Thats not the exercise yard by the gates. I was an inmate there many years ago. That yard at 4.37 into the video was a courtyard where the prison vans would park in. Exercise yards were to the back of the castle. The front partion of the castle was admin buildings for Lancaster city council, not the whole castle was used as a jail.
Got to hand it to the normans They really knew where to site a castle A magnificent river to the back Built on top of a massive hill Try attacking that With bow and arrow Ps the Romans excavated the site 1000 years earlier

I worked there 1993-95. It was used as the exercise yard then.
