.

@@soyborne.bornmadeandundone1342Have you played this game yet?
@@justalil4cylinder664 Nope. So there is a chance I will be wrong about some stuff and it might be better than I thought. That happened to me with silent hill 2 this year lol. But come on lol am I not allowed to take a look at previews and make a opinion? Thought that's what previews were for?!?!?! Doesn't look like it will be anywhere close to the level of sick games like breath of the wild, witcher 3, or elden ring that's all I'm sayin : )
No way will it get mass praise from me already though.
It might actually be one of the best games ever made!"
I get your point but do you get mine? lol I think there needs to be a middle ground is all.
Wtf.. You're kidding us.
That's absolute crap..
Cautiously optimistic. Thanks for the honest reaction Fex.
Looks great. Not sure what you mean by the Art Style, it looks bright and colorful like the Outerworlds. That seems pretty on brand for Obsidian.
I love it! Not a fan of dark flat colors and depressing environments.
Good analysis, thank you 🌞🌞
obsidian games with there choices are still honestly the best in the business, nice to see this game seems to carry on that trait.
I'm loving this and look forward to jumping back into the world of Eora
I love a good sword and sorcery game that lets me escape the modern world and immerse myself in a deeply-imagined fantasy universe. If that's what Avowed has to offer, I'm in.
Prepare for modern real world politics. I would be surprised, if this game didnt have them.
@@Oozaru85 As long as it's not done to excess, or in a ham-fisted way, or in a way that breaks immersion or rides roughshod over player choice, I can put up with it. I don't like it, but I will still be able to enjoy the game.
Very glad to hear there is more of an emphasis on exploration and combat than dialogue.
Pretty interesting contrast between yours and MrMattyPlays' review, where he kinda stated that there were tons of conversation and dialogue that he was experiencing. Maybe you were doing too much exploration proportionally to interacting with NPC's and quests?
Maybe buy thats why you watch multiple reviews. Better thought process than most of the commenters. Good job
It could also be an expectations thing, which is fine too.
Looks great and super keen to play it!
The original reveal CGI trailer likely had little to no input from obsidian themselves
Can’t wait to play it. Wasn’t sold at first but all the good reviews seem to indicate a decent 7.5-8/10. I’m in.
This style looks rough and the UI is kinda gross
My only concern as you said is the simplification of the combat. They can create some directional combos for melees and some "posture" styles for variety of attacks and animations. Idk if they have time for this but would be VERY nice for the game. Thats could make the difference between the final game score
Problem with that would be the input speed. How fast do you need to input that set of buttons to do said attack? Oni had a bit of this problem with some moves (most notably the throws) being inconsistent if I would do a throw or not
What is this game running on, an Xbox? It's really look very dated.
I'm also not seeing that Obsidian charm.

The fact that they left out the MAJORITY of classes (Chanter, Monk, Barbarian, Cipher, Druid, Priest, Paladin) is awful, and the spell list for Wizards looks pretty bad too. What was that, two or three fire spells?

Other than these two things, I appreciate the insight- good video overall as always.
you don't really need to elaborate, it is an opinion of "I like the way this looks" or not...
Glad I am not the only one who isn't a giant fan of the style of art they went for in this game. I really hope they also update the UI bars health, mana, etc. They look pretty awful.
To me, this seems like a game I'd pick up on a sale if it's 15 quid or less. Definitely not a day 1 purchase.
No review code for you :P
But i like your take on it, it felt honest at least.
The only subjective gripe I have is that the models do look plastic. Also, perhaps the lighting can add more darkness as things look too bright at times. But then I think this can be a nice substitute to Skyrim or just fill in the gap till we wait for ES6.
I can also see some great modding potential here!
Uncanny valley maybe?
Glad you are positive about it. I prefer Nature Godlike so I'm fine with no race choice.
Also like the Druid. Hopefully can make a fun spellsword.
