Bonjour Marie-Anne, I like the classic 'peacoat' very much and I had one many years ago when I was much younger ..... in my late teens early twenties and certainly grew out of it! Mais, une petite histoire, in the mid- eighties, I found a magnificent heavy coat, beautiful subtle pattern, my favorite colors, almost had a slight American Indian pattern, that I fell in love with as soon as I saw it. It was very expensive at that time, ( Sak's Fifth Ave.) still remember $460 ! But I loved, loved, loved it, and needed a warm coat so I bought it on my charge and was made in France!!!! When I told my French mother, she said jokingly, why didn't I buy her one!! I said Ma, so expensive to buy 2 coats??!!... and she laughed and said she would look at it the next week but she knew she would love it. Said Ma, how could I buy 2, plus don't know if you will love it....she said she would. So without telling her, I ran back to the store to get her the coat as a surprise for Christmas, ( and I knew they only had 1 in her size when I left),....so I was able to go right back to the store, ( Sak's Fifth Ave. ) as quickly as possible and my in husband and I gave her one the next month for Christmas. She loved it also soon as she saw it, but said wouldn't it be strange to wear the same coat at the same time....we went out alot together, especially for occasions and so I said I didn't care because we happened to both love it so much...so what if sometimes we wore it together!! It's funny, because there were actually several occasions when we wore it together, ha! We didn't care. Those coats got so much use, they were actually up to the knees, and I still wear mine, 3 decades later. My Mom wore it in winters the rest of her life, so now I have both, she was only 1 size larger. If I've gained some weight, I can wear hers. One never knows how life turns out. Every winter when I take the coats out, I think of the story and am so glad I was able to buy us both those coats :))
Hi Susan and Marie-Anne, I really enjoyed reading your story, Susan. I was close to my mother too. She was like a sister and best friend to me too, as I go older. My mom didn't have a lot to spend on clothes, but she loved beautiful things and I always delighted in buying her nice gifts -- especially clothing and accessories. We used to borrow each other's clothes at times too. I used to love wearing tops, shoes, etc that she'd worn. I'd feel as if I was wrapped in her goodness and her love. Thanks for so much for sharing your story.
I have a petite histoire too. My mother was also French and her birthday would be this week, so i've been thinking of her a lot recently and your story really struck a chord with me. Toward the end of my mother's life when she was very ill, I bought her a beautiful nightgown and robe from Saks Fifth Avenue. It was a very beautiful soft pale pink silk with an exquisite white lace and it was made in France. It was extremely expensive and I knew she might not have much time to wear it but it was so beautiful I couldn't not get it for her. She thought it was absolutely gorgeous and was so pleased. There's some sadness to the story though. She never got to wear it. In fact the tags were still in the box with it, when she passed away. My mother had left me all her things (clothes, accessories, china, silver, etc) but when she was ill and about to die, my father found out and after she passed away, he managed to get his hands on her things and sold everything. She had left my father when I was very young because of domestic abuse.( He was a very cruel man with a violent temper.) So, I don't have the things she left me, including the beautiful gown and robe. But I have the memories of her beauty, grace, intelligence and love and am so thankful for that. And thank you Susan, for your story and bringing back the bittersweet memories of my own story. xox, Susan S.
Susan Shafer Isn't that something that we both had French mothers and that we both liked buying them special items that we would see and think to buy them for them like clothes, jewelry, etc and that we would share them too. My Mom and I were very close also....like we were best friends. She did have many years to enjoy "our" coat. I'm so sorry that your mother didn't have a chance to wear that beautiful gift you gave her and even though I don't know you, it makes me feel bad and actually angry that your father took the things your mother wanted you to have. But, you're right, he can't take the beautiful memories that you have of time spent with your mother and what a special woman she was. Thank you for sharing your story about what a special woman your mother was. It touches my heart too. My Mom 's gone now almost 9 yrs. and I can't believe it. It's so hard now with the holidays and must be harder for you since your mother's birthday was around the same time. And I just thought, they both named us the same names, Susan!. Feel we are kindred spirits in a way. Please take good care. May I ask where do you live? I live in New Jersey but grew up in New York City. Hope you enjoy your holidays.
#Marie-Anne Lecoeur Thank you so much for taking the time to read "ma petite histoire", and the story of Susan Shafer as well....... what unusually similar stories of our mothers and right down to our same names! It seems that our mothers had a very natural French chic style as well ! I enjoy your videos... I also think the presentation of the items with the pretty tissue paper and boxes is important when giving or receiving a gift !
Thank you for the reminder to ask yourself if you will love and use an item next year and years later! I have found myself actually talking myself out of buying something based on this technic. It doesn't have to be apparel, it applies to everything💚
Good Morning, Marie-Anne, I would love to see a video about clothing you no longer keep in your wardrobe: what youdonate and what you throw away, and the reasons therefor (wrong color or size, dislike color, stain, etc.) Also, I'd enjoyseeing how you care for (launder, hand-wash, dry clean) your clothing, and how often. Many thanks.
I think, even your sons would love to inherit that coat Marie-Anne! Could you do a 'draw my life' sometime, or a chat about your life, your childhood, your jobs, family etc - it would be great to know more about you as a person 😘
I love classic pieces they are truly ageless and timeless. I own a Peacoat that was once part of my uniform.(I was once in the US navy). 10 years since I was discharged from the service I still own it, and I wear it every winter. I really think it's a good think to ask yourself will I like, and wear it years from now? great video as always!
Lovely tips......I agree with your suggestions and have a couple of extra questions I ask myself now that I, too, am becoming more aware of purchases, quality and having a curated wardrobe. 1) How will the fabric hold up under use and wear (washing, cleaning, daily use, etcc)? Preferences for me include all natural fibers for environmental and personal reasons....silk, cotton, merino wool, cashmere, linen etc. 2) How versatile is the garment for me and my lifestyle? How many outfits can I make with it? How many seasons will it cross? Will the color fit in with my existing wardrobe? Love you channel...
Hello again, Marie-Anne, This request is not fashion-related, but I would love to see a vlog about what you eat in a day (French fare) and/or what dinners (evening meals) you eat in a week (again, typical French fare.) Thanks so much!
I totally agree. After many years, I have finally convinced myself to stop being a cheapskate and invest in things long term. I thought I was saving money by buying cheaper items but the low quality made it a waste.
Wonderful video on classic style. I currently have two leather bucket bags, a camel coat and a cashmere blazer, all which are between 20 - 30 years old, in rotation for the fall/winter. They still look fabulous!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the navy peacoat. My favorite one had a hood! Have loved them for 40 years! If I EVER find another of good quality, I will buy it in a heartbeat❣Your channel is such a refreshing change - focusing on "classic style" instead of passing whims! Thank you Marie-Anne!
Hi Marie-Anne, I'd love to see your ENTIRE wardrobe -- or if it's too much for one video, maybe a series, such as one video on outerwear, one on tops or knits, dresses, etc. It would be so interesting-- as well as informative and inspirational. I always enjoy your videos so much. xo, Sue
Merci, Marie-Anne. You are exactly right. I look at my wardrobe, and I see some items bought on impulse, without thought, which I really don't like, and rarely wear. It makes such sense to ask whether one will still love an item in five years. It really is the question to ask, and I will ask it, henceforth! I love your peacoat: it is so smart, and elegant. Thank you, as always, for such good advice.
I really love a caban, I had one from H&M for 15 years, till it almost fell apart. Now I have a new one from Paul Smith and I wear it all the time. You are so right, the classics stay forever in our wardrobe, they never go out of style and I never get enough of them.
Hi Marie Anne, Love your coat !!!! I have one very similar, it is 2O yrs old, M&S Wool and Cashmere in the colour navy. This coat look's as good now as it did then, it comes out ever Autumn. 😘😘
I love your coat. I do love classics and often ask myself how long I will love a piece before buying. I also evaluate pieces that I have in my closet that I still Love after ten years so that I can make other good purchases like those.
I was attending a lunch and noticed a young girl dressed very fashionably. However on a closer look it was easy to see that her trousers were very badly made but she told me they were very in and not very expensive,so now I understand the old saying "buy cheap buy twice". So I take care when shopping nowadays.
This is my honor to be the first viewer. Sunset now here . Many people will have a fun time this evening because Helloween is getting more popular here. Wish you a pleasant weekend.
Thank you so much for your sharing! I love classic style . It never out of date. Do like the coat and the top you wearing today. Would please kindly tell what brands ? Could you please introduce some classic clothes of France ? Appreciate it !
Good point. I think if I ask myself how I will feel, about the item I’m considering purchasing, in a few years, I would make wiser clothing choices. Then I would have the right amount of quality mix and match pieces rather than a closet full of so so pieces. Thank you.
That's a very beautiful coat and I bet it looks *amazing* on you. Can you do a lookbook video of styling that coat, or do you have a video already? You always do such an amazing job modeling the outfits you show in the outfit videos.
Since I am age 69, is it still worth it to buy clothes that will last 30 yrs? I’ve always bought quality, but have been doubting spending big $$ now that I am retired. I’ve got to admit when I look at less expensive items, the quality, fit and colors turn me off.
The Jkt is a Classic Shape and ageless and good dressed down or up i think, over a classic dress ! too, thats how i would wear it and so lovely : ) .....
Oh, Marie-Anne, I enjoy all your videos. I really wanted to see you wear the new pea coat, though! It was disappointing to wait through the video for you to model it for us - but it didn’t happen! I would like to know what you would pack for a warm weather holiday. Thanks.
I have two coats that belonged to my mother in law. When she passed away they were handed down to me. They are so well made. They were made and bought in Europe in the 50’s and they are still beautiful today. They are pieces that I treasure.
Marie -Anne, do you think young French women operate the same way as the older French women? Do you think that they would invest so much money on a jacket that they would have to wear it for years to justify their spending ? I don't disagree with you on quality over quantity....I just wonder if this sort of buying has stayed with the younger generation in France?
I’ve made an agreement with myself not to impulse buy clothes ! I hate to shop anyway so this wasn’t hard. I’m happy with my closet for now. I also decided if I did buy something new, I would take out two or three old pieces and donate them
Thanks for another great video, MA! I love learning the French names for various styles, parts of clothing, etc., it would be great if you could also add a simple caption so that we can get the correct spelling, for those of us whose French “ear” is rusty (me and other former Francophones) or non-existent (most other people outside of France). Also, I want to say that I think you are very responsive to your community’s comments and feedback, another reason why we love you! Many RUclipsrs have a policy of never responding, I suppose it makes them feel more exclusive, what is actually does is make viewers feel that they just don’t care.
I wear a lovely dark red scarf my daughters bought me in Paris when they were sixteen on holiday together they are now thirty five thirty three and thirty seven u c I keep things that colour would go well with your jacket and your lipstick colour
Thank you for all this information but honestly, you've shared this info with us so many times before. I would have liked to hear about hats or scarfes you wear with it.
It is a really classy pea coat, sure it will fit you very well, I have my wool coats, but I think that it very expensive to clean them, and I don´t use them too much, we have a very nice weather all year long, not to much cold, I prefer the jackets, less and easy care. By the way love your striped shirt.
Ofcause...but thank you for your heats and respons, when you have the time.by the Way,i also have such jacket,as you say...it is so wearable...for years...good buy
You mentioned that you will use your new pea coat with a nice hat. Tell more about your hats, please! ... I my self am properbly going to use a woolen baret with my pea coat...
Good evening Marie-Anne, thank you for this video. I love your new caban and would like to buy the same for myself. However, I don't live in France and don't know this brand so I would to be sure of the size before I order it online. How do you find this coat fits you : does it fit true to its size, or smaller, or maybe larger? Thank you.
Bonjour! What kind of wrist watches would you recommend to a classic wardrobe? Do you have a few watches to fit different styles? I look forward to hear your opinion. Merci.
Bonjour Marie-Anne, another very useful reminder of how to shop thoughtfully. This jacket is absolutely gorgeous and would really suit my new petite shape! - would love to inherit this jacket, if you decide to donate outside the family!! ☺ Merci beaucoup Marie-Anne
I have lovely coats i have had for years that i still wear that are what i class as classic..and l will be upset if they wearout ...ihave dark hair in your style now with red lips @( yes im one of those who love your lipstick)
Isn't it true that we get bored of fashion. It drives everybody nuts! Me included! haha! It can ruin us trying to follow it! Classic style gives the intelligent and sober look while being elegant. French people are so right about this! Thank you for keeping the head on the shoulders! I want to get free from fashion!
It is a choice to buy clothes that last for several decades. I think it is rather boring and prefer to change at least once in three years my wintercoat. Option is to sell a coat after a few years to someone else. And to buy second hand. In fact i did buy a classic fabulous Max Mara second hand coat last winter and i adore it. You can not speak for all the French women talking about "we this" and "we that". You better speak for yourself. How can you know how you think about clothing in ten years from now? Life seem to me very boring if you already know ;) Also: watch out for moths! Otherwise your coat will not last that long.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur The (alpaca) Max Mara i certainly never will sell! ;) Some women like to change their wardrobe every month ;)I have a beautiful knitted 100 % Scottish cashmere scarf which i wear already for at least 15 years. So i absolutely understand what you mean but I like a little bit more change and renewing . I love beautiful animal friendly natural materials. I never wear 100 % synthetic. Sometimes there is some minor percentage of synthetic in my clothes. Have a nice day in beautiful douce France ! It is the favorite holiday country ( together with French Belgium) for me and my family living in Holland. I love the French language! In my opinion it is by far the most beautiful language on earth! I LOVE your little accent and French musical intonation ! ;) But of course your English is very very good.

In 1986 I treated myself to a beautiful winter coat from Nieman Marcus. Even on sale it was expensive. It is still a classic and I still wear it!

Was there a reason you didn’t put it on. ..so frustrating
Didn't fit anymore or too frumpy and a bad buy
I love a peacoat too! I'm inspired to buy one this winter. I live in New England where the coat will be worn a lot.
Peacoats are wonderful, I agree. I ask myself these questions which explains why my wardrobe is a limited one.
Would also love a video with what you eat in a day (typical day). Love all your videos!

Thank you.
❤️
Can you please do a video on how to know when to get rid of items in your closet?
Love the coat. Definitely a classic.
That coat is beautiful- please show us looks😊
Bonjour! What kind of wrist watches would you recommend to a classic wardrobe? Do you have a few watches to fit different styles? I look forward to hear your opinion. Merci.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur Merci beaucoup! Nordgreen watches are indeed very subtle and classy. I'm going to get myself one similar to yours. :)
Very good advice.
I love my wool coats too
Bonjour Marie-Anne, another very useful reminder of how to shop thoughtfully. This jacket is absolutely gorgeous and would really suit my new petite shape! - would love to inherit this jacket, if you decide to donate outside the family!! ☺ Merci beaucoup Marie-Anne

Please do a video with your skin care routine. You have fantastic skin, so please share your tips.
I would love to have a pea coat, but I am allergic to several textile dyes. I hope one day to find one in undyed fabric.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur What a great idea! Where can i find this please! And thank you
It is a choice to buy clothes that last for several decades.

Greetings from California. You look look lovely. Tell me about your necklace. I'd love to see it close-up.
To much talking , let's see the coat .
I for one, could listen to Marie-Anne read the telephone book. She is delightful!
She reminds me so much of my French friends and acquaintances. Always a
refreshing Gallic spin on everything.
