THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I'm a massive Celtics fan and Avery Bradley has been my favorite player since Rondo left. He doesn't get enough respect for his game
I notice that when he pokes at the dribbling pocket it's almost always when his bod is in contact with the ball handler's opposite hand. This makes it hard for the ball handler to change directions with their other hand disabled.
Avery Bradley is a great defender whether it's him sliding, aggressive steals, P&R play and the stamina to defend the players. One thing I noticed that Kobe said in a video about defending is the game is so fast so tricks with hard work and talent go a long way. Elite defenders don't just cut off players. As you can see in the video Avery cuts off and does a slight hold on the off arm/hand as he goes for the steal. Helps get steals and refs don't always see it. Great video. I love the your work.
Love these videos. Like the new format - sound quality is much better. Thanks for doing this Coach Mike. Really looking forward to more of this as the season begins. I'm a point guard, and would love to see breakdowns of John Stockton, Chris Paul, and Ricky Rubio. Also, would love to see a breakdown of strategies to guard the pick and roll for both the defender on the ball and the defender of the screener.
been meaning to give this vid props forever... day after i watched it a few months ago, i swear to you i went to open gym the next day and had like 10 on-ball steals lol. was surprising the hell out of myself picking pockets left and right.
The secret to how he steals the ball is that he waits for the ballhandler to stick their off arm out to push off him which is why he plays tight into the player to encourage or bait this. Once he gets this he uses his arm to push down on it. Not only does this help lunge forward to dig at the ball but it throws off the dribblers balance as well. Takes a lot of skill to pull off without getting blown for a reach in foul.
Coach thx for the great video! Good to see you back! Your channel helps me to get a lot of steals and put on defensive pressure on the opponent every game! For the new format, I think the old music is better.
I love players that play strong defense, I can't help but respect them. Still I feel that lunging towards the ball whilst avoiding contact could be risky. If you mess up or time it wrong refs could easily call a reach....
thanks +Coach Mike u helped me become a better defender by ur videos and I hope u keep this new format and keep doing what u do. For another lockdown defense tutorial can u showcase Tony Allen who Kobe Bryant said was the best defender he has ever faced.
One of my all-time favorite players. Going to kill me to have to watch him in a Piston's uniform. Bottom line - he was too good to keep. Priced himself out of the market. Will get at least $20M per next year, and deserves it. Terrific player.
Coach Mike, I'm happy to say that all of your defense videos have earned me so much playing time for my HS team. But however, I do have a few flaws and some questions. 1. Sometimes whenever I thrust my body at the body when the driver drives, I get called a reach in. And also, isn't attempting a steal at the ballside with my opposite hand like in the video a foul? 2. I'm a huge liability whenever I find myself in post defense, bigger players body me and score on me. 3. I sometimes get tired guarding fast and shifty ball-handlers, do you know any drills for me to improve my conditioning? Thank You
1. it will definitely be called a foul at the high school level because it looks like you impede the movement of the offensive player. So it is hard to use 2. I was an undersized player in the post as well, studying Scottie Pippen's defense completely changed me. Instead of wrestling back, I avoided contact altogether. It's hard to post someone you can't feel. I would always shift my feet to the sides of them before the entry pass trying to jump the lane when I anticipated a pass. I would also grab their arms as sling shots like Tony Allen does sometimes. When they caught the ball the advantage was in their favor and I would go for their first dribble, pull the chair out but mostly avoid contact so they couldn't seal me off. Then when they turned for their post move I would try to strip the ball or at least contest it. The most important thing was not being pushed around and getting out of position for me. 3. The best conditioning to play defense is to play defense, and do it as much as possible at as high a level of intensity you can. My favorite team drill is continuous 1v1 for 2 minutes. The same defenders stays on defense for 2 minutes as he goes through opponent after opponent on a closeout. My main suggestions is to just find as many pick up games you can and never to take a play off, even running the floor on offense. There is no better prep for a game environment. If you can't play then you have to simulate short recovery times with intense activity. Whether it is sprinting and having short breaks or doing an agility drill. The main thing is to track your ability to preform at your peak with minimal rest-recovery time. For example if you sprint a 100m in 10 seconds, how long do you need to recover until you can do it again. Work to shorten that recovery time.
the fact that you did Avery Bradley shows that u know basketball. Yeh kawai and draymond are good but its tough to defend the opponents guard on the perimeter. I cant think of a team that dont have a superstar, star or really good guards. And this guys assignment is to lock em down. No wonder why lillard said avery is the best perimeter defender in the league
if you do what Avery Bradley does when he steals the ball, you will have no room for error. literally all you have to do is do a behind the back stepback when commits and he will not be able to recover
yes, you could do a spin when he goes for steals too.....the thing is no many people can shot consistently a behind the back stepback, and even if anyone do it, you are ok with a mid-range...
i have a better drill that improves your defence but to be specific it improves foot work, leg movement speed, balance, makes your legs stronger, makes your back stronger, makes yo have more stamina (like my comment or reply if you like my drill)kinda dangerous but here it is you go to some kind of small apartment stairs with close together railings and then you run up the stairs backwards in a defensive position so being low and legs wide out and back straight and stuff. you try to do this as fast as possible and keep doing it. when you lose balance and are about to fall (dangerous part) you quickly hold your self up by the 2 railings of the stairs that are close enough for you to grab so it has to be in a small stair way or else the danger of it goes up by a lot so have your hands close to the railings to grab it if you fall i haven't fallen yet, so try it i have been doing it and i have seen great results :) t
I like it! Although there are experts saying backward exercise are a gimmick: ( www.nytimes.com/1998/10/13/health/no-gain-in-backward-exercise-experts-say.html ) But I think it helps when it comes to defense. Working on hip mobility, coordination, backward movement pattern and strengthening the legs.
Coach Mike +Coach Mike thanks for replying srry for posting the same comment on so many of your vids also yeah some do say its bad but so many more say it's good also your videos are awesome keep making more!
Dude great video. But he’s definitely not the best on ball defender. Could you cover some better defenders? How about a Harden vid? That’s just my advice
Oprah SideNiga actually he doesn't! Majority of the games he's shooting poorly against him! This year where Derozan dominated the Celtics Bradley didn't play majority of those games because of injuries!
His ability to poke out the ball and steal from literally some of the best PG's in the world is ridiculous. Amazing video coach mike - easy sub!
+Rizwan Awan (TheOnlyRizzy) thanks man, I appreciate it
I love this RUclipsr he is always helping me be a better player and lock people down
+Anthony banks thanks! Spread the lockdown way. Keep up the hard work
+Coach Mike I will and thanks for replaying
First-Team All-Defense..First-Team All-Defense..First-Team All-Defense
Very underrated. Puts the clamps but has solid offense too
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I'm a massive Celtics fan and Avery Bradley has been my favorite player since Rondo left. He doesn't get enough respect for his game
Randomly browsed in youtube and stumbled upon this vid and now I love this channel!
Keep it up coach mike. You deserve all the subs!!
I notice that when he pokes at the dribbling pocket it's almost always when his bod is in contact with the ball handler's opposite hand. This makes it hard for the ball handler to change directions with their other hand disabled.
Please do more of these. These lockdown defense videos are my favorite basketball videos on youtube.
+Sam Shulman thanks man, they take a lot of work. I appreciate the support
Coach Mike is back. Awesome! I'm looking forward to great new videos.
This guy is my favourite player, defensive player, and now he can shot pretty well
Avery Bradley is a great defender whether it's him sliding, aggressive steals, P&R play and the stamina to defend the players. Thanks for posting this Coach Mike. Your videos help me learn new techniques to improve my game! Please keep posting videos like this!
Appreciate the support! Keep working hard and spreading the lockdown way
Great contest, extremely useful, keep up the great work!
Love it! It's so hard to find a tutorial for defense these days
Oh - and Marcus Smart
Analyzing the defensive manners of NBA players are very helpful! Thanks for this analyzation 😃✌
can you do one for marcus smart?
highlight how good he is at going over screens!
you mean one where there is a battle for being the most insane nba flopper?
Marcus Smart Defense- Flopdown Breakdown
Welcome to the Lakers. 😀😀😀
I love these videos. So helpful, thanks
been meaning to give this vid props forever... day after i watched it a few months ago, i swear to you i went to open gym the next day and had like 10 on-ball steals lol. was surprising the hell out of myself picking pockets left and right.
Great to hear! Sometimes just watching a great defender activates the mind to play like an elite defender
love the lockdown breakdown series.
+Victor Martinez thanks for the support!
Great analysis. Gotta try this on the court

Thank you for this I'm trying to complete my game and my defense is one of those parts to do so this helps so much
Coach thx for the great video! Good to see you back! Your channel helps me to get a lot of steals and put on defensive pressure on the opponent every game! For the new format, I think the old music is better.
+Chan Kevin thanks for the feedback. Keep up the hard work on the court! Love to hear it
+Chan Kevin thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. And keep up the hard work, I love to hear that
DUDE WE NEED MORE OF THIS
I agree. Defense is an art
I love players that play strong defense, I can't help but respect them. Still I feel that lunging towards the ball whilst avoiding contact could be risky. If you mess up or time it wrong refs could easily call a reach....
A reaching foul is nowhere in the NBA rulebook. It doesn' t exist.
+Dan Brown I'm sorry but you are wrong. There is such a thing as a reach in foul, look it up.
LOCKDOWN! Welcome to the Lakers!
He makes defense fun to watch
thanks +Coach Mike u helped me become a better defender by ur videos and I hope u keep this new format and keep doing what u do. For another lockdown defense tutorial can u showcase Tony Allen who Kobe Bryant said was the best defender he has ever faced.
Great video Coach Mike :)
Great vid... How about a little Marcus Smart breakdown!?
breakdown of his flops
Keep these coming
RON ARTEST, SHANE BATTIER, CHRIS PAUL, RONDO
Great channel. Congratulations and thanks.
explosive hard working athlete who earns every penny... also great length of arms for his size helps but takes nothing away from his amazing effort
Great video! You have definitely earned a sub.
+Fernando Trevizo thanks man, appreciate it
Coach Mike no prob
I love defense, love when snatch peoples souls
You should do a video about Klay Thompson!
A Point Guard's worst nightmare is 48 Minutes of prime Avery Bradley.
great content!!
great i learning alot
Can you do a breakdown for Matisse Thybulle from the sixers? I mean, his "from behind" block was... something else
Man it’s sad that nowadays his defense would be called a foul
Love the thumbnail design! Keep it
Thanks! Appreciate the observation and comment
+Coach Mike any day coach!
Lakeshow baby!!!!!!
Klay Thompson, Patrick Beverley, and Avery Bradley are shooting guards that can play defense and make open 3's, and they bring victory.
One of my all-time favorite players. Going to kill me to have to watch him in a Piston's uniform. Bottom line - he was too good to keep. Priced himself out of the market. Will get at least $20M per next year, and deserves it. Terrific player.
does he try to be on the same side as the ball is when guarding
I couldnt do that in highschool the ref would call a foul every time lmao
Top 3 perimeter lockdown defender in the league IMO

Coach what if good enough to spin off you when you go for the steal
can you do josh richardson... he can steal and block
You need to do tony Allen!
Agreed! ruclips.net/video/MojnWTOSSVk/видео.html
Isn't going for the ball make you vulnerable to get crossed or going for it on a drive vulnerable to be hit with a euro-step
Do u have one on ron arest
Send this video to all the 80's/90's super fans that think that Hand-checking does not exist today
If you thrust your whole body to where the ball is; and they counter; aren't you beat? I feel as if the thrusting is a risky move
What about Eric Bledsoe?
thank you very much!I sub
Trevor ariza
Tony Allen
Iman shumpert
Kevin Garnett
Are some other players you can do in the future, so far good work bro
Great list. Just uploaded Tony Allen ruclips.net/video/MojnWTOSSVk/видео.html
marcus smart video

Went to middle school with Avery he's always played defense like this
Cool story looks like thats just his natural instinct than
i doubt that tbh
Nah he literally has always played tight defense like this I'm telling you
Dalitszz ok
He'd be a great fit for the sixers.
Could you do draymond green after the Avery Bradley series?
Yes Green would be a good option!

Can we get a tony Allen video?? Maybe even jimmy butler
Tony Allen uploaded! ruclips.net/video/MojnWTOSSVk/видео.html

Andre roberson pls

he's the best perimeter defender in the league
Lakers baby
Tony Allen?
Great idea! ruclips.net/video/MojnWTOSSVk/видео.html
my favorite defender great breakdown btw.
#BestDefender
The whole thrusting the body, is that not a foul? I don’t want no fouls called me
Dude great video. But he’s definitely not the best on ball defender. Could you cover some better defenders? How about a Harden vid? That’s just my advice
Why haven't we talked about Jimmy Butler, the most effective "Lebron Stopper"?!
Eromosare Aghomon I think u mean Kawhi- Jimmy is a close 2nd tho
If he could up his scoring ability he would be on of the elite players in the league.
Done!
KG
GO LAKERS!!!!!
Better defender than Marcus Smart has ever been tbh. That's why awards don't tell the full story
At least the DYOP has been shifting to perimeter players now
Like if you're here because of the Lakers. #LAKESHOW
He better play like this or LeBron gone trade his ass
Funny because I think him and Steph both have the same overall in defense 88 .
avery been the best perimeter defender in the league for the past two years and it aint even close (kawhi isn't a perimeter defender)
u sound dumb
1:23
Jimmy Butler lockdown defense
I swear Derozan drops 30+ppg everytime against him.
I think derozan is taller then bradly ,that is the reason....
Oprah SideNiga actually he doesn't! Majority of the games he's shooting poorly against him! This year where Derozan dominated the Celtics Bradley didn't play majority of those games because of injuries!
Great defender like these just mke you so mad
Welcome to the Lakers:
Avery Bradley
Danny Green
Lebron James
Anthony Davis
JaVale McGee
thats exactly how MJ would steal the ball
You put a chance down block highlight film without LeBron James? HAHAHA
