Nice one, and good to see a part of CA most folks never get to. A trivia bit about Brookings, OR: it's the closest town to where, in 1942, a Japanese floatplane launched from the submarine I-25 made two attacks with incendiary bombs with the intent of starting large forest fires in the Pacific NW. Fortunately, heavy rains a few days earlier meant that the fires never got far. The Japanese pilot traveled to Brookings several times in a gesture of reconciliation, and his Samurai Sword and other artifacts from the episode are on display in Brookings. These two flights were the only Axis air attacks on the Mainland U.S. in WW II.

U.S. 101 used to extend past San Diego, all the way to the Mexican border----a distance in California of nearly 1000 miles! 101 was cut-back to the Boyle Heights Interchange in L.A. in 1964, when that section was replaced by Interstate 5.
By the way, the other junction of 2 U.S. highways is 395 and 6, in Bishop. A lot of people might not catch that one, as it is in the back country of the eastern Sierras, near the Nevada border. The real irony is that California once had well over 20 such junctions----too numerous and common to get an accurate count. The U.S. numbers included 6, 40, 50, 60, 66, 70, 80, 91, 95, 97, 99, 101, 199, 299, 399, and 466. (did I miss any?) U.S. 6 once extended all the way to San Pedro, from Cape Cod, Mass----making it the longest U.S. highway, at the time. For some reason though, the State of California did not like U.S. Highways, and decide to supersede as many as possible. Many folks wish that the state had kept them, for historic value.

Yes, California is a HUGE state in the north-south direction.
The northern border is at 42 degrees North latitude, which is even with Chicago, the southernmost point of Canada, most of the New York/Pennsylvania border, and Cape Cod.
The southern border is at 32-and-a-half degrees North latitude, which is even with the southern suburbs of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Shreveport (Louisiana), the far northern suburbs of Jackson (Mississippi), the northern suburbs of Montgomery (Alabama), Columbus (Georgia), and the southern tip of South Carolina.

Seeing US 101 in CA become a freeway for the last time was a bit heartbreaking- as it won't be a freeway again until near it's Northern end in Washington State. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see you continue your journey of the highway into the Beaver State
BTW, to answer your question about junctions between 2 US routes in CA. The only other such junction besides the 101/199 one in the state is the 395/6 one in Bishop.

You must have done this video a while ago! The bridge just north of Crescent City is being rebuilt, and there is a temporary bridge now, and the car dealer in Brookings (on the right side), has been closed for a long time. I live in Harbor, which is the south side of the Chetco River (north side is Brookings proper), and I work at the casino you passed in Smith River. I have driven this road hundreds of times. Only wish it would be as fast as this video!

2:48 Kyle, US 101 and US 199 did connect with each other in Del Norte County. The other intersection of US routes is US 6 ending with US 395 in Bishop, CA in Inyo County. About that, since 1964, California changed US and state routes as Interstate took over. US 6 used to end in Long Beach in L.A. County at a roundabout along the PCH. Therefore, it used to pass through Los Angeles via Figueroa St and it also passes through Burbank and Glendale.

I visited Crescent City 9 months ago and @7:00 mark, you see a giant ship on the left in your video. It was known as the Ship Ashore Motel, as there was a motel in the back. The ship was a gift shop. The motel was also a site where 5 murders happened, most recently in 2008. I checked out the now abandoned motel and walked the premises.

Just a quick correction: Highway 101 in Oregon does leave the coast and go inland in two sections - first just south of Coos Bay, and the second just south of Tillamook.

Drive it in a Jeep, its 48mi but will take you half a day as most of it is
    slow going but WAY fun.

I enjoy your videos but wish you would not speed up the film speed so fast so that we can enjoy the scenery more. I have watched several of your videos of areas that I have been and enjoy the memories of those areas. Thanks for what you do.
