  • I've had a number of people ask me to make a video on what you should take when you first go to space. I would say almost nothing, but there's a bit more to it than that. Let's take a look into starting up a space station...
    Note that this video was made with Space Exploration 0.6, so when 0.7 comes out, things may change a little bit!
    00:00 Introduction
    00:48 Setting up on Nauvis

    Very nice as always. Its actually quite convenient that most of the stuff you bring with you for space scaffolding and belt construction is also used in your very first space science pack type.

      Thank you! And yes, I suspect it might be deliberate that there's some overlap to make the first space science a little less painful!

    Great tip re using the derelict spaceship to navigate to a new planet then using a rocket pod to land safely on the new planet, place a landing pad, then bring in a rocket from Nauvis with everything else that you need. It has always bugged me that crash landing on a new planet seemed to be the only way to do it. Your method is far more elegant!
    However, my question is - how do you then get back on board the spaceship that is in orbit around the new planet? Do you construct a rocket silo and rocket (that came in the cargo hold of the rocket from Nauvis) and take it up to orbit to rendezvous with the spaceship or do you catch the rocket back to Nauvis orbit and somehow get the spacecraft to meet you there by remote control?

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  Год назад +1

      That's a good point - I didn't cover that. I would use the rocket pod to get back up into orbit where the ship is waiting for you and fly back in that. You will need to make sure you have some cargo rocket sections (which you get from flying a rocket out there) and some fuel (which you'll want to load in the rocket!) and you can't take much stuff with you. These are needed to launch the pod back into orbit.
      Alternatively, if you're shipping the resource from that planet back by rocket, you can hitch a lift in a cargo rocket, flying the spaceship by remote control is easy!

      Yep, capsule navigation is worth using at least a few times. I like to go to each planet and grab the treasure in the pyramid ASAP before doing more space research. Especially if the treasure is red, it's a huge bonus to early space science.

    Great video. Thanks a bunch for making it! Just like any other programming video, watch someone grind something out in minutes and then takes me hours for me to actually implement. But that's the fun! Good to have a sense of direction on where to start with space!

      Thank you! You might find the space bus video a useful follow up to this one as it talks about possible next steps - or at least how I did it!
      If you feel your progress is slow, remember that this is very much sped up, and the designs and ideas took me a lot longer to come up with than it takes me to talk about them here! We're about 250 hours into K2SE, with 4 players, so don't expect to be done quickly!

      @@LaurencePlays well since you offered. I have one cargo rocket working manually so far. I know how to use cannons but don’t have a plan for multiple rockets to different places. Interested in the general approach to designing logistics using rockets. Not so much a how to but overall planning kind of thing. Thank you for your content!

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  10 месяцев назад

      @@derpymoose9948 We're not actually using rockets (much) in our current game, however my last runthrough (in 0.5), I did.
      The simplest way to do it is to have a single resource on each rocket and then name your landing pads appropriately - for example, you might have landing pads called "Vulcanite", and then the rocket silo set to launch rockets to any pad with that name. Rockets will only be launched to empty landing pads, so when one of your outposts runs out of vulcanite, another rocket load will be automatically sent over to it.
      That part is easy, the logistics of making sure the rocket parts and the fuel are always available can be a bit harder though!
      Does that cover the question, or are you thinking more about the rocket parts as well?

    Saved to the archives lol. Good video to show my friend when we finally start our space exploration together. I actually like having the things on belts be in buffer chests and NOT letting the requester chest pull from buffer chests so that i can look at it to see what all nauvis is low on at a given time.
    Glass. Its always glass. So much glass XD
    I always just fly to my new worlds in an empty rocket to place that first landing pad lol. Lets me land on biter planets and just fly to where ive scouted i want to set the base. Which is usually the exact opposite side from where ive landed XD.

    • @SikGamer70
      @SikGamer70 Год назад

      Are you making rough data substrate up in space? That's where all the glass usually goes. You can make it on the planet instead to reduce shipping costs and also benefit from productivity modules.

    • @ThwartAbyss54

      @@SikGamer70 i do make it prod3'd on the planet and ship it up in the rocket with everything else XD. Low Density also seems to succ my glass supply up but thats also prod3'd planetside. Its modules in space that use most of the glass lol cause i cant prod those. For utility and production. and then solar panels and unobserved frames and a bunch of other stuff that i cant remember at the moment. I need to get back on and play more lol. Also need to get off my lazy butt and go make my dedicated stoneworks/ironworks/copperworks/etc planets and start the true space base XD

    • @LaurencePlays

      That's a good idea with the resources in buffer chests! A good way to filter out the stuff that should come from the bus.
      Interesting you say glass is a problem - in our last stream our factory broke because we had too much glass and all the storage was full...

      Glass is basically free though. There is so much stone/sand byproduct and even more if you use core mining.

  • @Murder-less
    @Murder-less Год назад +1

    Some guys tend to recommend full load of stone for the first rocket because its cheap (you may afford to lose some with rough landing) but you will need it eventually for the basic space science

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  Год назад +1

      I can see the sense in that, but with my suggestion, you don't end up crash landing in Norbit at all, so there's no throwaway rocket up there. I suppose you could take a full rocket of stone to the asteroid belt and then back in the spaceship though...

    • @Murder-less
      @Murder-less Год назад +1

      @@LaurencePlays crash on asteroid belt with stone, move stone to norbit, setup landing pad there, you have landing pad in norbit + some stone for science, ... Profit!

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  Год назад

      @@Murder-less Yeah, all it costs is a bit of stone that gets destroyed on landing, and some extra rocket fuel (it takes more fuel to launch a full rocket than an empty one), so it's not too much more expensive. There'll be the hassle of moving the stone from wherever you crash to the spaceship, but that's certainly manageable. You could even launch the ship and then reanchor where the rocket crashed!

    • @zimfreak4242
      @zimfreak4242 Год назад +1

      Loading up the first rocket makes sense, but it is offset by the fact that empty rockets use 50 sections instead of 100 and 50% of the liquid rocket fuel. Partially empty ones scale linearly toward this. So if you're short of fuel or want the first rocket to Norbit coming in that much quicker, it might be worthwhile to leave the asteroid belt rocket empty (you can load up your personal inventory for free anyway)

  • @mehuna66

    I only took jet fuel and life support cannisters. Went to the astroid belt. Took the ship back to the orbit and put the rocket pad there.

    • @LaurencePlays

      Yeah, that sounds perfect! So much to loot, and then you don't have to crash a rocket in Norbit.

      @@LaurencePlays and other planets too. Can simply take necessary items to establish a requester landing pad and power + some rocket fuel cargo rocket sections and a space capsule. Fly to the orbit and drop down from there. And come back the same way by space capsule.

    How come your bus only has one lane of iron plates? From experience that's not nearly enough usually and you always run out. Or am I missing something?

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  Год назад +2

      It's mostly as a demonstration - you can increase the number of belts if you need to... However! Usually one belt is sufficient, if you start to move things off the bus when they use large amounts of resource. Green circuts and red circuits have their own area and are brought in by train, motors and engines can be as well. It very much depends on your build style though.

    So you can screw yourself if yoj don't use those first space science packs to research ice melting so you can make yojr own? And what happens if you get stuck in space? Or die? Or somehow screw something up? I haven't gone to space yet because I'm afrsid to brick my entire run.

    • @LaurencePlays
      @LaurencePlays  Год назад +1

      Don't worry - you can't brick your run (at least, I don't know of a way, other than getting overrun by biters and running out of iron!)
      You can bring up more water from Nauvis in barrels (there are some water barrels in the spaceship too, I think), so you can make more cosmic water and so space science packs, even without ice melting. I just think it's easier not to have to, so if you can do the research with the ones you're given, there's a bit less faffing with barrels required!
      You can fly back from orbit to Nauvis with the rocket capsule (even without any fuel), and if you die (or commit suicide), you can spawn at the closest landing pad or back on Nauvis, so you're never completely stuck. Don't worry - you'll be fine 🙂
