At this point in his career, Cage wasn't an action hero, nor the walking meme machine that he is today. He'd been in comedies or serious but quirky roles and was seen as a rom-com star as much as anything. When The Rock was released, he'd just won Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas. Then we suddenly got The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off back-to-back.
There’s something to be said about the stand off in the showers scene between Ed Harris and Michael Bein. For being in a summer blockbuster explosion fest that was some S tier acting from all with fantastic editing and a score that led to a very gripping scene that I will never forget.
This one of the movies that defined 90's action. Over the top, cheesy at times, still looks solid and is a lot of fun. So many great supporting actors in this.
With all bombastic ridiculousness that Michael Bay has given us this is by far the his best film. Great actors giving their all to make a fun action film. ❤ it.
There was an incredibly interesting video that put forth the theory that Sean Connery’s character was in fact the Connery James Bond. Going through so many details there wasn’t a single scene or line of dialogue that would make it break cannon. And quite a few things that lined up with both time lines, and gave it credibility. Wish I remembered who made the video.
The ever expanding clarifications of "The rock, that is the prison not the..." got me every time. Particularly excellent writing in this one chum, nice one. More fatal explosions than a gender reveal party mad me lol. Good stuff :)
I second the recommendation to visit Alcatraz. The only reason I went when I lived in San Francisco was because a friend of mine's mom was visiting and wanted to go, so I tagged along to be nice. I ended up really enjoying it even though I really didn't feel like going originally. Really fascinating place, and it's very well set up as historic site.
Great movie, when i first got a DVD player around 2002, The Rock was the 1st DVD I bought. It is very quotable "Your best, Goodspeed", "Your between a Rock and a hardcase", "I drive a Volvo, a beige one" . Also a fun fact, the design of the VEX Poison gas rockets, in the way they shown in the movie was deliberately wrong (they wanted to make them look cool), but the British government took the design from this movie and put into the infamous "dodgy dossier" in 2003 used to justify the war in Iraq. It was later admitted they just took it from the movie, following a Google search, I kid you not.
As a young(er) man, I didn't 'get' Nicholas Cage. However, I have developed a deep appreciation of his talent, his ability to not take himself seriously, and to just take on any role, regardless of budget or prestige, just to do something new. Mandy, Pig, Renfield, Raising Arizona, Primal. and Colour out of Space, the only decent H.P. Lovecraft adaption. When he appeared in an oh-so brief cameo as Superman in the also-totally underrated Flash movie, I yelled out, scaring the cats let me tell you. By the way Colour out id Space is definitely worth a review.
I was trained by the best...British Intelligence. Then "M" chucked me out and replaced me...with FIVE new guys. So you have the best of the best in one man: 007 and the only successful escapee from Alcatraz :)....and robbed a few trains of their gold in his youth. (The Great Train Robbery - also starting Connery).
Like this film a lot. However, I always think they missed a trick in the quips department. When that Irish American bloke is beating up Sean Connery he keeps calling him English. So, when Connery kills him, I wanted him to say, "I'm Scottish you wee shite!"
Soooo…..when will you be doing Twin Peaks? It definitely ticks a lot of Stam Fine boxes. It could even lead to a series of SF reviews of David Lynch films (at least Blue Velvet).
Apart, from basically everything about the "Vx" (color, how it works, how Atropine works, etc.) it was a nice action movie... But the final straw was injecting a shitload of Atropine directly into the heart! Hollywood running rampant after firing all advisors and anyone with a tiny bit of knowledge about those things to keep the plot going. 😂😂😂
The best epilogue to the James Bond series.

The Laura Palmer moment broke me. Wonderful dark humor.
Con Air is a movie i just can't stop watching. It's not a good film but it is great entertainment.
This one and ConAir are the quintessential mid-90s action summer blockbusters.
Ehh.... I'd put in Independence Day or Twister over Con-Air.

I loved The Rock when it came out and still think it's a great action film.
My gran grew up watching Sean Connery Bond films and loved them. She also loved The Rock. I always thought that was hilarious XD
This movie was just fun, love the james bond reference , the military vets upset at the govt , its just a quintessential 90s movie
One of my favorite Bond movies
Seeing as you showed a clip from 'Mystery Men' , I think that film should be covered in the near future. An underrated movie.
Yes please! Great actors doing parts for pure fun/slumming.
The Rock is a minor classic, has a fond place in my heart. Lots of good stuff to enjoy
Ed Harris’ General Hummel was a great antagonist
Hummel was a weak character but Harris did a great job pulling it off.
I always dig Ed!
I just went to bed just as another Stam Fine video dropped...
And I have to wait til morning so I don't wake anyone up. 😢

I know that guy absolutely nailed it - it is the end to connerys bond as far as I’m concerned 👍
Pentex Productions is the one I know. Very persuasive case.
@@beatrixwickson8477 yes that’s the one 👍 brilliant job

Thanks for the Twin Peaks joke.
Very nice.

Stam Fine. Always enjoyable.
Of all the movies Michael Bay made, the Rock is one of them. And I mean it.
Thank-you for leaving the swearing in 😊
R.I.P. Sean Connery O.B.E.
“We salute you” 😂
Instant sub. Thank big flash drive !
"More fatal explosions than a gender reveal party." EPIC COMMENT WIN!!!!!!!!! That was one of your best asides since "Tom Paris is a dick!".
the rock added "I shit you not" to my vocab
I’ve bonded with many a man quoting this film.
The Rock - the best James Bond movie ever made - the real swan song for Sean Connery’s stint as bond 👍
I wouldn't say it's the best but it is a good swan song.
thank you for your work!
Thank God!!!
1996 was awesome!
Twin peaks incoming 😉
Connery's swearing just feels all wrong now that you mention it !
I loved this movie!
Good review and nice TP reference.
Nicolas Cage illustrious career..
: - The Rock
: - Con Air
C'mon, he did better than that.
@@ricardocantoral7672 meh 🤷♂️....
😅
Even more good jokes than usual.
First time I've noticed your audio engineer, Franklin Martha Farquar

I'm all for Nicolas Cage marathon if you're in the mood for covering some movies of him in a row 😁
Refreshing to see you reviewing a movie you actually enjoyed 🤣
Thaaa Rock
The JAMES BOND film we deserved!

Forget Never Say Never Again, THIS was Sean Connery's final James Bond performance.
Exactly. It's in my 007 head canon.
@@tonyclements1147 I'd like to think one of the writers saw NSNA and said, "Sean deserves better."

The movie Wild At Heart is the best Cage movie.
7:30 LOLOLOLOL the fuck, dude??
James Bond escapes from Alcatraz
con air next 😛
It's obviously a bond film, which fits in very well when you accept bond is a code name
It’s a decent bond movie 😂😂😂
I have a big soft spot for The Rock. 😂
How about Ghost rider 1 and 2? Amazing how Cage got 2 bites of the apple and not sure if 2 is a sequel or not. Also..Marvel?
I wonder what makes this sci-fi
Good movie - terrible Script. That's all I have to say about this Movie (I give it a 6.5/10)
Spot On...And I will always love Connery, I'm Scottish... This was his lasht Jamesh Bond role...Q you are a Shite....For Shore Eyesh
Stam Fine Squite Good.
Thumbs up just for slagging off the hack Bay.
Bay would have been better off being a second unit director.
I know a lot of people like this movie, but I always thought it was garbage.
Notification Squad!!! :D
I'm sorry...I actually like the Transformer movies, especially the only 2 good ones.
Pour one out for microfiche.

Entrapment was very good and Finding Forester is excellent (classic even). So not true that this was Connery's last good film.
GOD DID THIS MOVIE SUCK!
I'm not God, but that's the closest you got to being correct in your little comment.
No.
@@TheToonMonkey YES
No it didn't. This is only good film Michael Bay directed.
@@ricardocantoral7672 Yes this is the best Michael Bay movie, but it's so bad it makes Ed Wood movies look like Oscar contenders.
