Stacey Dooley is living in a convent to explore the lives of the nuns and to see how they strive for a contented, meaningful existence. She speaks to Linda, who left behind her career as an occupational therapist nearly 40 years ago, handing over her life savings in the process in order to embrace a more frugal and communal way of living.

Oh my gosh, I remember Linda when I was working at York Minster! She worked many of the services and still does I imagine. Very gentle soul!
Stacy Dooley is beyond fabulous.
I love her courage and her ability to engage in open dialogue with others. Stacy has a kind heart.
Stacy is incandescent.
I really love Stacey's documentaries, she always chooses interesting subjects and is so non-judgemental, kind, empathetic and genuine what's to learn about people's lives or issues she's investigating. Looking forward to the next documentary Stacey! ❤️
I've just watched this programme and Stacey is a really interesting reporter. I really enjoy her programmes and tonight's programme was really settling and peaceful. I really enjoyed listening about the nuns lives and Stacey's too.
I concur with your sentiment 100%

Lol.....I'm just up to that bit on IPlayer and now I'll not be able to unsee Brian Cox when I continue watching it, lol.
Thanks for this BBC
AMAZING LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE. JUST WOWWW
That's so sad that the nun can't go buy a book. I wonder if she can go to the library?
heartwarming
This lovely nun had 150 books beforehand....that's one of the reasons I could never become a nun because I've got hundreds of books and could never give them up!

It's not on RUclips, but the episode is on BBC Iplayer
But the Vatican can live as lavishly as they’d like
What has the Vatican anything to do with this? She is an Anglican nun.
@@antoniousai1989 Ok, so Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II is the “pope” of the Anglican church… And Lambeth Palace is the official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Lambeth Palace is kinda grand.
@@dahemac She isn't the pope of the Anglican church. It is ridiculous to suggest that all in the church need to take vows of poverty.
@@thyikmnnnn Look, things up.

@@dahemac yep very different from a 'Pope'.

Dope stuff
Amazing how the church keeps all the money its given though isn't it?
Yeah
But it doesn't.
Like a mosque then
Except it doesn’t, looking in from the outside it may seem that way. When you look at levels of community investment into things like children’s work, debt help, food banks etc the church is way way ahead of any other sector of society. There’s a concept that’s central to Christianity called sacrificial giving. The idea that it’s part of your faith to do without things you’d like so others less fortunate than you can have. Outsiders will never usually see this aspect of churches because the objective is to get on & help people, not make a noise about it.
it only shows you have zero knowledge of religious life
Eu oro todos os dias para que uma música nossa estoura 🙏🏼🎼 eu tenho fé, e sei que um dia vai chegar o dia 😭🙏🏼🍀🙏🏽…
Prayers are utterly useless.
Money is a concern for the Carmelite nun's, but only for the Mother Superior.
She will be tasked with getting novitiate nun's to the community and their possible financial aid that they can give up on their behalf to the purpose of convent and their own sisters.
Didnt know James Blunt was a Nun called Linda
these people are completely unworldly, they have used their collective power to impact the world in a good way, they cater for their basic needs but everything is devotion to the cause.
£75 a year …. Sacrifice … unity … spirit of poverty ❤
Hi
Interesting
Thoughts on money…
Pondering…
Money = options.
That’s all you get..
Now what are you gonna do?

She'd be able to walk around her hometown in peace if wearing the that particular garb rather than being pestered by fundamentalists the last time she tried
My friend became a nun by accident. She was supposed to be going on a hen party to Alicante and filled in the wrong form at passport control. She didn't even realise for a week because, as she said "we were supposed to be doing a themed escape room and meditation retreat so it all made sense at first." Anyway, she decided to stay there and is now know as Sister Extravaganza.
It must be like living in a small communist community. There's a freedom and a restriction either way. it's a trade off. I think id like the minimalism of it for a week then I'd want my choices and comforts back.
Religious dogma and bs aside, if they are happy and fulfilled and have purpose who are we to Jude?
"We" are the ones paying their bills while they don't even pay taxes. When someone pays for you to live they own the right to judge all they like.
@@NOMADdaf well clearly the nuns get nothing. Your issue is with the church not the people who work for them, who believe they are doing good. The least they can have is their basic needs met. If they decide to sacrifice everything and all earthly pleasures in some belief to bring about peace or whatever it is that nuns do "WE" should put ourselves in their shoes and "WE" should have compassion for those who have less.
Whether they are misguided or not, they have made a choice to forgo a certain lifestyle in the believe that it will bring them closer to god and believe that it will be a good thing for "US" all.
as long as they arnt those scary catholic nuns who run on shame and splintered rulers, who cares?
Let her not eat cake or have a new book or sleep will one pillow. If that brings her joy and she's not harming anyone who cares if "WE" have to pay her lecky bill? it works out as pennies when "WE" share it all out.
Now that fat cat soulless priests at the top who horde all the money and does god knows what with it, thats another story.
What goes through the mind of people who decide one day that they never want to have horizontal refreshment?
Whats that mean? Sex? Lol

I would love to be a nun, I have for a long time, but that was not in godsplan.i
They never admit that they are in fact living off of other people that don't have this attitude. With out taking money from people that do have, they would be destitute, living in squaller. It's easy to be pious when someone else is paying your bills.
squalor, not "squaller" hahaha But yes i do agree with the rest of your point honestly
Yep the majority of people have most of their earnings going to housing and food anyway
No wimple??
Lots of Modern Coventry don't require wimples
*WOW, this is the textbook definition of a cult.*
They tell you money is a negative thing..... as a way to get you to give them all your money and become their indentured servant.
hahahaahahaha protestant materialistic heretic
Sounds like slavery.
No. Slavery is imposed by others. This is chosen, totally voluntarily, after much deliberation. Nobody just shows up at a convent and joins that day, discernment is a long process, candidacy and postulancy is a long process, novitiate is a long process, simple (preliminary) vows are several years' duration, and at any time in all this process, you can change your mind and leave, and get back your property. Or, you may be asked to leave. Not everyone is cut out for this and they won't take you if there are clear signs that this isn't right for you for the long haul.
True slavery is no freedom to choose, these are consecrated people freely following their calling. True slavery is those who are controlled by money, power, social media, secularism etc. like people are addicted to phone or drugs… these are real slavery!
@S A If you say so?? It still sounds like slavery. And I find it odd that none of them ever stood up for all of those children. They just turned a blind eye. Was that part of their faith too?

It's amazing the amount of people that are brainwashed with religious beliefs....
You will be surprised that they are highly educated people with degrees or diploma. It’s a way of living, and a choice they made. Like Mother Teresa, they dedicated their lives for others. Do you think Mother Teresa was brainwashed by religious beliefs?
I agree, but by the same token, are we not also brainwashed?. To look a certain way, to be classed as successful, to be classed as a failure if you fall down on any of those things. To find a partner and produce children whether or not deep down it's what we truly want? We are all brainwashed. It's starts with parents putting their ideals upon us, then school, then employers, the government ad infinitum to death. It's just which school of thought you choose.
