Tears always come when they sing the lyrics “I wasn’t there that morning when my Father passed away. I didn’t get to tell him all the things I had to say “ because that’s exactly what happened to me. My dad passed away before I got to the hospital and so much was left unsaid. It’s the perfect song to convey that message that you need to do all the talking in those living years.

Same for me, I never saw my Dad in the hospital at the end. I was 16 and had spent too much time with him in hospital over 10 years or so and when I heard he was on a ventilator I just couldn't face it. He. died the same year this song came out so it always leaves me in tears

My dad and I had a falling out that had been a long time coming. We spent three weeks not talking, where normally we would talk every day. One day he called me and asked me to look something up for him at work (he was retired from the same company I worked at). I knew it had cost him a lot of pride to call me and ask me, so I was nice and said I would look it up and call him back. When I called back about an hour later, my mother told me he had stepped out to go to the store. So I asked her to tell him I would call him back when I got home.
I walked into my apartment that night and I decided to start dinner instead of calling him right away. I figured 30 minutes wouldn't make much of a difference.
While I was getting ready to put dinner in the oven, the phone rang. I thought it was my dad calling me. It wasn't. It was my uncle, who lived in the same apartment complex my parents did.
He told me my dad had had a massive heart attack about 15 minutes ago. The paramedics where there trying to revive him but I needed to come right away.
Even after 21 years, I still am heartbroken over the fact that I never got to talk to him again. Never got to make up. Never got to tell him I forgave him and ask for his forgiveness in return. Never got to tell him, one last time, how much I loved him and to thank him for being the dad he had been all my life. 15 minutes... I missed him by 15 minutes...
So say it loud. Say it clear. You never know when it will be your last chance to do so.

thanks for dropping this track, it changes people , it changed me when I heard it. In a way it saved me because a short time after I first heard it my father had a second heart attack, HE LIVED! and a few days later he called me to tell what had happened. I was living on the other side of the country but within a month I was able to sell my , car, motorcycle , furniture and anything else that didn't fit in a wallet or suitcase and relocate back with my wife and son. I took care of both my parents for the next 10 years. It was my redemption for all I put them through growing up and I don't know if I would have had that same sense of need to be with them and care for them if I hadn't been changed, so thanks again my brother.....and oh by the way...that last verse gets everybody, were only human :)

Sometimes…. When the song is this meaningful, the video has a lot to live up to. People don’t see the message as the song progresses. In the video, the chorus there is a young boys choir singing. But in the second chorus, they add a choir of older women and men, aged as parents and grandparents. The two choirs are symbolically placed at opposite sides of the room. I particularly like when the message of the lyrics is reflected in the video. Meaningful song. As I get older I see these situations all around me. Fortunately I was able to communicate well with my parents so I have no regrets. When my head hits the pillow at night, my heart is at peace. ❤

Listening and hearing are 2 different things. You can listen so you know what your response is going to be. But hearing is a different story. Hearing means you are connecting to someone's words. Not planning your rebuttal, but actually hearing the meaning behind the words.

Yeah, that's a deep song. The music itself is very simple, but I think that's intentional so the only thing really going on are those powerful lyrics they want to ensure you get. (also, it's Mike AND the Mechanics, even though they use the + sign... I think you like to know those little things, right?)

It's why we watch. We crave to see the shared reaction experience of someone else being moved by music like we are. The emotional power that it weilds when we allow it to absorb. Good Music is one of mankind's greatest accomplishments.
Good music adds to a healthy society in many ways. Music makes us both think and feel. It can be very medicinal for the soul.

Something most people can relate to. Generational issues, especially if you and your elders allow differences of opinions to get in the way of enjoying the time you have while alive. The instrumentation might be 1980's but the lyrics and message is timeless.

Reading some of the comments here, it's absolutely heartbreaking. When we're young, we think our parents are always going to be around, but as we grow older, we get to realise how precious time is, and our parents mortality (as well as our own) becomes a reality, and then, as we become parents ourselves, it becomes even scarier.

Hey Dude, You are doing a really good job. Play some more Neil Young so I can watch you Freek out some more. I'll give you a few outstanding ones. 1) After the Gold Rush. 2) Love and War, 3) Barstool Blues. Also "Let's Roll" which Musically and lyrically puts you on the Airplane that was headed for the White House, but the passengers busted the door down and it crashed in Pennsylvania. This tune Rocks and just blows your mind. One more thing, The Avett Brothers performed
" No Hard Feelings" on the Jimmy Fallon Show. This is a Masterpiece And must be seen. Nothing like it EVER. All of these songs will be just as powerful as Mike and the Mechanics. I am a Musician, trust me with these songs, and your Talent, you can miss. Thank You, Tony

I got to see Mike and the Mechanics so many times when they toured the US. Genesis would always start their tours in Dallas, Texas. But for whatever reason, Mike and the Mechanics started their very first tour at a little, venue in South Florida in the city of Sunrise, Florida. The place was called the Sunrise Musical theater. It was practically on the edge of nowhere and the everglades (so to speak)in it's early days. But nevertheless it had enough pull to attract the old greats like Sinatra, Tom Jones, Johnny Carson, Jerry Lewis, Henry Mancini, the original cast of The Man of La Mancha. Just greats from all over the place, big names. Big names in rock as well. So, whoever was involved with the creation and/or operation of this Sunrise Musical Theater had some pull to get these type to come out. But it was a modern, contemporary venue, just beautiful and perfectly built for music acoustically. I mean it was intentionally built to be acoustically correct from the start.
So, Mike and the Mechanics picks our local theater to launch their first tour and you know I had to make it. This place is like three miles from my home. So, as a fan I was just blown away.
We saw that concert and the crowd made so much noise for them that night at the end of their performance, you could just see them looking at each other knowing that they had something. I'll never for get that night.
And they started their US tours at that Sunrise Musical Theater from there on out.
That theater eventually died out with the passing of the greats, real concerts, and the battles over the ticket outlets of the day. It has since been purchased and converted to a church.

This song breaks me down each time I listen to it. So many reasons. Honor thy mother and father. Thats all I can advise.

The wisdom of this song carries on to more of our lives than just how we communicate intergenerationally. Imagine if we brought the same understanding to ALL of our relationships. Imagine how better off we would be.

Thank you. We were the generation of kids who were the first to have our music on video. It's a gift to have the kids of today rediscover our music and play it back to us and remind us what we believed in and what we thought was important. I forgot all about this song and this artist

Heard this song so many times but, thanks to you Shon, you made me realise the real deep meaning of the lyrics.
    Thank you Shon. 💜
I lost my father 10 years ago and I still feel empty because we never sat down and had a meaningful discussion.

Powerful reaction to one of the most powerful songs of all time. You got my sub on this one. You are a really funny, lighthearted guy and I love seeing you playing most of the time. But it's equally impressive to see that you can also be powerful and show some more serious emotions when appropriate. Go Shon

Some songs are about the music and some are about the message. This one is the message.
For my funeral I want Alan Parsons Project's Old and Wise. "Someday, in the midst of time, when they ask you if you knew me remember that you were a friend of mine. And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes. When I'm old and wise."

This has to be the best lyrics of any song anywhere, anytime. Mike is from Genesis and they have other wonderful hits, but few bands can come up with something as great as this!

Great reaction! This song came out when I was too young to appreciate. Now that I’m older I relate it so much to the ( lack thereof) relationship that my father has with my brother. They’re so bitter at each other to the point where my father has made it very clear he does want my brother anywhere near his funeral when he dies. These are 2 men that have such an impact on my life and the situation hurts my heart everyday.

I remember when this song came out. I was a kid, early teens maybe, and I only noticed the sound and not the lyrics. Nowthat it’s come up in music reactions (yours is not the first) I get to re-experience it as an adult and it takes on a whole new meaning.
