  • Van Rhyns Pass (also spelt Vanrhyns Pass or Vanrhynspass) is an impressive pass that forms part of the R27 between Vanrhynsdorp and Nieuwoudtville on the escarpment.
The pass connects the Knersvlakte with the escarpment and affords excellent views as the pass rapidly climbs the Matsikama Mountain. There are a few view points from which to appreciate the magnificent view over the Knersvlakte but the one near the summit is the most impressive.
The original pass was designed and built by Thomas Bain in 1880 and it is named after Petrus Benjamin Van Rhyn who was born in Troe-Troe on January 21, 1828 - a farmer, businessman and member of parliament.
