The K-Line diesel switcher is an S-2, It is a copy of the Marx 1998 Deisel switcher using Marx tooling.

I miss K-Line! They had some really nice offerings. I have the Dr. Pepper S-2 and a few other specialty diesels. Never bought the Hersey or Coca-Cola set (though I had the opportunity). Still some available in the wild (Ebay).

Marx guy here, no bells and whistles just the basics, old tec. That`s what I like. Does that Hershey Diner serve anything other than Hershey`s hot co co, choc. chip pancakes and muffins, ice cream, extra?

that's one saweeet collection Ed! Reminded me too why I don't sell anything, cuz then I'd have to go buy it again and most likely at collector prices! K-line sure did offer some nice sets & accessories, especially for themed trains like these! Thanks for sharing!

Many Thanx John! K-Line was definitely the master of licensed products and they had some awesome products!

Fascinating video Ed. I enjoyed seeing your Hershey's collection. I have the dark brown Hershey's 100th anniversary boxcar. I bought it at a train show and I didn't know it was part of a set. We always enjoyed stopping at Hershey for chocolate on the way home from Strasburg Railroad. Amazing video.

Many thanx Al, glad you enjoyed the video! I waited far too long to break these trains out and run them. They’ll probably get a bunch more run time in the next couple of weeks!

As you mentioned, Kline made many of those buildings in CocaCola colors. I’m not a fan of Coke but I have several of those. I have and painted the Coke station, I customized the Coke factory and I also have the Coke version barrel loader. It has Coke logos on the ends of the barrels. My father had an original Mark barrel loader so when I saw the Coke version in the catalog I had to have one. Mine works very well as my dads did. In fact, my loader will toss those barrels past the waiting gondola onto the floor. Lol

I stopped buying soda - including Coke - many years ago so technically I'm not 'into' Coke either, but the trains and their Christmas stuff are still awesome. After all, I don't have to drink the stuff to enjoy their trains. My original Marx barrel loader will toss barrels as well. The K-Line one on the layout now probably just needs a little tweaking for it to work right.

Well that sucks! My last order from the UK arrived without problems. The Flying Scotsman would have been cool! Yeah, Lionel totally screwed up the K-Line brand - what a shame!

I'm not normally into novelty items but those are two lovely sets.

    • @Ed-ICE-Berg

I agree, and these two are among my favorite sets. When I was into HO scale during the '60s-'80s, there was no such thing as running novelty trains. Man-oh-man, it was one serious atmosphere and requiring of its adherents that every square millimeter of train layout real estate be über detailed! Once I switched to 3-rail O-gauge and tinplate in the early '90s I discovered something - FUN! I actually started having fun with trains after decades of boring seriousness. On the one hand, I have thoroughly embraced the novelty sets. On the other hand, I still can't get into many of the classic Postwar accessories that I started buying. I mean really, unloading barrels on one end, pulling the train up four inches and reloading them? Sorry, tried it, couldn't get into it, sold the stuff. 🙂

I was an adult during the K-line era and definitely enjoyed the creativity and variety that they delivered. With the current heat wave I’m surprised that you are celebrating chocolate. When I was very young during the heat of the summer, I would hang in the cool basement with only the layout lights on and run my Alaska trains. I had two 6464 boxcars and the little switcher that I bought for half price at Ace hardware after Christmas. Good memories of hot summer days. Best wishes and stay cool.

I was an adult too during the K-Line era. After decades of being into HO scale, I switched to 3-rail in the early '90s and actually started having fun with trains. Any time of year is a good time to celebrate and enjoy chocolate! I have a bunch of other candy cars but these running sessions are all about my K-Line Hershey's sets! Oh and BTW, basements in our neck of the cactus are few and far between - we have to make do with garages or a spare room (which is also rare out here as they're usually occupied).

I have a friend who grew up Mennonite on a dairy farm near the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania. During the hot summer months the factory outlet would sell wrapped chocolate in bulk. His father would buy large bags that they took home and ran though a coarse grinder and then feed it to the cows wrappers and all. He said they enjoyed it and didn’t seem to object to the wrappers. Of course the children snuck some for themselves. Best wishes, keep cool.

Thanx Radar! We’ll buy Hershey’s dark as well just for variety. I’m okay with 70% cocoa beans but any more than that gets too dark.
