It’s weird they more applaud her resourcefulness and explain how people need help, but they just let this woman walk off into the sunset and she didn’t receive care, and they tell you for the 2000th day in a row how there’s a housing crisis.
If you live in CA, you know the homeless fix efforts are just ways to grab tax payer money while increasing the 'need for a fix'.
No one who is able to wants to fix the housing crisis. That goes for the Right and the Left. The housing crisis is the modern day version of making it illegal for peasants to read. If they can't read, they can't rebel. If we're too worried about paying rent and being homeless, we can't stand up to our "leaders".
100% agree!
What's your address so we can send her your way?
How do you know she didn't receive care? I'm sure she is getting stamps and everything else. She is just trying to survive.
"we never want to see someone break the law in order to have housing" idk that's a moral grey area to me. Shelter is a basic physiological need so... But speaking of breaking the law, it seems like it should be breaking the law to charge such exorbitant prices for houses and rent. At least that's the case here in Canada
They sure don't mind housing illegal immigrants breaking the law. They get housed no problem
You people with cartoon photos telling me you live at mom's house keep saying that..and then I show you listings right across Canada MORE than affordable. Then you don't reply lol. What did the interior look like!!!!? Most of the story went into a different direction, what had she built? Did she hook up electricity? Running water?
There was a mention of a heater, so probably electricity. I've been there and I remember a power cord hanging from the roof randomly one day, but I chalked it up to someone doing repairs at the time. Running water might be hard, perhaps she used bottled water.
Contractors noticed her extension cord and followed it to her living area. She had a coffee maker, so I think she brought up bottled water.
“The woman was able to get electricity through a power cord plugged into an outlet on the roof”

“We never want to see someone breaking the law in order to have housing.” It’s sad that the housing crisis is so bad that people have to worry about getting in trouble just for finding shelter. It shouldn’t even be considered breaking the law. It’s you do what you got to do.
True, I agree!

I wonder what would happen with housing if the millions of illegals were kicked out of the housing market thus freeing up... millions of houses/apartments.

Or the store should hire her as a component of the worlds’ first Living Sign. - she can stay living within the sign permanently, and her job is to attract customers, somewhat people who wear those sandwich board signs for local customers on the street.
They could have at least shown the area where this lady was living. I was wondering how she knew there was an area inside the store sign where she could live in the first place and how to gain access to it?
IKR, I would like to know the complete story.
I would like to know why they didn’t take her someplace to get situated! Just saying the police didn’t know where she went is pathetic!

What was the first sign that she was homeless?
Do they have to evict her legally or can they just kick her out?
Squatters rights 😂
yea how about a story on the lady
they have to file a lawsuit for copyright infringement because of sign ;)
I think they can just evict since its not classified as a residential dwelling and she couldn't get mail there.
@xeon it's a commentary on the situation in Florida and other places before the aggressive political crackdown. If it were in Florida not manh months ago would have required a court injunction to evict. Hence the term "squatters rights," as well as in some euro countries too

People of America mustn't be this individual and indifferent towards one another. Taking care one another is a must. When a family member reaches 18, he or she leaves the parents for a new house. That is where the distance gets created between parents and kids. Parents raise kids till 18, but when parents reach old age, kids throw them under the bus or send them old Nursing home. It is sad
My parents chose to have me knowing they would be taking care of me for 18 years. It's not on me to take care of them when they are old. They've had their whole life to be financially responsible and prepare for retirement.
I believe that's what's called "unfettered self-interest", like in Atlas Shrugged. It goes hand in hand with the whole "Greed is good" mantra.
I still flipping hate Michael Douglas because of that movie.
If she wasn't bothering anyone or damaging anything i can't see why someone wouldn't just look the other way. Why is everyone a karen now.
Better yet. Help her find safe4 housing!
Here are the reasons why that I can think of, and bear in mind, I don't agree with these and would rather see her left alone as well...legal liability and theft of electricity. Just the world we live in.
Hope she is safe and is able to get permanent shelter, hopefully a house.

Housing is too expensive
It's not lack of housing..it's the outrageous costs with rent
Ive volunteered half of my life at these "shelters," and the thing that's so utterly irritating is that these "do gooders" get on these shows and talk about "shelters" people can go to, but shelters are disgusting petrie dishes full of filth and disease, and are nothing more than INTERNMENT CAMPS for the homeless. It's no wonder people would rather sleep in the street or live in a sign than catch tuberculosis or hepatitis, or flu or or or... at a shelter. We call them "shelters" bc it sounds better than "internment camp." Every person deserves their OWN PLACE TO LIVE with heat, a/c, and running water even if it's just a studio or tiny house.
Nah bro. You cant come at me about housing but then not show me these conditions she was living in. Right now im imagining a exquisite estate.

Some of the affordable housing problem could be solved with changes to local building ordinances. They generally don't allow for small homes that are adequate for singles or couples and therefore affordable. They want all housing to be big. Be honest, large apartment complexes are built to be money makers, so will never be affordable, unless subsidized.
I would like to know how she came and went for a year without anyone noticing, not to mention moving furniture up there 🤔.
I want to know the whole story too!
where did she poop?

Prices for rent and houses so high in America, people think this mysterious lady is a hero!
1) That's kind of horrifying 😅 2) At least she was safe, and there are people that can help her... and 3) The US is definitely in a crisis of that, and they really need to fix that.
It's funny how no one ever says "_____" has an airbnb shortage..
SHOW US THE SIGN SHE LIVED IN
Google the story. A few versions show the actual sign.
There are a LOT of working people who are struggling & one paycheck away from asking her to borrow a cup of coffee. It's horrible that this country are allowing the gas to stay high just because, crued oil prices have been dropped! They're allowing rent to ne raised astronomically, food prices. The government is allowing this, what are we supposed to do?
Was the sign lit? If so, how did no one notice her silhouette? And how can a person sleep in a brightly lit sign? So many questions!
Lemme get this straight..... It takes minutes to get a squatter out of a business.... but it takes Months & court orders to get a squatter out of someones private home? Business gets police assistance.... but when it happens to a private homeowner.... they refuse to remove them ? That's Beyond F'd up..... Squatters do NOT have rights when it's not their property! Laws need to be changed/addressed Immediately....
I just read this story and had to look it up! At first, i thought it was a light up type of sign, but judging from this sign, it looks as if she was living in an attic!
I drove through Grand Rapids the other day, and the amount of homeless people on the streets was baffling. Not only are they not safe, but God knows not every homeless man or woman is a saint. I pray for everyone in the area.
One of the problems with the "housing" that they offer people is that when you live there you basically have no freedoms at all. It's not a "home", it's just a crash pad with very strict curfews and rules. Most people hate these places and will purposely live on the street rather than give up their independence and be treated like a child. Not to even mention all the people trying to psychoanalyze you all the time. No smoking, no radio playing, lights out! Just like prison.
The woman was right, she was trying to retain what little personal freedoms she had left.
The rent was cheap. Used to be, in the old days, when a store row was built downtown on a main street, there were upper floors over the stores that were professional offices and rooming rentals. Maybe we need to get back to that. Building codes could require places like Walmart and others to build a floor of inexpensive living space above the stores. The problem, would be allow good , quiet tennents like the homeless lady here, and keeping the criminals, drug addicts and crazies out.
I support this woman and will vote her into congress by any means above or below board. I also know my next move ;)
The homelessness has literally tripled…
Why would someone feel ashamed for needing help? That’s stupidity. Everyone needs help sometimes.
Michigan has a housing shortage!? Everywhere does! Not just Michigan!
At least she had a roof over her head.
True!
Definitely a "sign" of the times we're living in.
i cant even afford an apartment. im disabled and im having to rent my old room from my parents. the wait list for "affordable housing" is over five years. and even then theres only a small number of locations available and not enough for those of us who need it
The unfortunate woman was no danger to society, living in the sign. I hope her life vastly improves. Respect from Ireland.
For a split second, I thought 0:43 was the inside of the sign
I guess the homeless shelters or encampments were just too dangerous for this woman. She couldn't afford a hotel or motel.
These people are all talking about "we need to solve the crisis" but did any of them offer the woman housing?

It is my understanding that folk from Yorkshire are unconventionally resourceful.
That’s very resourceful for her, and the safest way for her to.
I’m sure she had already tried the other options but nothing helped her and found that it’s the only way to make her safe.
Sometimes I wonder if there’s other places I heard all kinds of things I think there might be someone living in my roof since I heard a lot of creaking and there’s so many homeless around here in my neighborhood.
This story deserved the Mtv Cribs treatment NOT the usual storyline that we already know about.
No way she wasn’t stealing groceries every night
Oh, im sure she'll either go back or find a bigger better SIGN in her life.
I'm glad they didn't press charges against her. I hope she's found another place to live in that's proper. This country and it's housing crisis is really getting out of hand. I hope our country does better at housing people, making living affordable for all.
Gotta give it up to her, I've slept rough from time to time and this is inventive.
Okay but what sign? The one above the store? Like an attic? Or the one out front that's like 2-3 feet wide? They could've shown us, it's like they missed the pinnacle of this story.
They should've gave her a 30 days notice. That would be cool
they keep showing us how horrible people live in these horrible places but don't explain how the govt has made it impossible to get a place to stay, unless you don't work.
Ummmm, not sure the unless you don’t work is true. Many people who work are still technically homeless, or unable to find affordable housing.
My brother in law lived inside a Hugh sign by the side of the turn pike for 2 weeks ,he had gotten a job across the highway in a rest area . He worked there until he got on his feet to get a place to live. Got a few promotions until he could buy a car & drown down to Texas & work on oil rigs fora few years.
There’s two guys buying and renovating homes near Detroit. Oh shelter’s can be nasty or so experience tells me.

Nobody got shot and nobody went to jai! Amazing.
Police peppered her with questions but were unsuccessful. She only speaks sign language.
Not surprised, I worked retail, and a lot of the roof edges have large facades, and the sighs have electricity. Perfect spaces to live. Though, if I was living up there, I would try to patch roof where possible to avoid detection
Story has nothing to do with the title. Woman lives in a sign. There’s a housing shortage. How about how does she gain access without being detected. How big is the space? Why does this space exist? How did she come to find it? How did they catch her.
