- Got an old shed that you need to take down? Here are a carpenter's tips on how to remove the old shed DIY style and stay safe and save money. As a shed builder, no two sheds seem to be the same, so I take you through some of the oddball stuff, tools, and techniques.
Note to HGTV watchers: No sledgehammers. I don't know why that's on TV, but it shouldn't be on TV. Saddle up. How to remove an old shed.

I’m laughed several times at this video but I guess the world is full of people that need to be reminded not to just walk off the end of the roof or let the roof collapse on top of them. And yes demo is fun! But the thing I liked best about the video is there was no finessing it. Just cut it up into the biggest pieces you can manage safely. No little hammer and pry bar like most of the demo videos on YT. You sir know how to get the job done.

Loved the video. I'm a young water damage technician and I was sent to PEI for hurricane clean up I usually just work in basements but I have multiple large demos coming up and I definitely appreciate the video giving me an idea of how to approach this
Yeah, buddy (Love your screen name by the way). You've got some hard work ahead of you. - My rules for structural demo include: Take it apart in the reverse order it was put together, cut as many connections (nails) as you can with reciprocating saw (get lots of demo blades), chainsaws and sledgehammers have their places, but I use both rarely, if it look like it might fall down or get away from you have an exit path and plan. - Good luck. Love to see what you're up against.
You're so right, I pack trucks and twice in 20 years Ive walked off the back of a truck, I have learned my lesson, situation awareness...
Situational awareness applies to everything, not just dangerous stuff. I've learned a lot about life building things.

I could tell you a story about where that energy came from...a seminar I was in once that -- to this day -- was the best sleeping pill I could imagine. zzzzzzzz
This man is so entertaining and knowledgeable it didn't make me want to do it myself it made me want to hire him to do it.. 😂.. I got a 10x20 shed and a ankle that took 7 months to heal till I got back to work.. I'm not too sure walking around the roof of a shed with a saw would be a good idea for me.. but maybe hiring somebody would be. I just hope they're half as good as this guy.. he made a big job look easy.. not to mention the right tool for the right job could run into some money. Especially if they're tools that I may never use again unless I'm getting ready to tear down my next shed.. this was a great video and gave me a few things to think about

You bet. - I do this kind of thing all the time, so the gears are greased. I'd say I had this on the ground and in the dump truck in 4-ish hours. - If you're just tooling up, I'd give it 6-8 hours to get it on the ground and maybe another 2-hours to load it wherever it goes.

I tried using my sawzall yesterday. I have a Dewalt but not enough batteries. So I tried my hyper tough corded and the damn thing was falling apart, literally, the casing kept sliding off somehow. And it's not that strong. I do have a skill saw too so I'm gonna try that tomorrow on the other sheds(got 3 total for this job)

We try. It's not easy. It's not easy and the load and carry of materials out to the front yard is no joke.
Neighbor gets locked out of his back door and after he gets inside they both stare at you through the window while you talk to a camera 🤣. I totally would've been those neighbors lol. "Hey babe, come check this out, the neighbors hired a guy to take down their shed and he's out there talking to himself. You think he's OK? I'm gonna go ask him if he needs some help with that, if he's not crazy I'll give you the signal and then you bring us out a couple of those Mike's from the fridge would ya please?"

Good video. However I was looking how to take one apart to relocate.
That's a different project. I suppose it's possible but the likelihood you'll damage something is high. - I'd be sure to have a lot of demo blades for the recip saw. Cut as many nails as you can.
The 4X4s under the shed are skids for towing the shed to and fro.

Cost depends on a number of functions. Accessibility to the shed, egress through gates or flower beds, and shed size. - I charge a day rate for labor, an equipment fee for my dump truck and other equipment. - I never give an estimate unless I can se e the project. - I do shed removal and shed building in Montgomery County, PA
I know you were worried about small yard, neighbors fence, but once that roof down why are you still cutting. That little thing and a sledge is all you need unless you have a tiny dumpster or you like playing with tools. That whole thing with two guys should take 2 to 3 hours with filling up trailer or dumpster.
It's been a while, but it was all day (there is shit under sheds) to get it onto my dump truck. Another 2-hours to dump it plus dump fee.

How much did you charge for something like this?
Good question. There are a lot of variables. And, this was part of a larger project. - What I can tell you is what the inputs were: I own a dump truck that took all this to the dump. The dump charges $120/ton and I need to mark that up. Then there's the labor for taking it down and not killing yourself. And then there is selling a service customers can afford. - I think the line item on this one was somewhere around $1,750.

I'm about $1,500 on this one. No dumpster or Bagsters or trailer hauling. I have a dump truck I use for this that requires a line item.

Not sure why you’d go on a roof of a shed that needs to be demoed most times there not in wonderful condition. No reason to go on the roof. Throwing hazard, material and black bags and throwing in the trash. Definitely proper way to dispose of it. Lol.

Maybe you guys should volunteer to go around carefully deconstructing peoples' sheds, etc. and storing the unique and specific sized pieces for them in case they need a scrap piece of 2x4 or something.
There are people who either don't want to or have the ability/tools necessary to demo an outbuilding themselves so they hire it out, most likely to a contractor who is going to be building them a new or bigger one. Its always obvious from comments like these that come from people who don't realize what it would take to "salvage" all the cheap lumber from an old shed, therefore don't realize how unprofitable it would be to be paying said contractor to waste time doing it. A decent door or windows....sure, but not 2x4's and $10/sheet OSB,etc.
I get it, but also no. It was good fire wood, yes. Buildable items, prolly not.
Civilization starts and ends at the dump.
I prefer using a chainsaw.
I've tried a chainsaw on a deck re-skin and it devoured wood, but the rooster tail of dust was crap. Cutting asphalt and nails will cripple a chain fast. No go for me.
