41 year-old man here, nothing strange about wanting to go on an adventure. That's probably one of every man's dream and since we can't do that in real life (cause of our jobs etc) we just play videogames or watch anime or movies about grand adventures.
The character Dana will always be around the foremost of best female characters to me as we follow her journey to, quite literally, saving the world and future. Her sacrifices and what she did to assure the future are legendary in terms of gaming characters. That said, and with that piece about Dana in mind, I think players are really going to like Karja quite a lot. She is everything you want from a legitimate strong female lead character. She isn't forced, she isn't flashy or boastful, she is just a lifestyle of her environment and really comes into her own as a shield partner to Adol. Not to mention the voice work is excellent.
So cool seeing you grow as a creator and getting things like review copies. Would love to see you do these more, even if you don't get copies. Also, totally relate to your love of adventure. Keep up the great stuff!
I plan to make this series super casual so I can make videos about games I'm playing even if I dont do a "series" on them yanno? It'd be way too much to do a playthrough of every game every viewer wants me to play so I feel these can really go a long way. Especially since I'd love to tackle my backlog and this seems like a neat way to do it for games new and old!
Well i mean being this age and still thinking about for all intents and purposes, ditching responsibilities to go play outside 💀. I also said nearing 30, but I'm turning 27 in a few days. So I'm not quite there yet, but ya get what I mean 😅

I NEED to play more star ocean. I played the So2 remake as my first one. And I was blown away by how amazing it was, I COULDNT put it down. I played it for days straight when it dropped, and I regret nothing. I'm itching to break out my steam deck and go for a round 2 with it!

Man I am so happy to have seen you become a Falcom fan....I got into Ys back in 2019 the year after Trails. I played all the games except Memories of Celceta, and played the Japanese release of Ys IX. Been a fan for life since! Falcom NEVER disappoints and my emotions are always hit with an 18-wheeler going 300mph. Especially the latest Trails title that just released in Japan, Trails of the World. Can't wait for the next Ys either!!! Played X last year and LOVED IT!! So glad to see this! Falcom forever!
You definitely should check them out! Unlike some series where you gotta keep up with each entry, this series has the same main protagonist in every game but each game takes place at different points in his life. Ys 9 takes place in his late 20s, while in Ys 10, this is timeline-wise, his 3rd adventure and he's 17. So I think this game makes a GREAT jumping in point! I highly recommend checking out the demo on your platform of choice because again, demo progress transfers to the full game if you do decide to pick it up!
Adol is a true adventurer! More than Link even. Link just saves the same place over and over again from the same bad guy (generally speaking). I haven't played any game that captures the spirit of adventure like Ys does. Sometimes, I wish I was born back in the time of Lewis and Clark when I could have joined them or some other great adventure! Sadly, that's not really possible today, but Ys gives me a taste of that feel.
Yeah, I don't think in our lifetime the world will let "adventurers" exist in the way they do in something like Ys. But I think that's what makes escaping into their world so enjoyable!
It was my first Ys game!! I adore the game so much, I'll never forget the amazing characters and the BANGIN soundtrack. Iclucian Dance has infected every inch of my brain and it's never going away 😭🙏🏾❤️
From what you are saying, this is the type of game that captures the feel of a 2000s ps2/gamecube/xbox era videogame ass game, where the focus is on engaging and creative gameplay and interesting art direction Thats the best way to sell me a game nowadays, i'm so tired of all the hyperrealistic cinematic narrative driven stories we get nowadays in the AAA space, so seeing these smaller games thrive makes me really happy
It also helps that its a fast paced hack n slash (which is a subgenre that deserves more appreciation) and not chasing the honestly overdone soulslike or other similar slow combat trend
It really feels like nihon falcom is going back to basics with nordics, and imma say it, this is the best combat ys has had in recent years. Previously, for as fun as it was, it really boiled down to "use the skills to extend combos or spam, and match the character type to the enemy weakenss". Going from the demo, Nordics really makes a good job of making you want to use all the mechanics. Karja seems overall better for breaking durability bars, so you want to use her for that, then swap to Adol to deal some damage. The mana spells that you can do are also awesome, and i love how they're used in the first boss that supports them to both clear the field of bullshit and stay away from the floor. The revenge system means you can play in solo mode, keep fighting, and when you get to x2.0, do a big attack for some good damage. Speed and power attacks give you an incentive to do both dodges and guarding, and a lot of skills themselves have different properties, like launching enemies up, plunging down to finish aerial combos, or sucking enemies in to keep punching them. This all somehow works together and gives us an insane combat system. I can't wait to play more of this. See y'all in the full game!
Wait..ship battles? I’m hyped now. I’ve wanted something like that worked into an rpg for so long. The only other similar thing I know of is Skies of Arcadia.
Yooo that's awesome! I wish they could somehow bring that co-op feature to other platforms besides PC. But I do get that it's technically unofficial so that may not happen. But still, co-op or solo I'm sure replaying the game in English will be a blast for you 😭🙏🏾
Ys 8 was my first one as well, and I think that was the first time since I've been an adult that a video game made me feel like a kid again. It had it's problems sure but the plot surrounding Dana and her time and the connection between this island, her and Dana through dreams drew me in and kept me in a freakin' headlock, I binged that game so hard!
Between Ys X nordics and next years remaster of “Ys Memoire: The Oath of Felghana Refined Edition” that’s coming out next year for switch. My excitement for some Ys’ is real. I’m still kinda disappointed I had to skip Ys’ 9 monstrom nox for the switch, the game is still hard to find near me and the game is still being sold at $60, no price drop which is unfortunate….
Quick question, I just got the Ys x nordics, deluxe edition, and you can get four free dlc download items and I downloaded them but they are not showing up in game. I’m only at level 11 at the moment so I do not know if you have to reach a certain level or what but I would love some pointers on getting my dlc items!
The only YS game I've finished was Oath In Felghana, not sure of the spelling but I played it on the PSP. Maye I should try the other YS games sometime.
You really should! This game takes place before Oath in Felghana too! That's actually a game I own but have been meaning to get to for a hot minute. I'm tempted to wait for the remaster coming out, even though I own the original on Steam already. The music in that game alone makes me wanna boot it up already 😭🙏🏾
I was like you as well around 2 years ago. Had no idea what it was. It wasn't until I played Ys 8 that this series sucked me in. I was genuinely shocked how much the story grabbed me an how much fun exploring the world and beating up enemies was, especially accompanied by such BANGIN' music. Sunshine Coastline from that game is a banger for all time! If you have a Switch, PC, or Playstation, I recommend you check out the demo! It's the first 3 chapters of the game AND it lets you carry your progress over to the full game if you decide to buy it!
As an oldhead Zelda guy I think I can agree. I'll always love Zelda, maybe even more, but Ys is something I think EVERYONE should play because there's so much to love that it's one of the few series I think 99% of gamers and non-gamers can enjoy.
I'm a big Ys fan, but I have to stay this game is ugly. The backgrounds/ environments look terrible. dream of the day Ys devs, step up and give us a next gem looking game. Overall looking forward to the game.
Falcom is only really a AA studio, they don't have Square Enix level budgets. Although this game in particular was prioritized for Switch which is why its downscale a bit which kinda sucks. Feels like the switch is holding people back. And it sucks for JP companies to NOT make switch versions because it's legit one of the highest sold consoles of all time and has the most active users in Japan. So catering to that base is a necessary evil in their eyes
@KingdomAce hey man! Great video, btw. I agree with your point. But I would like to add, as a consumer, I don't care about AA or AAA. It's all about the price of the game. If they release a PS5 for $60 that looks like a ps3 game..I'm going to be like wtf. But if Ys 10 was $40, I wouldn't complain about the graphics. Overall it's just me nitpicking, because I would love to see the Ys franchise grow. Looking forward to the gameplay & story.

I honestly couldn't disagree more. Mostly because the mechanics are thoroughly explained (and are able to be re-read at any time in the menus), enemy attacks are telegraphed super well to where its super obvious when they'll do so. The game DOES punish you for just button mashing, sso if you're doing so, that may be WHY you're struggling. Evading is simple because, again, everything is telegraphed so you just need to be alert, and just press the dodge button when you see it coming. Special attacks are the exact same they've been since Ys 8, meaning they're just as simple as holding r1 and pressing the buttons you choose to make the attacks be. And switching is just the press of a button, the game even explains when the best times to do so are. So again, if you're paying attention, and you've read or even re-read the tips, the game should not be confusing and in no way be a "mess". If its something you just dont like, thats one thing, but the game is VERY simple with its execution. Which is why I feel many will enjoy this as their first Ys game.
