I have adhd so it’s hard for me to sit through a movie for more than thirty minutes before getting bored and moving on, i’ve been getting better at not doing that lately but this movie had me focused the entire time. I don’t know why I didn’t watch it earlier I just kept blowing it off until last night when I decided I wasn’t going to keep stalling. This movie doesn’t have a single boring moment, the musical cues are almost always perfect, and no matter how many times you watch or rewatch it you’ll always find something or some meaning that’s new.
this is my favorite scene of the movie so far, it totally blew my mind the first time I saw it. it makes me feel really sad but at the same time I was mesmerized

I've watched a lot of Anime, and there are only two I've seen where the language mattered. 1. Pokemon. Ash has an annoying, raspy voice in English. 2. Samurai Champloo. Gene's Japanese voice doesn't quite hit the "reverant samurai" note. I see nothing wrong with Paprika's vocal cast in English/Japanese.

First, you should take not that comic books and graphic novels are not the same thing. There are significant differances in art style, length, paper quality, and size. The term "comic book" is right out. - What distinguishes a Manga from a graphic novel, it is the strong Japanese influance on art style. - In the same way, an Anime is not just a cartoon because Anime, regardless of its country of origin, carries strong Japanese influences - setting it apart from the averge cartoon.

But, were a Western style cartoon created in Japan with no cultural influence, it would, at least by literal definition, be "Anime." However, unless you're in Japan speaking Japanese, it would still be called a cartoon in English based on style.

@darkcylander I took a year’s worth of animation classes in college. When anime was created it was an attempt to mimic Disney. A cost cutting measure, where they tried to mimic the cute rounded look of their early cartoons, exploit their economically friendly animation loops, layered segmented joints and a variety of other things. It wasn't out to start a new art style, it just evolved into one. It was a failed clone, that was considered a cheaper alt in the 80's that sadly has caught on.

Well, English voice actors many times lack the direction that their Japanese counterparts got (there are few exceptions, like with FLCL). It's also worth noting that the voice acting industry in North America is much smaller than that in Japan.

One must ask though, is "Are the Japanese voice actors any better?" If you watch your Anime subbed (don't speak Japanese), you have no idea how good or bad they are.
I believe what you're trying to get at is a Japanese cartoon without Japanese influences. Such things do not exist because the culture of a country/region that a work of art is created in always influence the art itself.
But, were a Western style cartoon created in Japan with no cultural influence, it would, at least by literal definition, be "Anime."
However, unless you're in Japan speaking Japanese, it would still be called a cartoon in English based on style.
@Floweramon: You're first comment was hardly "something to add to the topic" as the literal definitions are surely already on this page, and were not enlightening to me as I already know them.
If used as a borrowed term in another language it IS different. "Bara," for example, used as a noun in English would refer to a rose of a genus native to Japan - but not necessarily grown there.
Likewise "Anime" used in English means a cartoon of Japanese style - though not necessarily made in Japan.
@darkcylander Sorry sorry. I meant to say Japanimation, the proper title before the birth of the American "Otaku" cult. And like most animation, it's not all terrible. The culture around it isn't something to be desired though.

@darkcylander I took a year’s worth of animation classes in college. When anime was created it was an attempt to mimic Disney. A cost cutting measure, where they tried to mimic the cute rounded look of their early cartoons, exploit their economically friendly animation loops, layered segmented joints and a variety of other things. It wasn't out to start a new art style, it just evolved into one. It was a failed clone, that was considered a cheaper alt in the 80's that sadly has caught on.

Well, English voice actors many times lack the direction that their Japanese counterparts got (there are few exceptions, like with FLCL). It's also worth noting that the voice acting industry in North America is much smaller than that in Japan.

I saw this movie in japanese with the english subs. When this scene started i was like "wtf, they messed up the sub".

@Death2Evil: First of all, all the names are either changed (often badly) or pronounced utterly wrong (Pap-REE-kah, yeah, great pronounciation).
Secondly, the sayings lose their original quality.
I could make this list even longer, but I'm ending with that the atnmosphere of the movies are affected negativly when english voice-actors speak in a japanese movie.
