When I have a lot of leader line in shallow water
The rubber bands that jack traps sells are on the bottom of my trap
I loop the mono’’ line to it it stops it from floating up

Over here in the Rockies we call them pop-ups. Easiest way to make one is with a cut of mop handle and coat hanger. I've caught thousands of fish that way.

I'm sure Jack Traps work great and help the Maine economy. But I would put my $15 Polar Tip-ups (now only $10) up against your Jack Traps any day (not one has failed in over 40 years). Much lighter. Much smaller (you won't need a pack mule to haul them). Won't freeze up. Won't rust. Won't rot. Won't splinter. Won't biodegrade. Won't twist. Won't shrink. Won't swell. Fold easily at the end of the day (no ice to knock off the wood). No revarnishing needed (won't pollute the water). Spools have a small wind-up crank and hold several hundred yards of line. Unlikely they'll get stolen since their so cheap. Flag tension can be set so light that a gnat would have a hard time wiping its own butt! I have fished alongside professional fishing guides and caught so many togue and salmon by lunch they would leave because they were discouraged. True story. I am not a Polar Tip-up salesperson. I just like to catch fish. Now I have combined a short, open-faced reel/pole with a Polar Tip-Up (let you know how it turns out). I will give that if I run out of firewood and was freezing to death, your wooden Jack Traps would come in handy. Or if I got in a fight with a Mainer. The Mainer might laugh at my Polar Tip-up. Though I almost got shot over a hole. The same hole through which I caught the largest fish of the tournament. You guessed it. On a Polar Tip-Up. (Disclaimer: Polar Tip-Ups and those who use them are not bulletproof).

They are great until you get 2 ft of slush and snow on top of the ice and you reel doesn’t reach the water or you have to dig out the snow so much that you can’t tell when you get a flag.

@@mainetroutwhisperer Having ice fished for over 50 years and used Polar Tip Ups for over 40, I've never had either of those two problems. If you have enough slush, I suppose it can be a challenge. I would just drill in dryer places or pile the slush and let it dry. Late March can see widespread slush, but by then it's so warm your traps are unlikely to freeze in. I have the Polar Tip-up flag extensions. They telescope out up to 38 inches. Look like they would work great, but quite frankly, I've never needed them. Whatever works best for you. There are so many great tip-ups available now. I used to use alder branches. But having tried (and even designed) many, the Polar Tip Up is unique in the many different combinations of tension adjustment you have available, which makes it difficult for finicky fish to steal your bait. If used properly, they just catch more fish (IMHO). Why spend all that money getting out there, freeze your tail off, have a slow a.s day, catch no fish, and then try to convince others you had a great time? "The cedars smelled otherworldly, and the sky was so blue!" Ice camping, gathering firewood, drone flying, cooking moose steak over the grill, showing off your gadgets, while sharing tall fish tales can no doubt complement your experience. But I'm there to catch fish.

@@capturehishonor9292 I gotcha. Let’s agree to disagree. To each his own.
Here’s my opinion: I think the only time they work well is early ice. Low profile and you can see them alright. Later in the season, if you have a lot of snow and ice you have to dig out your holes just to get the reel to sit in the water, then you can’t even see the trap. Especially if you’re doing some lake trout sets very far away from each other. The telescopic flag is nice, but a lot of them don’t have that. People going 100 mph across the lake can’t even seen them if they are sitting down in a hole. I’ve had people hit them before. A lot of the polars I’ve seen have tiny spools as well. For lake trout fishing deep…not good.. I know you can get larger spools, but I’ll stick with my jacks until something better comes out (and it will). I don’t use a pack basket to carry mine. Just toss them in a bag. They way I have them built, they have a hair trigger. I’ve beaten the crap out of mine and they still preform flawlessly. I’m not a jack traps fan boy at all. I would certainly try something else if I thought there was a better option.

Hey man. I just bought a set of jack traps and feel like the reel is a bit loose and wiggly. A little noisy too when you peel line off the reel. Do you think this is normal with jacks? Is there a reason why the reel comes with that wiggle room?

I basically use the same setup on my trout and salmon traps except I use a longer leader of 10# flouro from 5-6’ just to cover those finicky salmon. Quick strikes or single trebles for pike.

So I'm going through RUclips trying to see if anyone's got the same pop-ups that we use here in the Rockies. The papas we got here in the Rockies are so much simpler and cheaper to use. I may have to patent them It may be start selling them. All these other contraptions are so complicated and way too sophisticated for a simple fisherman. When you go ice fishing it shouldn't be this complicated.
