Quake has done the full circle. In 2000s to early 2010s players seeked to improve the graphics of Quake and made some remarkable source ports with very intensive lightning effects, high-poly models and high-res textures. Then focus started to shift from this graphical fidelity back to level design - these HD-graphics source ports were looking cool but weren't handling maps that well, especially not large ones made by the level design community. So they developed ports such as Quakespasm which were classic-looking but removed the engine's limitations when it comes to designing maps. Thus they enabled massive sprawling levels that will take you 1-2 hours to finish, being as long and complex as an entire episode - crammed into one level.

I find myself playing Quake every once and then... I love it, i'm replaying it in these days on my steam deck. The first levels of EP1 are iconic and weird at the same time how smooth is the transition between soldiers to medieval knights and beasts and spirits =P
I think it's hard to translate the same setting (and color palette) in a modern game without falling into banality. I'm going to play Dusk, Amid Evil and Forgive me father, next.

Such a simple game but the essentials are near perfect. I remember getting my first ever 3D card just to play Quake back on release. But the real revolution was mouselook, crazy to believe we used to play FPS games using arrowkeys and auto aim!

    • @herbderbler1585
      @herbderbler1585 Год назад +1

Oh man, I remember that transition. All through the original Doom 1&2 years I played strictly with keyboard. Coming from Nintendo controllers, trudging around with only arrow keys just seemed like the obvious setup. I remember thinking the strafe button was such a revolutionary idea, being able to line up against monster hordes horde and then switch from turning to dancing side-to-side like a player on a foosball table.
Then I got Quake, and watching the demo that played during the menu was what first made me think, "HOW THE HECK ARE THEY MOVING LIKE THAT?" I started poking through the options and discovered you could play with the mouse. It took me a few minutes to figure it out and realize what I'd just discovered, but the difference was like night turning to day. Absolutely transformative. I realized I'd been stumbling around on crutches up to that point, and now I had what felt like a superpower. Easily the most stunning revelation I've ever felt in games.

As great as the remaster is in terms of content, it falls a bit short in terms of some questionable design changes and technical inaccuracies that a lot of die hard Quake players have been quick to point out.
First off the bat, a lot of the levels have been recompiled to have different lighting, even in classic mode, as well as pointlessly changing textures and their alignment around. This has resulted in the game feeling a lot brighter than the original game does out of the box.
But the biggest change was to the game's Nightmare mode. Enemy behavior was completely changed and the player's health capped at 50. This is something that should be relegated to a mod, not a remaster.
Lastly the biggest problem that exists in the remaster is physics. Quake's movement physics is something that stands at the very core of its legacy, and is one of the defining traits of classic FPS games.
This would be all well and fine if these were fixed or addressed in updates, but Nightdive has not gotten around to doing that. I don't think that's really their fault, as its up to the people who contracted them (id Software and Bethesda in this case) to let them keep working on improving the experience as much as they can. Of course there are surely a multitude of other factors, but I think they could've done a better job with preserving the classic experience.
This is not to say I dislike Nightdive, I love their work on remasters of Doom 64, Powerslave, Strife, and Turok, and I'm also very excited for their upcoming System Shock remake. I think they are a very capable studio when you give them the time they need to finish their work.

There's already been modern reboots for both Doom and Wolfenstein and it's about time Bethesda and ID Software do one for Quake in it's Lovecraftian inspired universe from the original. No nitpicks on the Strogg but cybernetically enhanced enemies are overused in games as a whole and Quake 1's enemies were very unique for the time and still so by this day. Quake 1 is in fully 3D what Wolfenstein was in 2.5D being grandfathers of first person shooters during different eras of graphics Wolfenstein 3D being so with sprites and Quake 1 being so with models. I have the remastered Quake on Steam with it being my 10th game on Steam to set foot on my Perfect Games list for unlocking all the achievements on out of my 26 total Perfect Games that I'm currently rocking. Just like the recent remaster of Quake II, its excellent. I got both games originally for Christmas just after they were both out, so 1996 and 1997. Quake really did bring something new at the time when it was Duke 3d and Doom. Quake II just improved it. Both games are classic and the only games from the PC golden era (1995-2002) that have been constantly re-installed ever couple of years. I am hoping there is a new revival of these games not seen since the early 2000's. There is still a modding scene but not as big as it once was, especially for Quake II.

I loved Scourge of Armagon, but Dissolution of Eternity just felt very forgettable back when it originally came out. I found myself struggling with boredom to even finish it. When I played it again all these years later, my opinion didn't really change. It was a nice pack of new maps, but none of them really stood out, and the new weapon set was also kinda meh. Not a terrible idea, but in execution most of them just made everything feel bloated and redundant. Only the cluster grenades and multi-rockets were actually useful.
On the other hand, the NEW expansions were extremely good. Very memorable, fun and challenging and they really pushed the limits of what could be done with this old game. I suppose technically it's not the same game engine anymore, but it sure felt like the genuine article. They did a great job and gave me some of the most fun I've had with an FPS in years. The only thing I don't like about Nightdive's Kex engine is it's performance. It's fine if you have a good computer, but if you have a lower spec machine or an average laptop (something you'd expect Quake to run perfectly fine on), performance can be sub par. The 3rd party source ports like QuakeSpasm and Ironwail are light years better in this regard. A map that would give you, say, 60fps on the Kex engine, would give you like 400fps on Ironwail, while looking exactly the same.

I know the industry made them trendy because they're out of ideas and out of talent. And it's good to be making money off games that way more talented people created in the past. The Dead Space remake drove my disbelief over the edge and I wouldn't be surprised by anything anymore. Makes me wonder how far off games getting a second remake is.

But other than enemy AI changes, there's no difference between Hard and Nightmare.
The remake adds a 50 HP cap on Nightmare (if above, it slowly drops to 50 HP), and eliminates the rapid attacks for enemies.

The only thing I didn’t like is on nightmare your help is permanently set to 50 instead 100. I know it’s supposed to be a challenge but for preservation purposes I’m not a fan of and it’s way harder too. But it’s not as enjoyable because of this increased difficulty.

The 2 new campaigs are nice but all the other changes Night Dive did to the game are god awful. Honestly the remaster is really nothing more than a massive insult to the original. From changing all the console commands, a very buggy menu, input lag, and how badly they fucked up the multiplayer component ND really couldn't have done a worse job with this so called "remaster" if they tried.

@@Bunkerknacker_Retro-Nostalgie Remember that Copper is not part of the Kex Engine, is another sourceport of the vanilla engine. Even though, inside the Kex Engine Quake you need to download Copper to play Underdark Overbright (included as a single download). If the Nightmare difficulty is just "copper" then is not needed to play the addon.
