There has been a lot of demand for more information about Secrets of Blackmoor, as well as a desire to see more footage. Film making is a long process. Until a film is finished, all you have is masses of footage. We really appreciate all of the supportive messages people have sent and we want to thank you for your interest in this project.
This interview was done as part of the production of "Secrets of Blackmoor" - a two hour documentary on the history and development of Dungeons & Dragons. Other parts of this interview appear in the movie. You can pre-order your copy of the movie on Kickstarter now at: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
This week, we've taken a small amount of time away from working on the movie and clipped together a brief segment from Pete Gaylord's interview.
Pete Gaylord was part of Dave Arneson's gaming group. He played one of the more famous characters in Arneson's Blackmoor games: The Wizard of the Wood.
Just as there is a first dungeon master, there is a first wizard.
Pete is the first person to ever be a wizard in a role playing game. His input as a player in Blackmoor is largely undocumented, yet without a player who wanted to be a wizard, Arneson would not have been forced to adapt his game to include magic spells. His story really is one of the secrets of blackmoor.
We hope you enjoy seeing Pete explain a little bit about his role in the creation of Blackmoor. This interview is very special to us. Pete is missed by everyone who knows him. His legacy is immortalized any time a D&D player decides to be a magic user.

I love how the interviewer's questions get increasingly pedantic to the point of being remedial.
"Built Blackmore?! What does that mean?"
    "And what is Blackmoor?"
    "Dave? Dave who?"
"And this is a game of some sort?"
"Back up now, who the hell are you?!"
    "And me, who am I?"

I still play AD&D 2nd edition with house rules in my own setting .
I also took many of the dragon magazines classes and races and made then balanced with the core classes and races .
To me 3.+ and beyond seemed more like you were playing a fantasy superhero rpg with all its over powered feats instead of a fantasy rpg and 4th edition wasn't d&d at all and was a fantasy tabletop mmo and I couldn't stand it

What was the wizard's name (besides The Wizard of the Wood) ?

    • @davidmegarrysdungeon6046
      @davidmegarrysdungeon6046  6 лет назад +27

As far as we know he was simply the Wizard of the Wood. But you also have to consider that since Blackmoor was the first RPG fantasy world, Arneson's players began the game as themselves in the real world and then went through a cave and appeared in Blackmoor. All of the players soon realized that playing as yourself would lead to YOU dying eventually, so they changed their names. It's entirely possible that the wizard was just known as Peter.

The best part of 5e D&D is the recognition of these original creaters and the whole community coming together around them.

They were all pushed out of their own company decades ago, then that company was run into the ground before being bought up by WotC. Most of them also lost the ip rights to their original characters, along with the rights to the settings. Robilar, the first real dnd fighter was made to betray his friends and murdered several of them in the metaplot, something his original player asserted he'd never do. That was back in like 2nd or 3rd edition somewhere.
At this point I don't think they have much to do with dnd at all.
And they weren't just original creators of dnd. They were the first people to create roleplaying games as a concept. It's... quite impressive.

@@doncoyote68 Small correction, but roleplaying games have existed in some documented form since at least 200 BC. Considering humans' proclivities for imagination and play, I'd imagine they've existed since long before that even. But with that said, people like Dave Arneson, David Wesely, Duane Jenkins, and Gary Gygax are definitely responsible for creating what we think of as *modern* roleplaying games.

We sat with Peter and Gail for about 2 hours. We were in a conversation. Yet, I was looking for answers to questions that others had not answered in their interviews. Most of the people in their group often speak in coded gamer talk, I call it gamer babble, and sometimes you need to make them back up and refine what they said more clearly, or it isn't clear at all. I have searched for a decent Dave Arneson interview where someone would ask him to clarify a statement, and there isn't one; because no one would act like a jerk a do a little bit of brow beating. As I watch those interviews, I ask myself: why didn't they ask about (filin blank) over and over. The historical community is stell perplexed by much of what Arneson did, because of a lack of critical and detailed questioning. I feel really fortunate to have gotten to know Peter. He was really awesome and was playing military miniature games up until about a week before he passed -Griff

@@jamesdavid7782 What makes you think I do not respect them? These are my friends. When Peter passed away I was depressed for days. I felt the same way when Duane passed. As I edit footage of their interviews it is a very emotional experience. I feel proud to have recorded them telling their stories before it was too late. When I saw Gail at the film premier she gave me the hugest hug and was so sweet. I hold all the people in the film near my heart. They are very special to me. - Griff
