Excellent allegory! It does feel like that. Enthralling, exciting, addictive, terrifying! The feeling of being lost and overwhelmed with spectacle! That's basically _Paprika._ Sorry for my English.
I love how the lyrics critisize the modern first world culture it says things like "Rely on your SSRI pills (antidepressents), give money to the high-rise temples, liberty mimicking utopia."
also, have you noticed the amount of gender and age related tension in Paprika? It underlies the ENTIRE dream sequences and most of the film. Like some kind of Japanese Freudian fever dream.
There's something about the madness of modern culture that can consume the mind like it did Don Quixote. What's most appalling is that so many of the characters in Paprika are so easily seduced by this madness and willingly delude themselves, carelessly riding it toward their destruction. I'd always thought of this as Chris-Chan's theme (if you know who that is) but it's a danger that isn't just reserved for otakus, is it...
One of the few films that actually _gets dreams right_ and gives that strange orthogonal dimension of experience compactified inside the human mind the respect & awe that it's owed.
Actually it is partly reversed lyrics from his Nurse Cafe (Switched on Lotus version). "Ieie no mado wo yaburi " so somehting like "iruba yo wodamo neiei". So it's about breaking the windows of houses but in reverse, so maybe unbreaking the windows?
I explored Susumu Hirasawa's work because of Berserk. Ever since I found this song one day ago I'm playing it almost non-stop. And something tells me I won't stop too soon. What a genius composer
I'm pretty sure I've heard songs like this in my dreams multiple times. Probably because it's deep-rooted into my childhood. Definitely making my kid watch this movie to increase his creativity 😂

@@py_a_thon It is pretty interesting. The Japanese lyrics refer to concepts that do not go well together. Lyricstranslation does have a translation of it in English as well as other sites. It sounds and is absurd; it really makes the song interesting.

The sad messages in the chaotic words hit so deep for me. Thank you for taking the time to write this out. Only a native filmmaker would have been able to critique his culture in this way and likely did so out of anger covering a broken heart.
I can't stop thinking, what is so different in Japan for people to be able to create this kind of movies, music, stories, so full of creativity, complexity, nostalgic beauty, and after all that remaining humble and serious. No wonder it's so fascinating for so many outsiders.
Kite I imagine it's moreso the industrialization and formulization of Hollywood, in which movies are made solely because of something like pop culture or a need for a sequel in order to make more money. That's not to say there aren't movies made in the West that can make you think, it's just that most are as you already said, not as popular or well funded/advertised. An example that comes to Mind is Transcendence. A movie featuring Johnny Depp no less, that seemed to be forgotten pretty quickly.
I had done a bit of research on that in differences between US and Western and Japanese media and creativity and a ton of it is actually mainly marketing and promotion. You’ll be surprised how many films in the US that feature out of this world strangeness and interestingly unique traits that no one will hear about because it isn’t publicized or promoted as much due to common values. Ask someone about Black Swan or Mr. Nobody and you’re not going to hear about many who heard about it. But the same can be said for Japan as well. A non-anime fan might not know about Paprika but many will. Creativity is there across the ocean, you just have to search for it.
I feel more of a bleak happiness. A brief spot of light in an otherwise terrible situation, as if you managed to pay off half of a debt that once seemed insurmountable.
Hey, so my response is a little late. Anyways, I checked out the song you said and there is a definitely some similarities between the two; the most obvious one being the use of a vocoder with rapid, short syllabus to make a melody. However, in terms of genre they are drastically different(mainly due to the difference in timbre between the background instrumentals of the two). My guess is that OMFG was inspired by Hirasawa. I am, however, against calling inspiration a "rip off." That being said Parade is way better than Hello, in my opinion.
Well this song is obviously inspired from "Golden Brown", the Stranglers,. The vocal accompagnement is a copy pasta from the instrumental of "Golden Brown". Not that I mind, I like this song a lot.
This song perfectly describes the state of overthinking things, the chaos in your head with the inevitable despair that comes with it. It's when your mind literally feels like a carnival
This song is delusion incarnate, it's the purest word I can put to it. In the movie and the song itself you can easily just join the parade, having fun, losing yourself, until you're no longer really there. "lost in a delusion." Paprika or "the girl in byakkoya" is a song of hope, it's oddly very similar to parade, or "delusion" in some ways but the whole tone is one that is more light hearted and directed in a way of happiness, not neglect. Paprika brought me out of a depression so great when it was lasting for 3-4 years, and it reminded me of who I was and where I wanted to go again. I highly recommend watching the movie. If I had one wish it would be to see Satoshi Kons works completed as he envisioned them. If I had one more it would be to see Yoshihiro Togashi's work completed as he envisioned it. I think they're very similar visions, but one focuses on how the purest of emotions and how thoughts gets misinterpreted in the world around them, while the other is more about bringing those pure emotions and dreams out so they can flourish in the world around them as they are.
I love this song so much. The song adds so much to the actual parade in the anime. It's chaotic and foreboding. It's intimidating in a creepy way. Like a parade, you can't ignore it. It fits so well to the mess the parade is and the overlapping dreams. Absolutely brilliant.
This song has been deleted from Spotify. Please, bring back this masterpiece. Every time I listen to this song, I remember the good old days when I enjoyed reading the Berserk manga.
I love the beginning of this song. Paired with the picture, it reminds me of the little place and scenarios I imagined while seeing those default cartoony windows 7 wallpapers
This movie made me realize some major important things in my life I had completely forgotten, and I can't express how grateful I am. The soundtrack is like a dream, a really confusing and vague fever dream, that opens your eyes and reminds you of things you shouldn't had forgotten. This specific piece reminds me of the lowest time in my life, one I can barely remember, I forgot everything, and then this piece suddenly started playing. It is a very confusing feeling, but I'm grateful I've listened to it. edit 2+ years later.... the least i can say is that i wouldnt be at the same stage in my life if i had never watched this movie. sometimes i think that all that happened, happened for a reason, sometimes i think that ignorance is bliss. sometimes i wish i never remembered. however, maybe it all was for the best.
This is chaotic, yet so entrancing. Gonna say it even competes with Chouwa Oto, maybe even better. The lyrics are so surreal, yet sorrowful. It gives the whole movie a different meaning.
This movie reminds me the scene in NieR: Automata where the player encounters robot parade in amusement park, and it's beautiful in a way that memories I do not have starts making me feel nostalgic. I want dreams like this where imagination is freed from its shackles
i could not for the life of me place why this song felt so familiar watching paprika until i saw this comment. it totally reminded me of that scene from nier
Even without the scene for context, or a translation flashing accross the screen the song feels as if you are slowly descending into a joyful madness. "You'll be fine, just go with it."
Better translation Energy in the heart, chemical foam, I walk through a street of hired cars, old tyres, blood and meet This is liberty, a parody on utopia Gorgeous rows of trees [on the avenue of] buyers and Giga Movies, it’s a sunny day Minor depressions are pranks, rose colour is low priced, Therefore, rejoice - to the extent you can hardly bear Dying literacy - we kill it mechanically A street of traders, hanging wires and formaldehyde Drying synergy - we moisten it with synthetic sweetness In the mega-temple of skyscrapers a frenzy rain of funds falls I cannot write the word ‘ignorance’, but the future is low-priced Laugh that this is in general a superstition. A story of karma See, giving an off-smell, eating your shadow A parade of fear is coming, under your name An MC of roar - it’s a lethal dose for a civilian A street of the disabled, diamonds for sell and reason fallen into blood This is liberty, a parody on utopia What I ask for is SSRI. And now, hi-ho on the terrace of vogue Minor theories are nonsense, pleasure is low-priced On no account you should reflect, for it is too late See, giving an off-smell, eating your shadow A parade of fear is coming, under your name See, it can cover everything around, your shadow produces it - The parade of insanity is coming, under your name
The first time I heard this song in the movie, it just dragged me along and I couldn't forget about it. Every time I watched "Paprika", I was waiting only for this song to come, I kept myself alert only to capture the very moment of the first instrument to play, and then started humming along. Man, this is seriously one of the best songs I ever heard in my life, even if I don't understand a single thing about the lyrics (as much as all the other music styles I listen to are pretty much like that).
I can’t explain it with this song because while it’s so joyous with the drums and everything, it’s also so nightmarish. Perhaps it’s because there’s so many things going on in the song itself you kind of lose thought about it and can’t keep up.
Since this song was made for the nightmarish scenes of the parade in Paprika, I'd say it's definitely intentional. Probably to represent Japan's (and to be honest, many societies) problems. A song to represent how we live day by day ignoring such problems, and if we don't deal with them, they will cause our downfall.
well there is one, might be one, Paprika is based on a book by Yasuka TsuiTsui. But yeah, a book how it makes YOU feel, that would be interesting. Have fun
Meravigliosa!!! This song reminds me of the poem "Parade" by Arthur Rimbaud: "Sturdy enough jesters. Several have exploited your worlds. Devoid of need, in no hurry to make play of their brilliant faculties or their knowledge of your conscience. How ripe they are! Eyes dazed like the summer night, red and black, tricolours, steel pricked with golden stars; features deformed, leaden, pallid, on fire; hoarse-throated frolickers! A cruel swagger of faded finery! - Some are young - how do they view Cherubino? - endowed with frightening voices and dangerous resources. They’re sent out soliciting in city streets, decked out in disgusting luxury. Oh the most violent Paradise of a maddened grimace! Way beyond your Fakirs and other theatrical buffooneries. In improvised costumes of nightmarish taste they play romances, tragedies of bandits and demigods, spiritual as the tales and religions never were. Chinese, Hottentots, bohemians, fools, hyenas, Molochs, old madnesses, sinister demons, mingling popular homely turns with bestial poses and caresses. They’re ready for new pieces and ‘sweet’ little songs. Master jugglers, they transform people and places and reveal magnetic stagecraft. Eyes inflamed, blood sings, bones thicken, tears and trickles of rouge stream down. Their raillery and their terror lasts a moment, or months entire. I alone hold the key to this savage parade."
I was so confused when I saw this at a theater with a friend in 2006. I finally rewatched it and like it a lot more now. This song and the main theme song were so catchy. I have no idea what's being said but it's amazing.

I can't stop thinking, what is so different in Japan for people to be able to create this kind of movies, music, stories, so full of creativity, complexity, nostalgic beauty, and after all that remaining humble and serious. No wonder it's so fascinating for so many outsiders.
I have to assume that the west is more harsh on "strangeness," but it's probably more complicated than that.
A movie featuring Johnny Depp no less, that seemed to be forgotten pretty quickly.
what's so different in japan? maybe getting nuked... twice? 🤔

Zani I agree

The scene in the movie was absolutely made by this song. A perfect collaboration.
This song is delusion incarnate, it's the purest word I can put to it.
In the movie and the song itself you can easily just join the parade, having fun, losing yourself, until you're no longer really there.
"lost in a delusion."
Paprika or "the girl in byakkoya" is a song of hope, it's oddly very similar to parade, or "delusion" in some ways but the whole tone is one that is more light hearted and directed in a way of happiness, not neglect.
Loved it . The moment you realise same guy created berserk guts theme

That made no fucking sense even for being in that movie. Use puns the right way
It already has the spice included "paprika".
Crazy how this song captures such a strange, dreamlike grandeur while being unsettling. I don't think there's a more fitting song for this movie

Even without the scene for context, or a translation flashing accross the screen the song feels as if you are slowly descending into a joyful madness. "You'll be fine, just go with it."

Better translation
Energy in the heart, chemical foam,
I walk through a street of hired cars, old tyres, blood and meet
This is liberty, a parody on utopia
Gorgeous rows of trees [on the avenue of] buyers and Giga Movies, it’s a sunny day
Minor depressions are pranks, rose colour is low priced,
Therefore, rejoice - to the extent you can hardly bear
Dying literacy - we kill it mechanically
A street of traders, hanging wires and formaldehyde
Drying synergy - we moisten it with synthetic sweetness
In the mega-temple of skyscrapers a frenzy rain of funds falls
I cannot write the word ‘ignorance’, but the future is low-priced
Laugh that this is in general a superstition. A story of karma
See, giving an off-smell, eating your shadow
A parade of fear is coming, under your name
An MC of roar - it’s a lethal dose for a civilian
A street of the disabled, diamonds for sell and reason fallen into blood
This is liberty, a parody on utopia
What I ask for is SSRI. And now, hi-ho on the terrace of vogue
Minor theories are nonsense, pleasure is low-priced
On no account you should reflect, for it is too late
See, giving an off-smell, eating your shadow
A parade of fear is coming, under your name
See, it can cover everything around, your shadow produces it -
The parade of insanity is coming, under your name
Parts of the other translation are better. La Vie en rose is a saying with specific meaning.

カラオケで出されて困る曲ランキング1位
I can’t explain it with this song because while it’s so joyous with the drums and everything, it’s also so nightmarish. Perhaps it’s because there’s so many things going on in the song itself you kind of lose thought about it and can’t keep up.
Since this song was made for the nightmarish scenes of the parade in Paprika, I'd say it's definitely intentional.
Probably to represent Japan's (and to be honest, many societies) problems. A song to represent how we live day by day ignoring such problems, and if we don't deal with them, they will cause our downfall.
it was a song which played in the parade of dreams
I want to write a book that makes people feel the way this song makes me feel.
Go for it ! All you have to do is write (well..that's the hardest part actually)
if you do write it one day I'll be glad to read it ! :)
I’d be reading that book whatever the format is ( manga, novel, graphic novel, audio book ) I’d be buying 4-5
well there is one, might be one, Paprika is based on a book by Yasuka TsuiTsui.
But yeah, a book how it makes YOU feel, that would be interesting. Have fun

Omg yes a surrealistic book
Meravigliosa!!! This song reminds me of the poem "Parade" by Arthur Rimbaud:
"Sturdy enough jesters.
Hirasawa makes really interesting and unique music. He’s becoming one of my favourite artists
