Day 5 | Hiking the Alta Via 1 in the Italian Dolomites | Rifugio Passo Staulanza to Rifugio Vazzoler

I am spending the next month in Italy hiking the Alta Via 1 and exploring some of the historic cities in this beautiful country. I’m also taking this opportunity to brush up on my Italian!
In this video, I struggle with some pretty intense knee pain that has me considering the rest of the hike. We begin at Passo Staulanza with a long, steep, exploded ascent up to Rifugio Coldai. I had some delicious potato gnocchi for lunch, and we enjoyed the placemats that showed the journey of where we had come from and where we were going. We continued on past the lake and day hikers to Rifugio Vazzoler. Vazzoler gave us summer camp vibes. Our group (plus 2 other people) were put into the bunkhouse. It was separate from the main house but still a nice place to rest after a long day in the mountains.

Thank you - it's unfortunately an old injury that flares up from time to time. But I'm grateful I was sable to keep going and push through it!
Hi Megan,, just finished watching all of your Alta Via1 videos,, great videos and very well narrated,, I completed the Tour de MontBlanc last year and it reminds me so much of that trip,, I think I will add this to my bucket list for sure 👍😀

What did you think of the food at Vazzoler? It seems to be the least liked hut on the AV1 based on reviews I've seen.
We loved our time at Vazzoler! It ended up being the favorite hut for one of the girls in our group. Compared to some of the other huts we stayed at, I'd give the dinner a 6/10 and the brekkie an 8/10. The bagged lunch was reasonably priced. For dinner, I had pasta ragu as the starter, polenta and cheese for my main, and pana cotta for dessert. Overall, it had more "summer camp" vibes, but we loved that!
