    "I need to share something that's been on my heart..." was my granny's go to line. Of course it wasn't gossip, it was sharing 'prayer requests' even if that person didn't know they were going on granny's prayer list.

      I'll second this as the only boy in the family from a small town who spent tons of time with his Oma and her friends from the sewing circle growing up.
      They're all dead now (as happens when most of the people in question were in their 60s/70s in the '80s), but I know all the skeletons in pretty much every family's proverbial closets.

      I have a personal rule don’t say anything about anyone you wouldn’t say to their face. I sometimes break it accidentally and regret it with or without consequence but that’s the rule!

But sometimes people are manipulative and take advantage of others, particularly at work, and we are frustrated and angry and need to get it off our chests. Sometimes people know full well that what they are doing is wrong, we’ve told them it’s wrong, and they do it anyway. We don’t have to bottle that up inside.

      It’s good to not bottle things up. It’s also good to solve problems and not complain constantly. Sometimes you have to calmly and sternly say something for yourself so you aren’t treated like crap. Staying calm is key!! Calm people are the ones in control! Even a calm person getting yelled at is the one in control.

I hear a lot of people are hiring because no one wants to work. Even if the job market was bad I’d just keep applying to better job constantly and going on interviews when I could until I found a job of equal or greater value. Just get away from toxic environments like that!

    I've been in Oregon for 8 years now and I just now put it together why people look at me weird when I gossip! I always start out with, "She's such an ANGEL... buuuut...." and end with "But, it's not like I'm perfect, either!" Meanwhile, they're like, "She's a B.I.T.C.H. And I have NEVER sunk that low!" I always thought it was just personal differences, but now I see its cultural differences!

      I live in Rhode Island and we tend to be up front with our gossip, but whenever a person moves up her from the south, I've noticed just a difference in gossip. It's fine I get it.

    Years ago I developed the following theory about gossiping: we gossip to get rid of irritations that are minor to the friendship we feel.
    So the friendship keeps going smoothly. This was a nice demonstration of the idea. Now they going to have a marvellous day.

    Oh dear, that brought on my PTSD...my parents just couldn't say enough bad things about anyone. The minute you could see their taillights going down the driveway it was game on. They said the most terrible things about people and quoted it as gospel all while being as nice as pie to their faces.... The worst I will say is "she means well."- and with no "but"....

      It’s bad to keep associating with someone you don’t like and then talk about them. It’s like you’re just using them to get more tidbits to spread to others. Much better to stop socializing with them. Bad supervisors and cunning manipulators at work are another story.

    I was in Alabama and met a New Yorker, so we were talking about not being Southern and she said "Yeah, we're rude in New York but at least we're honest. People here though, they'll be sweet and kind and the minute you turn around they're ready to stab you in the back." This seems like an accurate representation of how she described Southerners.

      I heard a Canadian, who lived down here for a while, say that Southerners have tribes and you are either in the tribe or you are not. It doesn't matter your race, religion, ethnicity, or place of birth, you're either a member of the tribe or not. And I had to say I agree because I've seen various outsiders accepted and others who were not.
      If you're in the tribe, everyone may gossip about you behind your back, but they sure as hell will not let an outsider say anything negative about you. Like you may refer to all of your family members as rednecks, but let a yankee say that and you'll be ready to duel to the death over that insult.

    The Southwest is a different culture but growing up rural on the Rio Grande (as a little kid so the women were kinda careless about letting me overhear) the gossip was pretty similar in the 50s except instead of social media it was landline party lines. (I hope y'all understand what party lines were.)

    I grew up with so much gossip…it was how all the women bonded…I never knew til I was older how toxic it was. I mean I love me some tea but….I’m more mindful of it. I always end with…well we don’t know the WHOLE story…or none of my business what they do. I’m terrible and should be ashamed of myself 😂

    Can you imagine...when I was little.. my Mom would tell me to go outside and play when the neighborhood ladies would come by to "talk". I would imagine that whatever it was...the security of the country was at risk and it was top secret. No one was to find out what was going on!!!       No, in my in-laws it was if you weren't in the kitchen cleaning up after the holiday meal. It was the second wife who stayed at the table with the men folk while we gossiped doing dishes that got talked about., God rest her soul.
