Billy has an extremely powerful voice in metal. and live it's huge they killed it back in 99 at a small club badass show
If you really think about it, in this day and age (2022), Testament is pretty much a supergroup at this point. Chuck's voice doesn't seem to age, Eric & Alex are a beyond accomplished power writing/playing duo and then there's these two dudes on bass and drums you might have heard of Steve DiGiorgio and Gene Hoglan.
What a ridiculously talented lineup. Don't get me wrong, there are many, many other extraordinary bands out there with their own fantastic lineups but these guys have been together on and off for a long time. And some of Testament's alumni aren't too shabby either like that Dave Lombardo guy. He's, you know... okay, I guess. And there are others too.
It's nutty the firepower Testament packs.
Can a band get any better? Testament sound so tight live it's amazing. They are, truly, one of the giants of thrash. Maybe not the most well known or the most records sold, but that hardly matters. They are in a league of their own.
They are just as great as they ever where.....One of the very best metal bands of all time. Love "Dark Roots of Earth". Can't wait to hear some more!
Spoiler alert - their last album (Brotherhood of the Snake) kinda sucks.

I met Chuck in 1995. After the show was over, I was sobering up at the club when this big dude, with tats walked up next to me at the t-shirt stand. "Hey Chuck, sign my ticket stub." "No problem," he said. You guys kicked ass then and still do today. Thanks.

The term Big 4 came about due to album sales. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax were the top sellers of the thrash genre at the time, and (if I remember correctly) a Rolling Stone journo coined the term "Big 4 of thrash".
As much as I agree Testament are a much better / more consistent band, they didn't really kickstart until 1986 and by then the other main 4 bands had bolted.
IMO, from the Gathering onward, Testament really started to amp up their playing. I can understand why the other 4 get more credit, because they were better overall. However, from 1999 to the present, Testament has been more consistent and less commercial than at least Metallica, Megadeth or Anthrax. They’re more consistent than Slayer, but Slayer is the least commercial of the other 4. lol
Testament is more death metal than thrash, anyway. Especially with the Atomic Clock behind the kit. Hoglan is a beast!
I like both but Anthrax gets the respect because they were earlier and one of the originators of the genre. Exodus is who really belongs alongside the other 4.

This band has aged well soundwise. It's nice when a classic band has a singer who can still hold his own like this or DRI. Some singers just don't have the heaviness anymore..

No disrespect to Paul at all, but man am i glad that the clock is behind the kit again. I love Pauls playing in Slayer, even more than Daves - especially the God hates us all-era. But Testament - at least from what i witnessed - is all precision over fury. Eric and Alex manage to play so many details (so good!) that they need someone behind the kit who will keep everything tight and in place. Pauls performance here is full of energy and soul, no doubt about that! But it`s also ... well ... organic to say the least. :D

I hope Chuck trims down! he's a great vocalist, and still a great, but his health and stuff as he gets older. It just would better for him to trim down some. I did one meal a day, for like a month, as long as u don't have diabetes and stuff, melts the weight right off. Awesome and perfect composition on this song 100%!
