I agree. Unlike Soma, who has raw talent and complete confidence in his skill, Megumi is a more developed character. She began as a timid, frightened girl with unrealized potential. After all the heartache, self-doubt, and ridicule from her peers, she overcame every obstacle to climb to the top. She is my favorite character as well.

But after all that hard work and the “food battles” which were preparing soma for shokugekis in the future shows all the hard work soma has done in order to keep up with the “geniuses”

Megumi is one of the best parts if not the best part of this anime. she rises from her lowest point thanks to being inspired by Soma, and she honestly is a VERY capable chef. plus she is just adorable to me at times
She got a standing ovation after her match with Ryo. After everyone who brushed her aside and thought she wasn't fit to be at Totsuki. She garnered so much praise and adoration... she doesn't know how talented she really is.

Kinda like a guy/girl in college who doesn't want to fail and tell his/her parents that she could not make it through because she just could not keep up with the pace. Being away from home and on your own can be pretty tough though at times. Genuinely thanks to Soma and her hard work she got better and she continues to impress even now in the manga.
From her backstory, it felt like she was loved my her entire village/city. She was cooking to serve those she loved. At Tootsuki, it's a complete different environment where everyone is treated as stepping stone to progress and that's something she struggles with and probably the reason why she's so terrified all the time.

Now bear in mind, Favorite Child Syndrome is more readily identified and associated in families with siblings.* See typically, firstborn children are the unspoken 'favorite' like for example Takumi. They have all this pressure to be an example for all the younger siblings and also be the successful one: perfect grades, lots of extracurriculars, everything has to be perfect. Takumi is canonically bad at /everything/ except cooking and Isami can't beat Takumi at this one thing that seems to matter the most to their family; and because they have a family restaurant, Takumi is automatically the favored child because of his culinary prowess. It puts an unnecessary amount of pressure on him. Plus it also doesn't help that he's the more "eye catching" of the two and that he seems to have a more "sophisticated" approach. Isami would probably be bullied a lot and as the older twin and family favorite, he has to protect Isami. It's worth noting that this effects others around the person.. for example, Isami is prone to jealousy and is often looked down on. He likely suffers from an eating disorder and self hate because he wants his family to see him as equal, that he's just as good as his brother. this also shows when he says he doesn't want to be a burden on his brother.. he wants to be able to do something that makes him just as good but without having to lean on his brother and add to his problems. He masks with his smile and such but that doesn't mean he doesn't care.. it effects both of them because Takumi, in some cases, is able to turn what would be considered a hellish problem into his greatest strength. It's his greatest strength and his Achilles heel. *Now imagine /that/ on an only child...* Favorite child syndrome effects only children too because they don't have siblings! Instead they're either loved or hated by the family or in Megumi's case? Her family and town. She's an only child so it's considerably worse for her. Seriously folks; she's the town favorite and an only child.. To a single mom who is head of a successful inn. The fact the entire town loves her as the favorite and has high hopes for her? Saying she's probably the biggest fish to come out of their small town? Yeah that sure as hell doesn't help her. Geez... Also, Erina herself stated that Megumi could have also presented a perfect 100 point dish just like Momo, but it was fighting style, that strong drive to be better than her former self made her to sacrifice a perfect 100 point dish at a chance of achieving a higher 120 point dish. That drive and willingness to go against conformity and standard perfection is what made Momo so angry after their battle. So therefore in theory, Megumi could have easily stalemated Momo during their battle, but Megumi was aiming for victory, sadly she miscalculated. But still, stealing a point against the best pastry chef in Totsuki in a battle of desserts is a very impressive feat on its own.
My ideal outcome: Erina wins Souma, they start a restaurant together or something. Megumi goes on to start several gourmet restaurants in a chain branded under her own name, a la Gordon Ramsay. Megumi comes to own the world of cuisine and becomes the biggest culinary name to bless this earth.
