They say an F-16 requires like 17 hour maintenance per hour of flight. And flying jets aint like going horseback riding once a month, youve gotta do it regularly to keep sharp.
I remember somewhere a documentary saying it costs the tax payers almost 10,000$ per hour to fly the average jet. If I remember right. It was just in fuel. To think most trained pilots in the military have thousands of hours makes me cringe when they want to fine me for have a 300,000 mile car and my catalytic converter is just out of the threshold of being earth saving. 🎉

The L39 was literally designed to be the lowest cost maintenance trainer ever. I forgot how many hours but annually the maintenance is only like 12,000$, and parts are super readily available, that’s the reason they’re most popular
When I was a line mechanic I ran across 2 Russian fighter trainers. A YAK-53 and an L-39. The dude is right though about the maintenance on even on general aviation aircraft. The maintenance is what is ends up costing you.
Yeah my dad used to buy F-4 Phantoms and some other stuff they were de-commissioning for the engines back in I think the 80-90s? You can buy it and sell it back to different parts of the government.
Some of my family used to live near a community in the mountains where everyone has their own plane. One of the guys was a surgeon and owned an old jet. He had a pilot that flew him to and from work every day.
Jeremy Clarkson bought an English Electric Lightning which was an interceptor designed specifically to intercept Russian TU-22, TU-16 and TU-95’s and was in service until 1988 and just parked it on his lawn until the neighbours complained and he had to have it removed (though I can’t remember if he did it as a “bit” for a tv show or if it was genuinely something he did)
Ex boss of mine owns UK domestic airline. He loves old planes, he owns 1 of the 2 publicly owned Spitfires in the UK which are still operational and flight worthy
In order for a pilot to fly a jet, you need a type rating, and in order to have a type rating you need to have at least 1000hr of logged flight time (in the US)
The f 16 is around $7,000 a flight hour. Also nothing aviation is cheap. As a prior aircraft maintenance guy in the military i would look and the parts log to see what was ordered and it was very common to see 6 figure prices for parts. I saw one for $790,000. I just remembered thinking some E6 walked up and was like i need an new transmitter. 5 minutes later he just had Uncle Sam swipe for what could buy a very nice house in most places.
