    Hi there! Today we compare two "digitally enabled" Edifier speakers, Edifier R1280DB and R1850DB. Both have digital inputs (coax and toslink), Blutetooth connectivity and remote control. Which one is better? Let's find out!
    As already mentioned, both R1850DB and r1280DB have wide host of inputs, both digital as well as analog. The one difference is that R1850DB also has subwoofer output and R1280DB does not. Other difference is that R1850DB looks much more premium, feels more premium and is actually better build.
    Soundwise they are closer than the difference in pricetags would suggest. Overall I find R1850DB to sound smoother and more natural, especially in the midrange and treble departments, R1280Db has a bit roughness to the midrange and grain to the treble that R1850DB lacks. Bass is where they are very similar (similarly good for the size I must say) so neither gets ahead in this department. Overall I think that both of these are well worth their asking prices, but I would suggest going with R1850DB if Your budget allows for that.
    What do You think? Which one would you choose and why? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

    I actually purchased the r1280db and ultimately returned it for the r1850db (and glad I did). The r1280db’s are outstanding for the money and sound quite similar to the r1850db’s. The mids sound a bit more balanced with the r1850’s and the soundstage is more open. As referenced elsewhere, the r1850’s look much sharper and elegant. In addition, the sub out, found in the r1850’s, is an absolute difference-maker. I hooked a B&W ASW300 sub to the r1850’s and the sound was transformed. If you are looking for a small monitor with the flexibility of inputs and the ability to add a sub (and compete with decent floorstanding speakers), I would strongly encourage looking at Edifier’s r1850db.
    P.S. It may not be a fair comparison - r1280db selling for $130 in the US vs $200 for the r1850db.

    Listened with the bose q35II and the clear winner for me is the 1850. The 1850 sounds much crisper and detailed and has a wider soundstage. The 1280 has decent mids and good lows, but the details are missing.

    1850 sounds neater and cleaned up It also has the separated bi-amping for low and highs. This will have better DSP processing over the complete volume range. . The 1280 is a bit rougher in mids/highs and a little pinch more low end. Both sounds have their own benefits....

    Thanks to listening to a veritable battery of your videos, I think I've got it narrowed down to these two and, exactly as you mention in your pinned comment, it seems to me that the 1850 is worth the extra money for the subwoofer output and the better build quality. Tonally they seem interestingly different but without a clear winner. I imagine that someone who is used to a tubey, west-coast sound will prefer the 1850s, while someone with more a British, Linn/Arcam palate might prefer the 1280. Doesn't seem like a wrong choice is available for this kind of money, frankly.

    One of the weird things is that, while listening to this test between the 1850 vs 1280, the 1280 seems delivering more bass than the 1850 ( when I am listening to it on the new 1850 i just got 2 days back ).

  • @sparketech
    @sparketech 4 года назад +2

    Personal thought: Starting at 10:16 I can clearly hear a difference on those highs. I am listening on Audio Engine A2+ speakers BTW. The 1280s have a highs sound to me that sounds like cheaper speakers would have that irritate my ears. Most other music it does sound like a deeper sound stage on the 1850s but I certainly can't stand highs that have a cheap sound to them. I'd run the 1850s with the treble turned up; either way both are super close in sound quality. Keep in mind the 1280T is a down graded version without optical, cheaper remote and even more treble focused while the DB version is this much closer comparison.

      Hi so do you think getting 1280db is worth it? I cant stretch my budget beyond that. 1280t, 1580db(available in my country) and 1280db are my final options. Which one would you pick?

    • @sparketech
      @sparketech 4 года назад +1

      @@quantum3712 Sure the 1280db is good value, but the treble I don't like... Best if you have an optical port on your PC or whatever it is that you are connecting to. I think Digital Stereophony has connected to RCA? Which audio wise is the same as AUX but RCA allows longer cable runs. I purchased the 1850DB (was 40% off Edifier online when I purchased), the optical connection is noticeably better than any other connection in part because any other connection has some hiss sound that can be heard in a silent room, the Audio Engine A2+ has the same sort of hiss and has no optical. I have no clue about the 1580db other than unless you need a PA system and are intent on using bluetooth and do not have an optical port anyways. Personally unless I needed those extra features I would not waste my money on missing out on optical port sound quality.

    • @quantum3712
      @quantum3712 4 года назад

      @@sparketech thanks a lot. I would better get 1280db, however, i liked to sound out of 1280t, better soundstage i guess(more open). But I don't mind tradeoff between sound for extra connections which definitely come handy. 😊

    strangely enough, the sound of the R1280 sounded more balanced than the R1850 where I experienced strong bass at low frequencies and the middle frequencies disappeared more, so not here. In the end, I bought the R1380 and they are close to the R1700, which plays the most lively and believable of the whole offer and there is nothing extra. For me, the R1850 is a big disappointment, the mids are indistinct and the bass is poor. So you can find more live music at R1280 from this decision with R1850.

    De afstandsbediening van de R1850DB is de zwakste schakel. We gebruiken deze boxen enkel voor TV dus de AB wordt veel gebruikt. Binnen 1 jaar was deze helemaal op en kregen een nieuwe toegestuurd. Mijn vraag is of het mogelijk is een universele afstandsbediening te gebruiken want die knoopcellen AB is verschrikkelijk. Snel moet je ze ook nog vervangen. De boxen zijn degelijk en het geluid krijgt een 7, dus redelijk tot goed voor deze klasse.

    У меня 1850 ДБ. Полностью доволен. Некоторый недостаток низких у 1850 по сравнению с 1280 вызван тем, что часть низа предусмотрено передать сабвуферу. И слушать 1850 через 1850 - немного смешно :-)))

    Mids are more forward with the 1280 and more recess with the 1850DB. but the 1850 is tighter. I find the R1850DB has better control. Sound Stage is also for focus on the 1850. But Wider with the 1280. And what Bass Test? none of them have bass unless you add a sub woofer.

    Its all about the sound field.. The 1280 sound much wider than the 1850. Control wise, the 1850 is tighter while the 1280 is more blended in. it makes sense when the 1280 wave guide is much bigger than the 1850. But if you are paring with a Sub Woofer and crank up the volume. I can bet that 1850 will have a better control sound. I have both and I can attest to my testament. Value wise the 1280 will win the battle. Hands down. but the 1850 do offer something 1280 lack. A Sub Woofer Out. Without a Sub, the 1280 wins hands down straightly base on this demo.
