Monarch butterflies lifespans vary from each generation, the longest generations lifespan being 8-9 months. So if we’re lucky he’ll be around for that long or maybe even a little longer :)
Not for this one, I don't expect him to last long. As a butterfly rearer, I would have humanely euthanised this one, because that deformity looks like Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. OE is a protozoan infection that causes weakness and deformity in step with protozoal load. The problem with wing replacing and releasing this butterfly is that it will now spread OE over caterpillar food sources and cause even worse load in them, or introduce OE to areas where it didn't exist before. Really sad, but releasing him was not the right decision for the local population.

Seriously. Amazing. These are the Monarchs that fly every year down to Mexico from Canada for the winter and breeding and the young come up here every spring. Their numbers are dwindling sharply . If you see milkweed in your garden...leave it that's the only thing they eat and with increased urbanization their food sources are dying out and they are too. This year I only saw one in the garden. Even 20 years ago we'd see at least 4-5. And growing up there were monarch butterflies almost all late summer.

This is awesome evidence to show learning in insects. He was clearly learning through trial and error how to fly with his prosthetic wing, and altering his style to try new techniques. This requires complex thought and memory. He could not figure out how to do this through "pre-preprogrammed" instinct as he had to figure out a new technique with which he could fly with as prosthetic. So cool that this process was documented, would love to see research on insect learning observing similar things.

@@thecornfieldiii2069 I'd help a fly too if I had the equipment. However, flies do present dangers butterflies do not, such as the transfer of bacteria from feedsites and laying eggs in (sometimes your) food. I personally don't kill flies, but I know why some people do and don't blame them.
@@thecornfieldiii2069 Even my 7 year old niece knows butterflies are important 🙄 They are pollinators. Like birds and bees they help pollinate flowers. They play a role in pest control by eating certain insects and weeds too. They're important for biodiversity and the ecosystem. And even if they didn't, what's wrong with being pretty and adding colour and beauty to your surroundings? These are insects we're talking about, not humans to debate appearances vs personality. My niece draws butterflies because they're beautiful. She has clothes and books and all sorts with butterflies because their beauty gives joy. She knows not to swat a fly or kill an ant just for the heck of it; they're fellow living creatures that we do not harm for no good reason. If a fly won't keep away from your food then fine chase it away. Even flies can be useful (environmentally) even if they're not pretty. And even if butterflies were ugly they would still matter for all the work they do.
Amazing. With the time this must have taken, this Monarch had to have been a last generation, the ones that migrate and can live up to 9 months. This past summer I had one that would visit my hummingbird feeders, all throughout the day. He'd land on me from time to time, sit there flexing his wings. Now he's gone, headed south. I miss him already.
I did something similar to a butterfly when I was young in elementary school. We found a butterfly on the playground during recess and the top part of his wing, the same part that was damaged on this butterfly, was snapped in half. I raised many monarch caterpillars from eggs to butterflies and it kinda hit home for me. I found the kids who always liked to catch bugs, they had a bug cage. We took him inside and it became our goal to help this butterfly (to the teachers’ dismay) we eventually ended up doing something similar to what this lady did to keep his wing together. We gave him fresh flowers and had him fly some test flights and he seemed to do well, so we let him go. Our method seemed to work because he flew off. I think the teachers were prepared to tell us the butterfly wouldn’t make it but surprised when it took off from my hand. Best memory from elementary school. I’ll never forget how happy everyone was to see that butterfly fly off
The fact she named it Nemo- Bucky makes it so relatable since Nemo from finding Nemo grew up with a deformed fin and Bucky from Captain America got a prosthetic limb after losing his arm
Imagine not knowing anything about this story, and then one day just seeing a butterfly land on a bush with a feather where it's wing should be. That kind of experience, I have to imagine, would be incredibly bizarre. Something you've likely never seen before, and probably will never see again, and the events leading up to it, unless you by chance stumble across this video, are a complete mystery, even if you know there has to be a story there. To you, it's just a little miracle, a little blip of an event with an unknowable cause rooted in the deep interconnectedness of life. Something happened, someone did something to make this impossibly strange thing in front of you, but unless luck is very much on your side, you'll never know exactly what, or why.

This restored my faith in humanity. If people can be so kind enough to help a butterfly with a missing wing, which can be a common thing, then that is just unbelievable to me. I sincerely hope this person continues to help animals, no matter the size.
Butterfly's life is so short. Normal people would have thought, why bother when he is just gonna live for some days. But angels like U, who know the value of life even for days, exists ❤️. I'm glad he found you😇👼
Perhaps to a butterfly a day seems like ten years. Maybe even a butterfly sitting on a flower with the sun shining on its wings can feel joyful in it's tiny heart.
As extraordinary as the woman being prepared - and able - to repair a butterfly wing with a prosthetic was the fact that the butterfly learned to fly with it. Although feathers and butterfly scales are both made of chitin (the same as our fingernails), butterfly wings are way thinner, and the scales can be accidentally rubbed off by handling, sufficiently to impair flying. The prosthetic wing must have been considerably heavier (in relative terms) and thus the insect would have had to completely relearn how to fly - something that was instinctive - with this new imbalance. In addition, the forewing, like all the wings, has a network of microscopic veins fed through a single vein where the wing attaches. These were obviously severed, so the butterfly also has to learn how to flap that one forewing minus the control and sensory feedback that would have allowed it to fly. That a butterfly even has that capability for such rehabilitation is qute astonishing to me.

Monarch butterflies lifespans vary from each generation, the longest generations lifespan being 8-9 months. So if we’re lucky he’ll be around for that long or maybe even a little longer :)
Oh wow I thought it was much shorter
Not for this one, I don't expect him to last long. As a butterfly rearer, I would have humanely euthanised this one, because that deformity looks like Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. OE is a protozoan infection that causes weakness and deformity in step with protozoal load.
The problem with wing replacing and releasing this butterfly is that it will now spread OE over caterpillar food sources and cause even worse load in them, or introduce OE to areas where it didn't exist before. Really sad, but releasing him was not the right decision for the local population.
@@LevadeNZ I’m curious, how does one humanely euthanize a butterfly?

This is awesome evidence to show learning in insects. He was clearly learning through trial and error how to fly with his prosthetic wing, and altering his style to try new techniques. This requires complex thought and memory. I’ll never forget how happy everyone was to see that butterfly fly off

so can we sew many feathers and glue it to our arm as a wing.. i think we can fly like that.. i will give it a try btw.. 😂😂😂
how the hell
@@t.a.p4554 butterflies are aerial creatures we are not 🙂
That was the plan
