Fuzz Pedal - The Unpleasant Surprise

- fairfieldcircui... a somewhat crazy fuzz pedal I discovered at NAMM 2014. I enjoy creating bizarre sounds, and that you can definitely do with this one. I tried to argue with the pedal description - I play jazz lines with this pedal! Haha! It works. Sort of.
Description:
Reminisce about the time you got your shoulder caught in the reciprocating saw while this unit destroys your slick jazz lines.
As The Unpleasant Surprise turns your playing style upside down, you'll be thankful for its ability to push you outside the box, outside your comfort zone, all the while retaining the essence of what is played. The artifacts created by this pedal are strange, harsh and unusual but never seem misplaced or out of context.
For all you haters, I want you to know that this pedal is designed to sound unpleasant. That's the point! Maybe I made a mistake in demoing it in the way I did. It's meant for creating nasty tones for experimental soundscapes. Some people actually look for crazy sounds, for composing or as an effect while playing live. Nels Cline is an example of such a musician. So, there you go.😋
I love this pedal.
The purpose of this pedal is to create, nasty, ugly, crazy, annoying tones. That can actually have its use as an effect, in certain situations. It is not a pedal you leave on all the time and use like an overdrive or distortion pedal. It's a very specific effect, and some musicians use pedals like this one to create sonic mayhem. It's not for everyone. Just wanted to clarify that.
Somewhere out there, someone is watching this video and screaming "That's it! That's the sound I've been looking for!" and that is the beauty of music. I mean, it's not me, but we all like what we like haha
And here I am!
ME
Nah FK THIS SOUND HAHAHAH
Honestly, you need to hear it in person. It's awesome.
I can't believe all the people that don't like this. Sure, it's not for every song, but this thing could be super useful and creative. But then again, I'm into raunchy and gritty fuzz and getting super creative. Great demo my friend!
Thanks, I should perhaps have used it in a more creative way in the demo. Glad you liked the demo!
A fabulous demo. Great to gear a great guitarist put such a pedal through its paces.
Fairfield's pedals are all unique. I love this fuzz:)
I want to get another one of these. I always sell these because at the time, I didn't have the right muff and I think with my setup now, it will work. I always enjoy pedals pedals like these because I want to be in the now and sound like myself and not like everyone else close and narrow minded. This is a great demo and playing. I think this pedal is awesome for his playing for the old and new. It's just a matter of taste I guess.
Reminds me a lot of all the weird stuff they do on Magic Carpet Ride at the beginning.
Nice demo! i picked one of these up yesterday. Was looking into the Zvex Fuzzolo, but i found that the ONSET knob on this, and the Pulse Width not he Zvex do similar things (gate/spitty sounds) and i went with this. It was a bit more, but you're right, that Crush switch is amazing.
Got this because i wanted my fuzz to sound like a FUZZ
Cool man, glad you're digging it.
I think it is cool. Jeff Beck would have a field day with this. Nice job. Enjoy all your videos
I dont know why, but this guy looks like he smells great. Hahaha
lol!
Those crackles would sound lush in an ambient setup.
Get rid of the noise gate circuitry (if that is really the cause of the fading out) and you have a good sounding 60s Fuzz. But that fading/gating is just too much trouble for me
SO cool! I found this demo while I was looking for freaky/filthy fuzzes and this might just be the one for me! Might check them out next time I head up to Quebec!
TimothyPage06 I really like how some of the chords you played just.. completely fuzzed out and took on their own weird rhythmic qualities. That was really cool.
TimothyPage06 See this one too - ruclips.net/video/i3gx9eVyosE/видео.html - another demo I made with this pedal.
I'm always looking out for something that recreates early John McLaughlin fuzz tones eg Tony Williams Lifetime "Turn It Over" and hyper-overdriven Hendrix first album "Foxy Lady" etc. I like the farty tone of this pedal but envelope and decay are super important to me and this pedal seems to want to cut off the evolution, the story, of a note, which you would naturally want to twist and turn using bends and vibrato or let it hang in space to do its own thing...burst into feedback etc :)
I forgot to mention with the ehx you can get some usable things out of it.
This is just like a muff with a dying battery noise to it
Love this pedal, it fits perfectly in my doom metal band
I love pedals like this, fuzz distortion is my favorite kind ;)
I can dig it and you showed a bit more versatility than the company demo. But for me if I were going to go weird I'd buy a Spaceman WOW pedal.
wow...i really enjoyed this demo..the fact that you played jazzy blues based stuff throught this pedal was great.
i would use this pedal all day, but as i play noisey industrial stuff that would be no surprise..but what you played with it was really inspiring.
thanks...😆
wish I'd seen it 3 years ago
See these pedals. It is worth to pay attention.
Germanium Gainiac MP Custom FX the best overdrive fuzz
and this one. Two different approaches and two more than excellent sounds
Micro Gainiac The Best Fuzz Pedal
Sounds like a blown speaker. Could be useful for single notes.
Great tool! Nice demo.
The screwed-up effect is a little reminiscent of some of John Scofield’s tones.
Just get a EHX Germanium OD. Its like $60 and makes these same sounds if you put the bias and volt knob out of wack.
This info the hor’s douvre would make some crazy sound scales
Love your videos and your playing :-) But did the Wife throw anything at you while you were filming this video? LOL ;-)
i wonder what happens when you put a mic thru it
Sounds like you could create some interesting loops for electronic dance music or dubstep with this but I'm not sure where else it could be utilized.
Could be used for Black keys type riffs?? Interesting pedal
MrProwler101477 Yah, it can be used for whacky fuzz tones for sure.
That's neat, I like it.
I like this!
After listening to this pedal I am so glad that I spent a ridiculous amount of money on a Roger Mayer Fuzz Face. However, this pedal could be good for making rude noises.
Shoegaze forever still wasted your money
note to self: if I make a fuzz and something goes wrong - do not bin it.sell it.
I love this sounds!
even he said at one point it sounds broken. This would be great for driving a sound guy completely insane. Thanks for the demo, not for me.
his face says everything
dats crazy, me gusta!
Sounds more like its developer was high.
Use it in a song and I might be impressed
I could make the same effect by using a dead battery. no hate towards the artist. he's good. just sounds like your playing with loose wiring.
Sounds to unbiased...good for soundtracks or backing track, not a versatile pedsl...
Just get a Crazy Horse by Durham Electronics. Does the sputtery thing better. More useable.
This is a great pedal to destroy your tone IMHO.
that's my shit right there !
Nicolas .Strange Cool pedal - can sound bizarre if you want it to!
shoulda named it " the blown speaker"
Think I'll just stick to farting into a microphone.
It is literally the worst effect I have ever heard. Sounds like a broken pedal and a guitar cable with a loose connection. I usually find effects interesting but this one..no thank you:)
as long as you keeps on playing it seems okey, fade out is ugly
Eah. thats a tough sell, kind of like the sounds you get from a $20 Casio keyboard and about as useful.
Robert, your style is great. Your playing, teaching, and reviews are awesome. However, this pedal is just the horrible on the ears.
Too many, also expensive, no-sustain sound gated fuzzes on market. This is one of those.....
I don't care for the signal decay and overall it sounds too "dirty" and "farty" to my ears. Sorry. Love your playing tho...
I believe that is the whole idea with the pedal - to create farty and squishy tone with no dynamics. Can be a cool effect if used properly.
well as far as im concerned , that fuzz pedals is the crapiest i've ever heard.. not tryin to be mean of course..
Sorry, not even musical. Perhaps it's got some bad parts..
Shocking waste of money.
Holy hell. I'm not a huge fan of fuzz pedals, but I still try to remain subjective and I know they do have their place in some situations. This pedal, however, is just broken. it has no redeeming qualities or usefulness. It honestly sounds like they are using logic gates to create the square wave. It defies any rationality to imagine someone thought that this pedal sounded good enough to put into production. Bury that thing in an unmarked grave and never speak of it again.
Nah there is a market for crazy sounds and this one can be useful for certain styles. Not for everyone though. It’s a matter of perspective.
Shame. Great pedal, but this guy doesn't know how to play to, or with it.
Terrible sounding pedal, not worth a carrot.
Pedal sounds like crap. Really unpleasant.
Barron Bohl see the name of the pedal...
This is the worst sounding pedal ever. I understand your point of how one could try to challenge himself to get a good sound out of it, and if I were doing life in prison with nothing else to do, I might try that. Personally, it's enough of a challenge for me to get good sounds out of nice sounding equipment! FWIW, the Mojohand Iron Bell is the last/only fuzz I will ever need.
