I lived in Costa Rica for a couple years and even people that had very little (dirt floors) would make sure one member of the family was always home (they’d take turns). Those who didn’t have to “guard” their property had the bars on every window, locks on doors, and broken glass on the top of the cement wall. This was in every area I lived - rural, in towns and cities. I think you should always take precautions no matter what.

Divide & Conquer! Louis can go now and record his activities while Raya can tape what she's doing with the baby, groups she may join, etc. Once the bus is sealed up you have a list of what's needed and/or if you can even live there again. It's best to know sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the less likely it is that you'll be able to salvage it.

You two have had several, shall we say challenges, since I started following you -- working on the Big Bus since it was parked and used very little for awhile; Louis’ converting the littler camper-van motor to run on electricity and then driving ‘cross country’ to arrive out East in time for Neos birth. And now this burglary in Costa Rico! My goodness, what a heck of a time for all of this to be happening, and just as your firstborn is still a newborn❣️. And you’re handling all of it with grace and tenacity. I find you two inspiring, even in my right old age of 70.

So sorry you’ve had this happen to you. Rule of thumbnis to never leave important thing anywhere you will not be for long periods of time. People know its “vacant” and can take their time going through. As much as the feeling of violation, remember the people going through your stuff don’t know you. They are not connecting the goods to belonging to anyone but themselves. We too have been robbed, 3 times at a cottage, and once in our home while we slept. It takes time but you find ways to feel safe again.

We have other land in Costa Rica with a small house on it, and if no one is in it the jungle and people take it over. So tough the timing! Well wishes with that process. So sorry to hear about the robbing! Unfortunately it’s very common in Costa Rica when property is left unattended for longer periods of time. I’m curious, why didn’t you give birth in Costa Rica? I had my baby there 9 months ago, and it was the best experience. My daughter automatically became a citizen, and I can now get permanent residency through my baby. Her Costa Rican passport was ready at 3 weeks old, her US passport came at 6 weeks old.

I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you! I can definitely relate to this feeling of your home being violated. I have been burglarized twice, one attempted home invasion, and once robbed at gunpoint (in St. Lucia in broad daylight). The attempted home invasion was the worst - while I was in grad school living in FL. 2am - I was awake and all of the lights were on and someone tried to come in my bedroom window and then the back door. Everyone, please make sure your doors and windows are always locked. He left (thankfully) just a few minutes before the police arrived (I had called 911). This was the first night that my roommate and her dog had been out of town (she had a truck that was normally parked outside so I don't think this was a coincidence). I don't want to know what could have happened if he had gotten in....

So sorry, but it's not surprising. There's people working on the property who don't stay there, they see the bus parked for months and no one is going in and out of it. Sadly that's a high possibility to happen. Even when you move there and build a house, it will possibly still happen, when you live there half the year and not live there for the other half, people notice these things and will target your property

I am so sorry your bus has been burgled. I was so surprised to learn the valuables that were left on it though. Sometimes it feels like your vision may be too idealistic of this world of frolicking happy children in the community of luxury and abundance. Sadly, this utopian village full of grand design modernist houses is in reality only highlighting the void of difference between those who have and the locals who have not. Some on CR will be struggling for basic needs to be met, to have a roof over their heads and to feed their children or even have the tools to be able to work. For them to see apparently wealthy folk who can afford to buy plots of land, expensive vehicles and electrical items and leave them unattended for so long, temptation would be enormous. I am sorry this has happened but sadly, life isn’t as comfortable and perfect as we would wish. I hope your dreams come true for you but please make future decisions about CR with your heads as well as your hearts. 🫣

A similar thing happened to us in Sweden. We left the van for 30 mins mid day at a car park in the middle of the city. When we came back everything was thrown all over the place and all of our valuables were gone. Our clothes, everything. We also lost hard drives with memories on it. It was very hard for me especially. My husband is more like Louis and gets over things quickly. I developed an anxiety problem. But in the end I learned a lot from it. What's really important is that you guys are safe. All the material stuff is replaceable. It's annoying, but manageable. Everything is going to be fine:)

Can you maybe rent the bus out as an airbnb? That way it won't be unoccupied, but then you have the problem of dealing with renters. Maybe on a positive note, the e-bike batteries and other tech gadgets might have gotten damage from sitting in the bus for so long and now you'll have an excuse to get newer ones that are less prone to fires and more efficient?

Hi guys, ❤ some advice About Costa Rica...
Sadly those problems are really common in all of Latin America.🫤😣😢
So you'll need to somehow improve the security arrangements within the community,
As well as in your construction. So it doesn't happen again.
Also to keep an eye on your property during the time of your absence I'll recommend you:
Find someone you pay to visit the property frequently and make the maintenance.
It helps to keep the place safe.😅
And also 🤓 get an insurance *for all* your things there !!
So you get covered in any situation.
    Wish you the best❤🪷🤗

Sorry to hear about the robbery. Where I am from, the homeless steal from “virgins”. It makes absolutely no sense, but I believe it is mental health related. People who usually do malicious things to others are deemed as ‘soul runners’. It’s unfortunate to know it reached something that was apart of both your personal and spiritual journey (that you both built over time). It’s really a sad thing ppl can do such things. I have had things stolen many times over (it’s just a way for others to try to defile a good thing to validate wicked plotting). I hope you all have a better situation. Usually when one ugly setback happens, in some karmic way you will receive something even better. Praying you all have a good future. It is wonderful hearing about a diverse community of ppl you all connect with.

    Hey Raya and Louis
I really think you should consider just building two bedrooms in your outdoor space , it won't take that much more effort to put up a basic structure like that.
It will be alot more comfortable.
As Louis can't stand full upright in the Bus, it may make better sense to live outside of the bus thus also giving longer term advantages.
I have watched your previous videos and seen the issues of the mould and so on .
For security reasons as well, it may be better to be in a brick building.
If you keep the bus with the amenities you can still use it to travel as well.
I would say instead of putting more money in the Bus, use it for a little bedroom structure and keep the bus as lounge area .

I wish you the best but if I may give some advise, considering all the renovations you have to do and all the possible things you have to fix, and jow Raya feels about living in a space that has been ransacked by someone else.......... I'd say the best bet is to sell the bus. You will be investing huge amounts of money in a place that was already ransacked by someone else AND in the end, the cost might be the same or even more than buying a new one.
You can even use the money from the bus to start investing in the land.
    Best of Luck and Hugs!

When I read the title of your vlog, I was fearful you were robbed (in person under force and threat) thankfully that did not occur. The crime you experienced though, feels like such an invasion of your personal space. ....it feels terrible, not just because of the monetary loss as well. Knowing that someone was in that space which is your sanctuary. This type of crime is an opportunistic one, the people who did this probably were checking out the location, noting whether a lot of folks were around and picking a time when they wouldn't be caught. Sorry you experienced this be safe in all your adventures ...love your vlogs and your spirits.

I had a break-in in my rental car near Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica when the window was smashed and all our luggage was stolen. Unfortunately it's common in Costa Rica and its a horrible feeling that lasts a long time.

How tragic..totally ransacked. I was robbed in my very first apt in the late 70’s ( they took my moms wedding ring she had just given me 😢)
and I also had a car stolen in the 90’s ,you never forget that feeling of devastation and violation. Uggh So sorry this happened😢

Being the victim of a robbery is painful. I once caught my neighbor breaking into my car and trying to steal my car radio.
Knowing that someone who didnt have permission to be in my car made me feel so violated. Im sorry your going through this.

I am sad to hear that your bus was turned upside down. As a South American, I must say that, to leave expensive stuff in the bus was not very wise. Many people from other countries keep making this mistake. Sadly many people in that part of the world are living in survival mode and will do whatever they can to get money. One of the best known rules when being in that part of the world is, to never leave expensive things in places that are easy to break into, sometimes even do not walk around with expensive cameras. I was taught as a little girl, to be very aware of my environment, not to be in fear but be aware of my surroundings, take the precautions need it. Sad but a true reality.

Hola familia, I’m from Puntarenas (super close to Orotina) and I just want u guys to take good care, it will be nice if there is a guard looking out for the properties because as u said there’re mostly empty, it’s almost necessary to have vigilance. Every opportunity that u let open to thiefs there is indeed a high chance to happen. So yeah , sending you all the love, if there is some way I can help or you need information of something I’m here to help🧡

I've lived here for the last 3 years. We were scammed by a contractor, now we only work with very trusted workers. Our small tico home with gate/fence, window bars was broken into while we left for just a few hours. And then just going to a small rural fruit stand, our car was broken into and wallet taken. All three in 3 different pretty rural areas. It's so sad, people are desperate lately.

This is so sad to hear, I hope you can replace things and feel safe again. Just a heads up, in case you want to change the title, you were burgled, not robbed. Robbery is burglary with violence, while you are there, so quite a different situation.
