  • In today's video, we (slightly) upgrade our solar equipment but still have lots of questions. Complete some gravel work in the driveway with footage that I thought I lost last week (found it!), and Julie and I take a short trip to Hope, Alaska.

    So much fun watching the both of you settling in. Filling in the holes and doing what normal people do every day.
    And doing it with smiles and being able to enjoy your environment. See you next week. 🙂

    Hey just a suggestion but that old junky RV that you got there you can take the Box off of it and use the frame as a flatbed trailer and it'll work and it doesn't cost you anything to buy a new flatbed trailer

    • @1onelyone
      @1onelyone 13 дней назад +2

      Came here to say that. I did the same with a boat trailer and an old broken down RV. A comparable price for a used trailer, the size of the RV frame, was around $4,500-5,000.

    Hi, you definitely need a larger solar system. When you upgrade, please go with a 48V system. LIFEPO4 batteries will last a long time but are a huge upfront investment. Good luck 😄😄

    Can you insulate the house side of the generator building and perhaps the roof too? Doing so might help with noise, especially if it's spray insulation.

    You can get a solar pump for your well and get it off of the rest of your solar.

    Regarding power.there are newer pump options and regulate usage on need,glass of water uses less than watering the lawn etc worth researching yes cost upfront but excellent long term return

    • @OffGridInAlaska
      @OffGridInAlaska  12 дней назад

      No. There are very few cars on this road and everyone around here drives very slow due to the gravel and dirt roads. We would not let her run around if there were more cars. 😊

      We installed it in series parallel. We were told that's what it's called.

    • @prof1982
      @prof1982 12 дней назад

      @@OffGridInAlaska has to be one or the other ,one is all positives linked together and all negatives linked together resulting in no voltage increase (parallel).the other is positive to negative connection increasing the voltage by the given battery power each time ,is if for instance you link 4 12v batteries you end up with 48v .(series)

    Trying to run a house on a 12v system isn’t very efficient. A 48v system draws one quarter the current which is means less internal resistance from the battery itself. When your pump is drawing 136 amperes the battery itself becomes a load also. I’ve been running a 4K 48v inverter at our remote cabin for about 20 years. On sunny days we can do 4 loads of wash without running the generator. I worked on these systems for many years doing telecom work.

      Yes, definitely switch over to a 48V system. Not sure what your shipping situation is, But Solar Signature sells everything you would need, Inverters/panels and some of the best 48v rack batteries on the market today at reasonable prices. Good Luck!

    I'd remove that entire deisal ran generator from that shed, and either get rid of it or keep it fir extreme emergencies, but take it and set it back a good 1/4 mile away from the house and run a trenched line underground fir external lines, and you won't have that disgusting exhaust smell. You're getting solar anyway so, put that attached shed to much better use and relocate that old deisal powered one away from the house, no smell, no loud noise.

    I noticed on the drive to the gravel yard it looked like power lines near the road. Is grid tied electric close enough to your home that you could connect to it if you want to?

    • @OffGridInAlaska
      @OffGridInAlaska  9 дней назад +1

      It actually is not that far to connect to power but the utility company told us it would be about $80,000 to connect

    • @gary-gilbert
      @gary-gilbert 9 дней назад

      @@OffGridInAlaska That’s crazy expensive. Public utilities should be affordable to the public. It cost me $117 to connect to Kentucky power. And it wouldn’t have cost that much except I wanted under ground service instead of aerial service and I had to pay the difference in wire price.

    It might be an idea for you to put your water pump on a separate system then your house. A smaller system with separate panels and equipment etc. Another idea would be that when you decide which new system you plan to use for the house and install it, use the system you have now just for your water pump.
