- The legendary Burt Reynolds (February 11, 1936 - September 6, 2018) is interviewed here by Rona Barrett in 1985 for "Entertainment Tonight" and discusses the health issues he had been battling after being injured during a fight scene on the movie "City Heat". Rest in peace to a true star.
And he lived another 33 years. RIP Burt.
Aids? Cancer? No. Character assassination. Burt, you were a class act.
It's also pretty telling that at the time they would use an illness to attack people. Burt kept it classy by not saying anything against people with AIDS, just pointing out he didn't have it. I read that later (or around this time? it was when Rock Hudson publicly disclosed) he was at the AIDS benefit and reporters were like "why are you here?" and Burt was like o_O
Burt lived just down the street from us. I didn't know him but I know several people who did. To a person, every one of them says he was a very kind and humble person and nothing at all like what you saw on the Tonight Show. I'm glad I got to see this. I imagine this is the Burt Reynolds they were talking about.
It's so sad that he ever had to deal with this mess. So sad. He deserved more than this.
Kathleen Turner had a lot to do with the rumors that Burt had AIDS. She supposedly made him take one blood test after another during the production of "Switching Channels". In my book that makes her a first class pig!
TMJ is no joke. RIP Burt. You always gave 110% in my book. Thank you sir.
I think I'm going on a Burt R movie binge this weekend
Sharky's Machine then Deliverance ready to go!
Me too I’ve been looking for his movies.

You won't regret it. Heat, Sharkey's Machine, and Deliverance are is real hardcore ones. His fun comedic but incredibly awesome stunt and car chase movies are Hooper and Smokey and the Bandit.
This was early into the AIDS era, and at the time; people thought that only gay men got it. so, this was a really loaded proposition on several different levels.
Childhood hero..God bless Burt..Legend.
R.I.P. Burt Reynolds.
What he said at the end really touched me, I think he was suffering in many different ways towards the end.
Rest In Peace Burt 🙏🏻
No matter the success he had i heard he was still humble as hell. And quiet. Grew up watching him.
Love ya Burt... Thanks for some great memories... A class act...
That jaw issue from the chair hit messed him up for the rest of his life.
Luch yes, it changed him...and he had nobody to be there for him..
@@valdatriegaardt6310 it must of been terrible. A sore jaw and no one there for him, how did he go on in life.
i know its bad. isn't it?
simply complicated Who was the side chick? Just curious..
livey oone what was her most vulnerable moment? Sorry for asking, but I didn't know about this...
One of the greatest entertainers period.
Burt was a football player, stuntman and action star. He suffered injuries and had constant pain at this point in his life. The man eventually had to take pain pills just to get through the day. Burt is a legend and the scummy media always tries to destroy legends.
Burt was one of the last REAL men in Hollywood.
Him and Connery.
He was also an astronaut, submarine builder and operator, shrimp boat captain, and played a mean game of backgammon.
Hollywood turned on Burt Reynolds because he was from the South. They also didn't like the fact that he had a way with the ladies! Yes, he had some bad movies, but nothing as bad as "Ishtar".

Loved this man
Great man,Great actor......he’ll always be The Bandit in my mind!
He will truly be missed.
Tmj problems is horrific, after a car accident a friend had horrific headaches problems with light and sound and Pain, the doctors kept telling my friend there’s nothing wrong her it’s all in her head she’s fine they dismissed her pleas for help, her lawyer sent her to an orthodontist who discovered her tmj was messed up they had to wire her jaw that was very stressful but she made it through
Burt ⭐️ classic man in my book ✊I’m now 59 and came up with this man ⚡️
May he rest in peace.
A charming...talented man...could always laugh at himself...
And you wonder why Burt finally clobbered that reporter a few years back. You can only take so much of the BS.
That was at the press junket for the remake of the longest yard... The reporter said he'd never seen Burt's movie, and Burt just slapped him playfully...funny...
He always looked like he going to laugh. He has an easy smile and infectious laugh. My opinion..Charming.
Thanx for this clip today Rob.
My brother looked like moved like had same sense of humor as Burt.I love burt.watch his movies all the time.
RIP Burt
Missing Burt n 2024.
Poor bastard! He only had 33 years, one third century left to live. Bless him xx
Burt’s career had gone ice cold by 1985. Happy he made somewhat of a comeback in the early nineties.
Im a big fan of MR BURT REYNOLDS RIP 🤴 😊
Eddie adams from torrance! I knew you would make it!
People are always telling me that..
I look like Burt Reynolds..What a nice compliment I think..We love and miss you Burt.
Your biggest fan !!!!

Burt telling us about FAKE NEWS MEDIA in 1985
He's mainly taking aim here at "The National Enquirer', which has been around since 1926. Its parent company - American Media Inc. - has either published or is publishing a swath of publications throughout the years like "Globe" (around since the mid 50s), "Sun", "Star", "Weekly World News' and such that are commonly found at check-outs in super markets and drug stores. They are in the business of making money through gossip, and unfortunately for humanity a lot of people do buy these and take them as being factual. Tabloid press goes back to the birth of the entertainment industry.
It was not fake news. He was very sick, he had lots of pain, he got skinny and looked sick, and he got addicted to the pain meds. It just wasn't AIDS.
@@mircat28 It was the AIDS that EVERYONE was terrified of. Maybe you're not old enough to understands that time in our history. It was nuts! It was the "perceived" idea he had the AIDS virus. And if you worked closely w/anyone, did a love scene w/someone, many believed they would then get the AIDS virus too. It was a terrible time. No one cared one bit about any (legitimitate) pain pills he was taking.
@@robatsea2009 He was taking aim at the "tabloids" for sure, but mainstream media outlets carried this story too. He was too big of a star & the AIDS crisis was too big of an issue. The majority of the media took the bait. A story totally unfounded w/no facts behind it. But it did real lasting damage to Burt & his career. Very, very sad.
It was 100% "fake news"
Thanks Burt. Many great movies, Stick was one my favs!
I have had TMJ surgery on each side. The disc that your jaw rotates on gets damaged from trama such as car wrecks, getting hit on the jaw in a fight or like Burt said getting wacked with a chair or other objects. The disc is replaced with a silicone disc. Before you finally get the surgery you are in a lot of pain and for about two to four weeks after the surgery you are in a lot of pain. I had both surgeries in 1994 and have had no problems since.
Sadly, this injury continued his on/off addiction to pain killers. Which in turn, negatively impacted his heart. He ultimately kicked his habit, but there are often consequences to other parts of the body when using those types of drugs for long periods of time. It's too bad as he got older he was not privy to or involved in more wholistic approaches to pain. It would've served him well...
He lived to 82 - how old did you think he was going to get? 102?
@@CornPopWazABadDude that's not the point, I don't think so. He died of a heart attack and that says a lot. Gladly, he's found peace at last. 🕊️.
Very interesting last exchange between the 2.
I still can't believe all the bad things that happened to Burt...tmj, money problems, lost his box office power etc.
He also went through the ugly divorce with Loni Anderson after this.
I had tmj back then i had surgery for it very painful thanks to him i knew what i had it feels likw a constant abscess tooth
one of the best
good ole Burt
He was robbed of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for BOOGIE NIGHTS.
Rip! Reynolds!
"Stick" could have been a great movie. I would love to see Burt's original version that he presented to the studio. It was said to be pretty good, but the studio made him reshoot and recut it into a shambles.
Wish he would have never started messing with his face. Love this guy
What did he do to his face? Surgery?
@@ganggang3873 yup
This is disgraceful. Rip Burt you were a real character unlike today's boring movie stars. They are so lame yet think they are so cool.
Media never changes.
In terms of his box office appeal, it is shocking just how quickly he lost it. There's so many stars in Hollywood that have flop after flop, but they keep getting chances (Burt's namesake Ryan springs to mind). Burt had a string of hits, but all it took were two or three flops and he was pretty much done by the late 80's... He then had to go crawling back to television at a time when that was considered a humiliation... Now everyone does T.V, even The Rock.
He had a lot of comebacks. Even a few in the 90s and 2000s. Cop and a Half, Boogie Nights, Without a Paddle, The Longest Yard 2005, Duke of Hazards. GTA San Andreas and Saints Row The Third were very popular with youth. He aged alot by the 90s so he did a lot better than most actors. His "flops" also became cult hits on video and tv re-views.
With this terrible stunt going wrong,Burt suffers for years, and hear he looks like he's in pain, still looks great but suffering ,poor Burt,
1985 everyone had aids just took another 20 years to forget it
The media sucked back then too!
And the one who was truly there for him during this time was Sally Field.
Actually, this is not true. They had broken up for good at this point. She had an opportunity to shoot down t/rumor in a national IV she had done & was asked specifically about what was happening w/Burt. She chose not to. (Maybe still angry w/him about the break up?) Who knows, but it was very painful to him she did this. She did send him a note of apology afterwards. But, according to Burt, t/ rest of the world did not see that apology. She could've helped him a lot at that moment and chose not to. Very sad for him. (Info from one of his books).
@@coldwinter5710 Wasn't he dating Loni at this point?
Sally Field wouldn't have a nice thing to say about Jesus Christ!
Regardless of what you think of her profession, Rona was a real pro.
TMJ is no joke..seriously debilitating!
Honestly i don't think Sidney Lumet's Power would have the same kind of movie without Richard Gere
Nearly died after City Heat..
More likely, no one had anything thing personal against Burt, it's just that scuzzbags need to sell papers; and, he became an easy target.
He nearly died...RIP
As he got older you could see his jaw was extremely off . He did way too many of his own stunts . I think at that time if someone got thin that was the conclusion that every gossip paper jumped too because it sold papers .
He Was handsome! Fucking A, he was!
Was it Channel Four and the Comic Strip in the UK who started the rumours in 1983 in Eddie Monsoon - A Life, a fake documentary which made weird vague "controversial" mentions of Burt?
Being a stuntman it's like being a football player you're going to come out with a lot of injuries then they want to know why your health is suffering well maybe they should try it LOL you were the best Burt.
And that's how "News" can ruin someone's life. Rumours...? That's not serious...
Sounds like he suffered a serious concussion from the chair to the face. I’m sure he had other injuries prior to this as well. I remember these rumours and I remember there was a time he didn’t look too good.
4:59 holy shit not a kind picture
Power was not Sidney Lumet best work anyway. Burt probably sensed it and didn’t do the movie.
10. Nobody caught the both cuttin one I guess
He looks just like Turd Ferguson, but without the giant cowboy hat.
God! the media are filth of the highest level! They did it to Princess Diana, Michael Jackson and others, now Burt.., yet they don't hound the ones who are Bad..
They don't need to add anything to the bad guys to sell papers.
People talkin about Burt we're jealous LOL
New York post ugh their as bad as national enquirer
Nothing new, I'm a nobody and I've even had newspapers lie about me.
I also remember when they said crap like men landed on the moon. Oh my, they've always told some big ones!
Hal Needham’s Wikipedia page says he lived in Burt’s guesthouse 12 years. That’s longer than Sally Field or Loni Anderson lasted. I figured Anderson married for the money & Reynolds married her to give the right impression. I always thought Reynolds acted weird, like he was always holding something back, or trying to put on. His best friends were mostly gay men. Reynolds visited the set of MatchGame once & he & Charles Nelson Reilly looked at each other like long lost lovers (Reilly was up front about being gay). They roomed together in NYC when both were in the theater there. Whatever health problems Reynolds had going on, I think the man was gay & scared to death someone would out him.
Fake news been around RIP
Not fake. He was sick had huge problems just not AIDS.
And notice how he says nothing about his addiction to Percodan?
The drugs were for the wretched pain for a year or more. He got skinny and looked sick. Back then people didnt brag about addiction like they do now. It was not and is not a badge of honor to say how many times you've been in rehab.
Nobody asked.
Burt was bi sexual, back then nobody would admit they were gay ,or bi,,now you get the spotlight for it.
he got adds lol damlol
Yeah, it was shitty of them to falsify a story about him but um he was a celebrity and it went with the territory. He should've expected it.
Burt Reinholds
Two things. A. It's a shame what they did to Burt, but that's the tabloids for you. Now it's mainstream media doing it about other things from decades past. And B: Where is Leonard Maltin's review of "Year of the Dragon?"
It was posted on September 6 under a clip titled "1985 Summer Movies on Entertainment Tonight"
Thank you
turns out it was just a allergic reaction to wig glue
