My Wife and I went out on our first one together which was probably a bit ambitious. 8 miles each way, terribly out of shape, up almost 5,000 feet of elevation, rained for 3 hours of the hike up, then heated up to 90 degrees, with packs around 30lb each (We have since gotten pack weights down, obviously.) We slept in a tent on pads, on top of a mountain, uncomfortable, a little cold, and not enough sleep...There were lots of lessons learned, my knee was in agony for the whole way down/out, and we smelled absolutely horrible at the end. Still wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Fast forward now, we've each done a few more with friends or our oldest daughter, and are purchasing all of the gear needed to take the 5 year old and 7 year old out as well so the whole family can go out together once things warm up a bit!
Awesome! There's a lot that can be learned by getting out there and "doing it" - so much that you really can't glean from trip reports and/or RUclips videos! Just be prepared, I still haven't figured out how to effectively battle that hiker stench ;)
Your wonderful and beautiful child 👧 sit like A mermaid on the stone by the shore of the river she was really enjoying walking with her dad thank you little angel for your trip camping with your dad may God bless him for you.
Out of all the camping and hiking videos I've watched over the months, this is by far the best one. Having your daughter with you made this video special! Thank you for sharing.
It's so fun to take kids for the first time!! We have 4 and depending on the day, they love to go!! These are special memories and it's awesome to have a video to watch for years to come!!
Definitely! I asked her if she wanted me to record the trip, or it she'd rather I didn't, and she was very interested in having the video to go back to watch as well as share with her friends
Your channel is a breath of fresh air. So happy to see you spending quality time in the outdoors with your daughter. There is no better classroom then nature. It builds confidence and memories that she will always treasure. Good job Buddy !
@@JayMorrisonOutdoors Well your on the right track Buddy. Of all the things I've done with my kids our outdoor adventures are the ones they remember and treasure the most.
Looks like a great time spent with your daughter! No better way to connect. Just returned from my own adventure but I do miss the times spent with my son and daughters in the woods. Looks like a future RUclips star!!
Awww that is awesome! Way to keep the hike short! My daughter is 10 and our 1st backpacking trip was when she was 8. That hike was 2.25 miles and a little long. Her longest now is 6.2 miles with about an 11 lb pack! She generally enjoys it but the hiking part is her least favorite. She is super helpful on setting up and she even cooks dinner now! Great job dad!!
Thanks! Yea, Kiley does some day trips with me, and 5-6 miles is usually her comfort limit, She can definitely do more, but the longer the trip, the less enjoyment she gets out of it. That was why I picked a very short trail for her first overnight. She carried her sleep system and water, and I carried everything else, so she wasn't overloaded with her pack, but it was still more than she normally carries. It all worked out better than I thought, and she had an amazing time (still talking about it every day). A couple more shorter adventures and I'm sure she'll be chomping at the bit for something more epic :) Thanks for watching!
Great job Kiley! It looks like you had an AWESOME time. Great job setting up your own hammock. You look like a Spider-girl on those rocks. Your dad is pretty cool to take you on an over-night adventure.
It was actually Gull Pond -- checked all the boxes (short hike in, privy, beautiful pond, remote enough to enjoy but close enough to bail if necessary), and I would definitely head back out there again in the future!
@@JayMorrisonOutdoors definitely planning on an easy hike under 2 miles. We already walk about a mile around the neighborhood currently. He'll get to pick his own food and snacks. He's dead set on sleeping in a hammock like his dad (aka me) lol
Ever take someone out on their very first backpacking trip? I'd love to hear how it went in the comments below!

I'm pretty sure that's in the job description of being a parent ;)
Great video you guys!!!! Way to go DAD!!!!
Thanks so much!!

I know that area well, what a perfect place to do a first backpacking trip. She's got the hiking "bug" now!
Definitely

She's way cooler than I am ... and she'd tell you the same ;)
Ahhhh… great job! I remember my first trip with my three boys. I enjoyed it, and I think they will at least remember it
Excellent!
Great video. Looks like we both had the same thought. I Just posted my video of me and my son backpacking together for the first time as well. Haha
Awesome! I'm looking forward to checking out your adventure!!
I’m pretty familiar with the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area but, I don’t recognize this pond. Is it Goose Pond?
It was actually Gull Pond -- checked all the boxes (short hike in, privy, beautiful pond, remote enough to enjoy but close enough to bail if necessary), and I would definitely head back out there again in the future!
Looking forward to ripping my youngest son away from the playstation for a weekend and getting him in the woods with me.
Excellent plan! Just remember to pack some good snacks, don't hike too many miles, and relax .... it should be a great trip!

Yes!!! Hammock camping is how we were meant to sleep ... not rolling around in the dirt like filthy ground dwellers ;)
