The song "La Llorona" has nothing to do with the ghost legend of "La Llorona". The only thing they have in similarities are their names. The original song and melody was made by an indigenous group in pre-Columbian Oaxaca. I believe the original meaning of the song was about a man singing to death, who he referred to as La Llorona. But the song became popular again during the Mexican Revolution of 1910, which was when the majority of the verses were composed. With the new verses, the song meaning then changed to a dead soldier singing to his grieving wife.

The song is about a guy who leaves his wife or girlfriend to go to war (The revolution). Her wife cried a lot because she knew she won’t ever see him again, but he promised to his llorona (weeping woman= a affectionate way from him to call her wife) that he will come back and that death won’t separate him from her. So he leaves but never came back.. Some months later a friend from the couple came back and told his wife her husband was shot down in battle.. then he gave a letter for her from her husband..In the letter he wrote about the first time he saw her and referring her in this letter like his llorona ❤️ ...some parts of the letter is in the song and the song got really famous especially during the revolution.

Llorona means the weeping lady
The song is about a guy who leaves his wife or girlfriend to go to war (The revolution). Her wife cried a lot because she knew she won’t ever see him again, but he promised to his llorona (weeping woman= a affectionate way from him to call her wife) that he will come back and that death won’t separate him from her. So he leaves but never came back.. Some months later a friend from the couple came back and told his wife her husband was shot down in battle.. then he gave a letter for her from her husband..In the letter he wrote about the first time he saw her and referring her in this letter like his llorona ❤️ ...some parts of the letter is in the song and the song got really famous especially during the revolution.

Please Don’t confuse this beautiful song with the legend of the llorona., these are two different stories. This song is from Oaxaca and it’s base in the letters and poems sent to his girlfriend, when the couple get separated by the revolutionary war in Mexico. Unfortunately he gets kill, so she looses her mind when she founds out he died and is not coming back, as he promised. So for eternity she’ll wait for him.

That's the wrong llorona. This song is about the love of a man for the woman he loves. They meet, fall in love and he soon leaves for war, the Mexican revolutionary War and she can't stop crying for him. He calls her llorona as a term of endearment. She knows she'll never see him again. He dies in war. His best friend finds her to tell her that he only spoke of his love for her, that he would airways love her, before his death.
