I'm glad they added some extra touches to make Dee Jay stand out more gameplay wise. He's always sort of been in the shadow of Guile as a "charge shoto" and giving him some mind games he can play with the opponent is very fun.
So from what I’ve seen, he’s our mind games archetype. The sacrifice of his cancelable normals was deposited into the rush of the mixups that can be done in and out of pressure through his fakes and ‘dandy step’ stance. I’m still geeking out at how clean his fake up kick is when positioned for a cross up into a combo for good damage. Plus all the damage from his ‘deadly rave’ in and out of perfect timing is a threat as well. I can already feel how insane Deejay at a high level will be. Just need to wait a bit for the masterminds to get sweaty in the lab with him.
Deejay is so cool. I thought the fact that lots of his normals dont cancel was a little off putting but after putting some time training i am getting used to it. His vibes have made him my main
It's nice to see fighting games' still-only Jamaican character *finally* be given some love after two decades instead of remaining a borderline stereotype who was just a lesser version of Guile with absolutely nothing going for him.

Can you cover modern on future tutorials as well? Since characters lose buttons, and cancels, it would be nice to have a small tidbit on how to approach neutral and combos with the limited moveset.
Sad day that a huge fighting game influencer plays my character because now everyone is gonna see the evil mix, but happy day that I get to steal evil mix from a guy I already watch
If you use it to end a combo it’s always in grab range. This isn’t a move that you would just throw out and hope to get a grab off of, as it’s negative 10 on block. And you don’t need to worry about your opponent pressing a button because the grab will beat all normals
I don't think he will be popular. Even though he is a hybrid, charge moves are absolutely not noob friendly and charge characters gatekeep noobs. I always wanted to main blanka but I struggled so much with the learning curve for charge moves that I just let him sit in my peripheral while I played an easier character and lived vicariously thru others. I forced myself to learn it so I can finally play who I've always had my eyes on.
Im basically completely new to the series (played maybe 10 games of SFV). I’ve been using Modern controls and the down charge input isn’t bad, but his projectile charge input is the worst.
There’s basically 2 different ways to utilize drive rush and they cost different amounts of drive gauge. If you’re just standing in neutral you can drive rush in to pressure the opponent which I think only costs one bar or you can cancel out of normals into drive rush which costs 3 bars. So lemme give you an example of a good situation to use the 1 bar drive rush option in, let’s say you have someone backed in the corner and you wanna bait them into whiffing a button or trying to tech a throw you can walk back and if you catch them pressing a button as you shimmy backwards you can drive rush in and get punish counter combo for good damage. Drive rush is good for situations like that when you wanna cover distance quickly and it’s also really good for combo extending. You also don’t have to end drive rush with just a button, you could drive rush in and throw them as well so let’s say they have you backed into a corner you could drive rush in and back throw them and then boom all the sudden you have the corner advantage
Ken has his command run, thats as close as you will get i think? you press two kicks to do it (but you will prob still have to use drive rush, keep practicing!)
He is a cool character and fun to watch when someone knows what they're doing, and the overhaul makes Dee Jay feel like a brand new character. This was a good tutorial on what he can do. Despite that I'm not touching him because he has charge inputs, but I'm definitely watching any other tutorials you put out for the other characters.
Hey! Do you know what I should do when I wake up or when my opponent wakes up. I always lose and can never get the first hit. I can never grab straight out of wake-up and I always lose to juris grab and Cammys punch. What is the attack I should do when a) I wake up or b) when my opponent wakes up?
So he has a fireball, an anti-air, and an advancing move that gets around projectiles. Is Dee Jay a shoto, or does the fact two of those three moves are charge moves mean he isn't?
His basic skeleton is a charge based shoto, he just has a lot of flesh that lets him play like something more than just a charge based shoto. He is the ken to guile's ryu
Drive rush lets deejay actually combo into mg upper for a change. This is HUGE, considering you used to need to do it raw off a jump in back in ST and landing it in 4 is so annoying
Call me crazy but I prefer his old animations and fighting style more. I know he's more effective now. Though aesthetically the old Dee Jay is cooler looking
Wow, me and Sajam going for the same char. Never expected that to happen based on previous picks XD But DeeJay is really fun so I am sticking with him for now !
I like how capcom finally knows how to not to make a character trash. Deejay was so bad in us4. An example of what I mean is every super being able to get full animation in sfv (plenty of ultras were hard to combo into and didn’t get all hits) or just giving deejay two disks withHP fireball I love it.
It means instead of actually doing the specials, you do a version that LOOKS like the starting animations of the specials and recover much faster. For example: after doing fake upkicks, you recover fast enough in the air to just hit some jump buttons. If you do fake upkicks in neutral and your opponent tries to react as if it were real upkicks, you can punish them
