Today The Greater Rhea population in Germany is an interesting case of an introduced species that has established itself in the wild. These birds originally escaped from a farm in the late 1990s in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, near the border with Schleswig-Holstein. Since then, they have successfully adapted to the local environment and have formed a self-sustaining population of 660 - 1000 individuals and in UK there a population of 40 -60 individuals
